Sweetie's Saga- Rest In Peace Sweet Mare

Hot coffee and clean bathroom are always appreciated

When I had a yearling to get trimmed and he needed some breaks, that’s when my farrier trimmed the other horses. That might work for Sweetie - trim two feet, put her back in the stall and trim the pony, then trim her other two feet. My farrier also charges $50 for trims.

Thats kinda what I was thinking too!! Or if she is really good about the other 3, give her a break n do pony n save the worst one for last, then she is done for the day with it! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I had a little giggle at “tipping himself”. It reminded me of something that happened recently.

My trimmer has been coming here for around 7 years and she took some finding! Came with the best recommendations and has been instrumental in helping me keep a chronically laminitic pony as sound as can be over this time; she’s great with my quirky little mare too.

She’s currently at AUS$65.00 per trim. I like to have Xrays done on the little guy once a year or so, just to see how we’re travelling. This last time, I asked the Vet to pass on the Xrays to the trimmer (thinking it was a courtesy thing) and for that she added a ‘consultation fee’ of $20.00 on that occasion!

Definitely a “put up or shut up” moment, as overall I respect and thank her for her help with the pony - I honestly think she was “moody” that day!

Lolol wow that was a little presumptuous you would think that she would have at least warned you first! But if she takes great care of your pony that is always the most important thing I guess!

I agree that less is more at this point, Be firm. You might consult your vet about Bute beforehand. Sometimes a blanket and a hand walk is helpful to loosen up the hind end. Be quick with the broom so no slick surface. Price is fair, hardly covers cost of gas. Go Team Sweetie!

Barn and out around it is stone dust, no slippage  we will probably do her outside anyways so she will be in her dirt/little grass lot. Was thinking banamine right as he starts on the other 2 and/or pony depending on how she holds up, that way it will have just kicked in as he gets to the hind area. I have the paste, I ‘think’ it is easier on their stomachs?

Bute and Banamine would be about the same as far as tummy, and you’d probably want to give it an hour or two before. But I can’t recall
is she on Previcox already? If so, don’t mix those. You could probably just up the Previcox dose the day before and the day of the trim depending on how much she gets now.

She is, but as I need to get it refilled soon, could I skip her wednesday evening dose and then give her the banamine before the farrier thursday, go back to the previcox friday?

No, Previcox has a long half life and won’t be cleared from her system in 24 hours. You risk stressing the kidneys mixing NSAIDs, which in her case especially would worry me.

See this is why I love you guys!! So she normally gets a quarter of a 225mg pill around 5pm, give her double then, or another quarter either late Wed evening like around now, or Thurs morning?

Your trimmer comes early Thursday AM? I’d do the other quarter Wednesday with the usual dose. But check with your vet since she’s so underweight. you can also try putting her up by a wall on her right side in case she wants to lean on it when the left hind is up.

She more likes to kick out, the vet thinks its her stifle more than anything. I will give her the second quarter wed, it would just be like a loading dose.

Oh more good news!!! Vet said she’s doing so good that we can move onto free choice hay!!! Except with her till that tooth is pulled, dry hay she does not clean up well. So I am basically filling a hay net to the brim, soaking for 10 min by the house with the hose. Then dragging back out to the barn n dumping out for her. Still is about 5 to 6lbs before wetting and it takes her the 6 r so hrs between feedings to finish it. Night time I soak a whole haynet and give her a little dry hay underneath the wet stuff, gives it time to soak thru!!!

She also had shavings on her belly this morning!!

If she has one leg that she is particularly fussy with, I would have farrier do that one first so it is over and done with quickly. Be sure to discuss with farrier beforehand, tho, so he knows what he is getting into.

Can’t wait for more pictures.

I wish I would have taken photos of my skinny mare as she was gaining weight. She really doesn’t even look like the same horse anymore.

You don’t need more work, but if you do this, you’ll be happy later. Take pictures of her, at least one side and from the rear, in the same pose with the same background every week. If you can do it at about the same time of day that would make the lighting consistent.

I have, but I don’t want her to have a fit out of the blue or anything with that leg and then make the other 3 worse or in more pain trying to hold them up if she get’s silly with the bad one, I’d already rather have 3 done and then just worry about fussing thru the last one and hopefully nothing happens.

I agree with getting the 3 easy ones done first. Giving her a rest and lots of treats, then the problem one.

So we did the easy 3 first and then went ahead and did the hard one, she was only a little bit fidgety. But as soon as she was done and while he was doing the pony she was walking in circles between her stall and her lot and pooping.

She is back to the splats, ugh. Hoping now that we are out of the field she will calm down. They were both in their stalls eating when I just peeked out at them.

Could have been the stress of the farrier? :crossed_fingers: that is all it was.
