That’s super she can eat the hay! Keep up the good work!
With the bot eggs you should scrape into a paper bag and burn. Otherwise the wind will take them and your pony will eat them as well as her.
You have the right idea to take her for a little walk before feeding. Mentally she is working for her feed and not just being given it. Continue to listen to her that she can’t walk much yet.
I just wormed him with zimectrin gold yesterday. He is on an every 8 weeks or so rotation of different ones. Basically when the farrier comes I know he needs to get his wormer lol.
We are about to do her mini half bath, maybe she will feel even better after that!
Why are you giving dewormer every 8 weeks?
Statelinetack had a 6wormer deal thing with a chart on it showing which to give in jan/feb, march/april, etc. I have it saved at work and I have just always done it that way.
Found it!
Depending on where you are, that may not work well. We do all our working based on fecals, and my mare gets wormed 2-3x per year, max.
I usually pull one fecal a yr on him when he gets his coggins done. Last one was in June, vet said he is good so what you are doing is working. I also try to clean his lot and pasture daily, lately it has been every few days but still.
Listen, I am far from an expert… but this seems like a lot of wormer. I have a degree in medical microbiology, and I think a lot about drug resistance. I am glad it’s working, but perhaps there is a worming schedule that is less likely to lead to resistance that might be friendlier to your wallet, too.
Hmm good point! I will talk to vet about it tomorrow! Thanks!

That poor girl. I’m sure you know this, but she can live for years without teeth with the right feed. All three of my horses ended up toothless when they got old, but did fine on senior feed and alfalfa. I did soaked pellets for one of them for a while, but he eventually decided he wouldn’t eat it any more, and I went back to unsoaked senior feed and compressed bales of alfalfa.

Looks and sounds like you’ve got a plan. Hope the vet helps you refine it tomorrow and eases your mind about her
Like you’ve said, even she has to be put down, you will have made her final days good ones
I’ve seen worse and hope just good care and feed does the trick
Thanks for getting her
It was explained to me 10 or 12 years ago that there were no new equine deworming products in the research or production pipelines. There was ample evidence of parasites becoming resistant to the products available so fecal egg counts and targeted deworming for each horse was the new normal.
The OP has a full plate right now but that Stateline Tack deworming schedule is not a best practice any longer.
She looks kind and grateful here.
She already looks better and happier! I meant to add to my previous post - how about “Maple” for a name, as in maple syrup? It sounds like your daughter is on the job though.
That would actually be really ironic because none of us in the house use maple syrup for anything lol.
Just gave her another 1lb of alfalfa hay, it is like feeding a baby this getting up every few hrs I am exhausted! Plus side, we have about 1.5 formed poopsies!! Maybe the mini bath and only doing regular hay between her am n pm mashes is making the difference?!
I’m not sure why she had runny poo nor why it’s more formed now, could be many things. But! I know that’s a good sign! A very good sign. Glad to hear it!
My completely uneducated mom theory guess:
Before she came to my place, her feed was dry and they do not give them any hay, just a sparse heavily weeded field to “graze” in. Which now that I think about it makes no sense…in her pics from her listing there was a wall of square bales in front of her stall!!
Then she comes to me and I give her the same feed, heavily soaked n softened, plus the 1lb alfalfa hay every 4hrs between feedings, the protein in my morning shake makes me “go” and I have heard alf hay can do that too with horses because of the higher protein. Hence the runs for her.
I backed off soaking her feed so heavily. I had it basically as mash/slop the first few times because I wanted to make sure she was staying hydrated. I also am giving her electrolytes only a quarter or so scoop, and probios, so lessening the water when soaked and the probios kicking in, firmer poops? I’m a mom, yes, I will probably always say poop lol.
They are still not normal apple balls, but it is not pure liquid squirting out anymore thank goodness.
Just a thought on why she isn’t laying down. She’s so bony laying down might be painful. Maybe try adding more shaving. Like a lot more. So much she can practically swim in them.
Thank you for helping the mare and educating the owners. Hopefully they will change how they do things at home and maybe even reach out to ask questions regarding care.
