Sweetie's Saga- Rest In Peace Sweet Mare

I see the point, but I also do not want to overwhelm her stomach and gut with too much at once. She does need the soaked feed 2x a day but the dry alfalfa hay she is cleaning up and the rough forage going thru her is important too.

Once again a horse who feels desperate sends out to the Universe a desperate cry for HELP!!!

And once again a true horsewoman ā€œhearsā€ the cry and buys the horse.

Iā€™ve brought back horses in almost as bad condition. Be mentally prepared that she may end up being ā€œspicierā€ than you thought as she revels in the fact that she is being fed and cared for.

Iā€™m happy to see she arrived safely. It sounds like you have a good plan in place, and she will look like a different horse in a few weeks. You are doing such a kind thing.

Poor girl. Sheā€™s in the best place for her now. Iā€™m sure sheā€™ll be a different horse in a couple of months.

I expect your vet will already do it, but if he doesnā€™t, be sure to ask for comprehensible blood work, so you have a base line and catch any other, like liver or kidney or such odd numbers that may show up, given her current shape of malnutrition.

Above all, donā€™t drive yourself nuts from now until vet comes by catastrophizing:

ā€”" Catastrophizing is a way of thinking called a 'cognitive distortion . ā€™ A person who catastrophizes usually sees an unfavorable outcome to an event and then decides that if this outcome does happen, the results will be a disaster."ā€”

Thinking the sky is falling is understandable given her condition, but wait to see what a vet exam shows you is there.

Refeeding requires knowledge, being observant and compassion and you have plenty of that going to help her. :slightly_smiling_face:

She has some ā€˜Kickā€™ in her at least concerning one back leg I donā€™t blame her though her frog is split open at the sulcus.

That means a lot thank you!! Gahh you guys are making me cry more than this mare!! Mouth, fecal, blood and new coggins are all on my list for tomorrow and vet is bringing me a couple tubes of banamine in case she needs it.

I am a chronic over thinker to the point one of my friends actually got me a shirt that says ā€˜hold on let me overthink thisā€™ lol.

I already am mentally prepared for the fact that thisay have been alot of money for her to be too far past gone and just found a nice place to land and go humanely. At least I could give her that last loving day then.

She is doing great so far with refeeding except for the fact that her poop is pure liquid. I really donā€™t know what else to do about it though besides continue with the program and give her as much water as she wants and just keep her stall and her clean. She is drinking, peeing and pooping so I am taking those as a win for now.

This afternoon she is getting debot egged and bathed from the legs down and her tail n rectum area, probably smear desitin or vaseline all over under her tail, going to the dollar store in a little bit and making her up some ā€˜Peteā€™s Gooā€™ for her one back hoof that has the sulcus split open and I will pack that with gauze after I scrub it out w/dawn and betadine soap.

I just took her for what was supposed to be a 10 min slightly less than a working hand walk just to give her some movement since she has always been out. 7 Min thru she slowed down n told me I just want to go rest n eat some more mamma. So back to the stall for her next ration she went. She has not laid down or rolled at all, I wish she would in a way just to know she is getting a little better nap than just standing snoozing though.

I am just so glad she came on my daughters fall break, she is with gā€™ma this week so I can dedicate less sleep hours and more time to maresie and hopefully when my kiddo comes home things will be looking brighter.

This is her today, expression has gone from terrified to a mix of content but still weary, and slightly curious. She also has quite the vocals when she sees me now since she knows her food is coming!

Iā€™m not sure you should believe what they say the vet did or didnā€™t tell them.

I bet she is exhausted.

Iā€™m glad you did not take away feed. I think she will tank without it. The feed was probably the only real calories she was getting since pasture was so poor, hay was not available, and she is a very inefficient eater without teeth.

I would really consider alfalfa cubes with this mare. She needs rough forage (cubes are still rough forage, pellets are not) and cubes soak very well for horses without teeth. The risk for contamination for cubes and pellets are the same when manufacturing - one is not necessarily safer (someone mentioned contaminated alfalfa cubes unthread). Pellets break down a great deal and are not considered rough forage. I think she has a heavy parasite burden and the rough forage will be beneficial for moving things through her gut, especially when dewormed. I suspect the diarrhea is due to parasites as well.

Iā€™d keep giving her electrolytes especially with the loose stool. She very likely needs them and they will help prevent colic due to dehydration. Fortunately, Triple Crown has probiotics.

She is very likely going to be a horse that canā€™t really rely on hay for the bulk of her calories.

Donā€™t worry about the bot eggs. All of my fat and happy horses get them. I just make sure to deworm appropriately in case they have been ingested and remove as much as I can.

Donā€™t fret over the ears either. That can be taken care of as well.

She is thin but she could be worse. My hope is now that she can get calories from feed she can actually digest, and once dewormed, she will pick up weight.

Oh, and at least her hooves arenā€™t totally over grown. Thatā€™s also a win.

ETA: also meant to sayā€¦ it is entirely possible her previous vet wasnā€™t super terrible and that the clients just absolutely wouldnā€™t comply with vet recommendations. Iā€™ve seen more terrible clients and owners than I have really terrible vets. :pensive:

If I need to I will get cubes, but between buying her and feed I am already around 1k in on her. That is before the vet comes tomorrow.

She is eating the pellets n senior feed. I went n bought 10 bales of alfalfa hay, that was before I found out she had no teeth. She is surprisingly cleaning it up in the 4 hrs between feedings. So if she can stay steady with that I am going to roll with it per my wallet for a bit lol.

Thatā€™s good. I hope she can eat hay. That would be great. And you can also exchange the pellets for cubes if you want, especially at TSC.

Bags already open lol.

Oh, lol. Whoops! If she can consume hay as rough forage then I think she will be fine with the pellets. I was thinking if she couldnā€™t really eat hay, cubes would be a bit more beneficial.

I donā€™t know I called the vet after they just sent that one page print out and when I was asking questions about her teeth and all that they had no notes that she was missing teeth or which one had been extracted. They basically had no details on her at all.
