Sweetie's Saga- Rest In Peace Sweet Mare

How strange! Hope it’s just incidental with the roof noise from rain. FWIW my oldie will only eat wet food for so long.

I hate to say it, but is she choking? Have you ever handled a choke before?

Can you get video of her face?

If it was me I would pull all food right now

Thats kinda what im thinking too, but again she has been pooping all day, just did in front of me, and just peed, like look mom i can do all the things. I know as soon as I pull her hay shes going to start stall walking too. Ugh rock meet hard place.

My first thought with turning down the wet hay was maybe because she has had access to sweet grass.

Do you feel any lumps down her esophagus that could suggest choke? Any strange noises or nasal discharge?

Can you check to see if something is lodged in her mouth? Grab the tongue, pull to side and reach in?

I’ve never seen any difference in my horse’s poop or pee when he’s choked.

Pull food and open door to lot.

Don’t play with possible choke

No and no, and her lot does really not have that much decent grass in it lol. She still has been eating her Alfalfa pretty good well basically eating all of it until today, as soon as I gave her some dry hay and took the bucket of wet hay drained the water, and then put it back in her stall she started eating it. Pooped and peed right in front of me too. The only odd thing now is the breathing. But again she does have that one tooth that needs to come out, could that being ouchy cause the breathing? I know when my tooth hurt I was miserable.

Its pouring rain, and like 60 out, I could throw a sheet on her. Ive dealt with choke before and it does not seem like it, but good call I can do that for at least a couple hrs n see how it goes.

Better safe than sorry. At least pull hay for a little while and observe more. Choke is nothing to mess around with.

I could see a bad tooth making her go off her feed but heavy breathing seems a stretch unless it’s swollen real bad and I would think that would result in an elevated temperature

I wouldn’t say it’s a typical response to dental pain but heavy breathing can be a stress response and pain is certainly a cause of stress.

My other thought is maybe an allergic type reaction with her being on new grass.

You could monitor her breathing and see if it continues. Look for nasal discharge and typical choke signs. If she’s out maybe slap a blanket liner under the sheet since she’s so thin and it’s going to get colder and raining.

Just did as far as I can, cleared out any little grubs of hay, moved her tongue around. Bless her heart my pony would have take my fingers off lol. Pulled hay, shes holding her tail up slightly, she is not thrilled with me right now though.

Right. So shes doing the whole switch the back feet resting, fidget here fidget there. Tail slightly cocked up. I’m still hearing gut noises though. Going to put a sheet on her n let her out to pick around n get her gut moving.

I’m glad you gave banamine. If you can walk her even up and down the barn isle to get her moving that may help in case she is trying to colic.

No discharge as of yet, no foaming, nothing to indicate choke. Going to do the sheet n go outside n move that gut around approach for now n hope the banamine does its work.

Plus she got wormed and she had a moderate to heavy worm load, wormed her Wed morning, wondering if a die off is just starting to affect her?

When my horse had a partial impaction colic from poorly chewed hay earlier this year the only signs were her lying down and heavy breathing.

“BARN” Is a modified 36x20 carport. Unfortunately it would be about as bad as her walking her 10x12 stall, the aisle is only around 10ft by the 20ft length. Plus side, shes licking the salt lick, hoping she will drink!

Ok, I understand. I wish it weren’t raining! I think it’s be great if she could move but she may stand like a statue in the rain. It’s worth a try though. My concern is that she may be colicing from being dewormed if she had a heavy parasite burden. Some horses can impact when a large amount of parasites die off and can’t effectively move through the gut. Did she happen to have a ton of roundworms?

She told me to use quest plus. Its the only one that targets the worms she has. Cannot remember right this min which ones but I have the lab results in an email. She just pooped again too. Normal apples. Currently sheeted n hooded n is out happy in the rain.

If I were a betting woman, I would bet it was small strongyles. Moxidectin is usually the best option because it targets all stages of the parasite. They also frequently make horses colicky. I think I’d watch her close for colic. It’s a great sign that she had a bowel movement. If you have electrolytes, they may help with GI mobility. Is she moving a bit in the pasture?
