Sweetie's Saga- Rest In Peace Sweet Mare

I will ask vet tomorrow about the charcoal and bio sponge @trubandloki n @Obsidian_Fire

This evening she had what my grandmother would have called a “whorse…” bath lol. Hoohah, booty, and between n down the legs to get some of the slough off of her.

Looks like it starting to form up again, still had not touched her water bucket though… so the only water she is intaking is from her slop/soup and soaked hay… I swear my mare is telling her things to do from above that she knows freaks me out!!

Go eat the grass on the other side of that multi colored bridge Katie n quit torturing momma it’s not funny anymore!!! Oh and mommy loves you and no horse will ever replace my Katerbug…so be nice!!:rofl::rofl:

I think I’m delusional at this point @PaddockWood!

It sounds like this poor mare is extremely lucky to have you. It also sounds like you will make the best decision possible, whenever and whether it’s her time to go, or it’s her time to stay and fight another day. All I can say is that you are apparently giving this mare more care than she has seen in a long while. And that is a kindness. Try not to overthink everything, and know that you’re doing a fabulous job, and are giving this horse the love she deserves. Hugs.

Oh, I’m a Virgo, I overthink and obcess about everything and have to work on what dh not so fondly calls my ‘psycho control issues’…every day haha.

I am giving her only 1lb of senior tonight and 2lbs of alf pellets all wa and soupy with her wet hay, then starting tomorrow morning she will be on straight alfalfa for the week and see how she does.

Will second that respiration can go up if she isn’t a good sweater and feels warm. How do her ears feel to touch? She might also have “mild equine asthma” (heaves is “severe equine asthma”). Wonder if she’s allergic to the shavings or alfalfa or having other seasonal allergies causing breathing issues? It won’t sound like heaves and may or may not have mucous or coughing.

And I have seen one senior horse give itself a sinus infection by submerging in senior feed soup too much —horse was having sudden rapid weight loss crisis so owner added feedings. She had to back off a little how soupy she made it to help the sinuses clear up and feed in a pan versus a deep bucket. You would see some nasal discharge developing if not a temp.

Thats the thing, no nasal discharge, no temp, no wheezing or whistle. I have been letting her be in or out at her own accord since Saturday so not locked in sawdust, no sneezing or cough, lot does not any good grass.

I was thinking about going and getting her a big shallow pan like my mare had to avoid her dunking her face in the feed this week or weekend, good idea ty!!

Oh and it is freezing temps here, I do not see any way she could be too warm given her age, lack of any insulation, short barely there coat just starting to super thinly fuzz up for winter and tb type thin skin. Ears are slightly cold at the tips, not overly hot thru the lower and middle parts at all.

If it was even 40s or 50s with me sheeting her then yes I could see it, but it is upper 20s at night right now pretty much with the wind.

Baffling, I know. Like the kid just not sick enough for the doctor to make a solid conclusove diagnosis. Just have to wait till the kid is sicker or gets better, blah.

Yeah, maybe try one of those big flat pans so it’s not as deep. Could maybe help even if it’s an allergy issue and not a sinus issue, not to be submerging herself in the food. Mild asthma won’t show up as a wheeze either. Takes a BAL to diagnose. Not as dire of an issue for a non-performance horse as heaves (or heart problems), but if the breathing persists, she might need a management change or allergy testing, but maybe she’ll be outside more by then anyway if she pulls through in general.

Yes and with the cooler weather less allergens to bug her. She has the option to go in or out as she pleases right now too :).

Do Aquariuses do that too? Because, me too.

Idk, my mom was one God rest her soul and she has almost manic moments!

I will only add that my horse is a bleeder (visual, not occult EIPH), with asthma… and aside from some intermittent coughing episodes, she has had no symptoms of asthma/heaves aside from the bleeding and occasional cough under saddle.

No idea either and I am putting off walking out to feed till 9, lets google!!

Ulcer supplement/helpy stuff! Yes I said it like that n I am sticking to it! Lol.

Thank you! It is was rough. Yes, two nosebleeds are what led us to do the diagnostics. She’s been fine for over a year after a change in management (soaked hay, moved to shedrow, increased turnout), and a few rounds of steroid inhalers! Back in full work and doing swell…

My point was, I suppose, that asthma (even severe) doesn’t always present with typical heaves signs and symptoms.

This mare will never be in work, too old, have not even started to stress over her feet or arthritis more than previcox and hoping food and more muscle mass will help out.

I want to do right by her as much as I can without spending what would make more sense on a teenage horse than one at her age though. If I can get weight on her, her poop back to solid and her be comfortable in pasture than all is well :).

I get that totally. From the same theory, I still wonder if it could be a slight case of heaves but without all the other presenting symptoms.
