Sweetie's Saga- Rest In Peace Sweet Mare

Could be! Then again, could be anything… pain, heart, etc. my horse never had an elevated respiratory rate, even at her most severe illness. Tough to tell. My best advice is to not worry too much and get past this transition period.

LOL. I hear ya! When my horse came down with Potomac this summer, I survived on wine. And it wasn’t cold yet… so whiskey sounds about right!

Its soooo cold this week here!!

Not sure where you are, but it’s in the 30s tonight and was so chilly today that they were all fresh and silly. My two were nuts, but better than some others I saw!

I’m in east tn, it is freezing the next few nights then back in the 70s next week. I hate this time of yr!!

Lol. I am in NY/NJ. It just “switched” in the last day or so to fall. My sister arrived from CA last night and I told her she picked the literal worst week to visit! 70s last week, and we’ll be lucky to get to mid 60s this week with consistent lows in the 30s. Tomorrow’s low is 33. Yikes!

I’m from Michigan originally, at least you still get real snow!!

I love snow (I am from CA so it seems “special”), but I don’t love everything that comes with snow and horses! (And especially don’t love snow when I live in NYC!)

This mare is so lucky to have ended up with you.

Do you think she is warm enough? She will need more blanketing than a horse in good weight.

Full hooded, thicker fleece cooler under a newer amigo sheet and hood, waterproof, warmth, and breathability if somehow she does get warm  Both are a 69 and still loose on her so she has airflow if she needs it. I pull sheets, or hoods, or put them back on, switch out coolers as layering under sheets… all the time, I’m out there at least 4x a day checking on them so she gets lots of fashion changes if need be lol. Tonight it’s going to be 26 out. I kinda want to do the cooler, then an older mio sheet, then the sheet and hood but I don’t want her to be too warm either… ugh.

My oldie is thin though nothing like your girl. No coat to speak of. For below freezing temps he goes in a medium weight (200 ish grams of fill) with a 100 gram sheet and hood over the top.

So I am thinking the full hooded cooler and sheet with hood. Of course when it is going to be below freezing is right around when dd goes to school and I go to work. Then by lunch she will probably be too hot if I left both on her.

How is your mare doing? Is her breathing better today? How about heart rate?

I keep thinking about her and hoping to see a difference in her photos, but it’s not even two weeks since you got her, and it will probably be another two before we can see a noticeable improvement. I’m impatient. Is she now getting unlimited access to her alfalfa?

Thank you for the updates, as I am now totally invested in keeping up with your mare’s progress.

She’s doing okay nickering for her food keeping her warm and cozy at night she is doing great with the pure Alfalfa diet! Poop has firmed up quite a bit, at least 6 to 8 piles every evening and she has been going more outside instead of in her stall so that makes me happy .

Heart rate still high, breathing still about the same, maybe a tiny bit better. Not on free choice yet, she is getting 4lbs of alf hay wetted down morning, noon, n around nowish and 2lbs of pellets soaked completely am n pm. After work around 5 she gets a handful of the senior with her probios, previcox and half scoop of electrolytes, I figure the senior handful she can eat dry, get her supplements and the previcox is not disinegrating so all that I do then, she gobbles it up and I know nothing is wasted or spread out into the soaked pellets and turning into nothingness. I usually give her a smaller flake of dry alf to keep her busy till the evening.

Drinking almost two buckets of water a day now, knock on wood it keeps up! Dentist comes Nov 4th to pull the loose tooth.

She’s starting to get the tiniest of a winter coat and getting more shine to her coat. Her eyes are still dull but I’m hoping as she starts gaining and feeling better some life will come back into her. She is very tolerant of everything that we do with her, I have been pulling and reputting back on and taking away the bottom layer from her sheet/hood and her cooler combo for the past 3 days and she just stands there like okay this is what we are doing…

She doesn’t seem like there’s much wanting to interact if that makes sense, she wants the food, we of course can go up to her and move her anywhere, we love on her but she just kind of stands there like are you done yet…?

I’m sure it is probably more of a survival type thing because right now she is still just in I’m not feeling the best and I’m just trying to make it. Then there’s this person around me all the time and even though they are giving me food and loving on me, I really don’t know what to make of it so I’m just going to stand here and be good and wait until they are done and hope nothing hurts it’s kind of how she acts.

Sorry I haven’t posted in a day or two it’s been really busy, really cold, and I have just been really tired. My daughter is having her birthday party this weekend since Halloween is her favorite holiday and her birthday being in late December she never ends up getting to have a party. Everyone is always busy with Christmas stuff or sick so we’ve been trying to get the house ready for that too. Her and one of her friends are running around my house right now, tomorrow another one is coming over n we are all doing the whole hayrides n haunted house thing tomorrow evening…oh and theybhave demanded a night time ride in the tractor scoop when we get home…:exploding_head:.

After I’m done posting on here I’m still going back outside to feed and put her sheet on, it was almost 70 today and it is going to be back up in the mid-70s this week but then of course cold at night.

Haven’t gotten any great pics, but this was yesterday…
