Sweetie's Saga- Rest In Peace Sweet Mare

From my post a few years ago when we first realized he was missing “it”. Please ignore my text type grammar, I just went thru and tried to fix all my mistakes and I try to watch how horrible my fat thumbs type on here these days.

He was born full term to a welsh proven stallion and my mare who was for simplicity’s sake, a mutt. An amazing 14.2 chestnut jumper, easy going, great temperament mutt. She’s my profile pic. He came out the size of a springer spaniel, had to milk my mare the first 24 hrs, couldn’t stand, couldn’t nurse, had to be bottle fed. The next day took him and mare to the vets, mare drugged out of her mind and him wrapped in towels in the front seat on my lap. Started nursing when he got to the vets, mainly due to mare being drugged n standing still for once. Lived in a stall first 6 months of his life because his legs were so tiny, think put two fingers next to each other, if he slipped or anything they would have snapped. He had to have straw bc shavings gave him eye ulcers, looking back he also was treated for stomach ulcers I believe from lack of enough milk the first day or so of his life. He had to have braces on his legs, he still cannot be rode because his back fetlock rotates inward when he walks, the entire joint is formed oddly it seems. That hoof grows dished and his frogs have no sulcus, they’re one piece. (If he bucked or anything and snapped the joint, that would be the end of him.)

Fast forward, lives life in the field, gets shots, farrier, worming, ground manners, that’s it. Gains n loses weight when I pulled him onto stall board and muzzled him. Brought him home this yr (2019) in October. Field till about 8pm, in till 6am, back out, stall spotless daily. Drylotted now that the weathers turned n the fields are wet.

Noticed him dribbling pee and that he never actually drops it out to pee, the few times I’ve done more than just rinse him out w a hose, I’ve had to go elbow deep to get to what I thought was his penis, and it was the size of maybe my finger.

He had some funky discharge n just grossness the other day. Hence vet visit today. Vet sedates, can’t find penis, goes deeper, pulls out sheath, or technically inner sheath, it had almost a membrane over it, still no penis.

Vet gives him Lasix to make him pee while he is there to see if anything drops out, he pees, all over his sheath and it sprays out, hence the dribbling apparently. Still no penis. Vet goes in again, pulls inner sheath out, can barely get his finger in the opening, finds a walnut sized what must be his urethra, still no penis.

Asks me how long I’ve had him, was he gelded, did I physically see his testicles removed (yes, super small, fed to the barn dogs I think) and if he exhibits any mare like behavior, (no, total a hole gelding pony) and proceeds to lift his tail to make sure he doesn’t have any other tiny “slits” for lack of better terminology, under his anal opening. He doesn’t…

So all said and done, my pony never developed an actual penis, it must have been part of his birth and dwarfism as we fondly called them, growing issues. Nothing skin wise grew or formed around or over his urethra, no skin, nothing to drop out or even protrude an inch!! Nothing to clean smegma off of, nothing to get a bean stuck in at all. Just a walnut sized urethra, and a sheath that he gets pee all over. No issues till now.

I haven’t seen it done IM, but if your vet says it can be, so be it! Good luck with it, Buy a bottle of it, it’s been years since I’ve bought one, but it wasn’t expensive. Not like some things horse-related.

Huh…must admit that’s a new one. Thanks for sharing (again).

Luckily my vet is meeting me this evening to give me a bottle of it!

Definetly was a new one for me too, and my seasoned vet. He has seen where geldings have been essentially turned into females and they urinate out a hole created under their tail in extreme infection type situations or penile cancer situations I think is what he said. But never fully developing the organ was a new experience. He went to my friends barn not long after that day and apparently it was one of the first things he said to her… “Did Liz tell you yet that her pony has no damn c@(k???”

I am hoping it works but I get what you are saying. Everything I have read about equine chf in seniors says the horse either dies or is euthanized within a year of diagnosing, even with medicine.

First injection about 15 min ago, already had one good pee!

That’s about normal for lasix. Hopefully it helps Sweetie breath easier. You might notice an increase of appetite to go with it.

@carman_liz Perhaps I’m being a bit redundant, as it’s been said in so many ways already, but I really want to say this to you…

You have given Sweetie such love, care and dedication, letting her know that her very being is treasured and valuable. If you realize that you know it’s her time, please take comfort from the efforts you’ve made to ease her way to eternal peace.

You have a wonderful heart - so much respect for you.

Gahhh!!! I have said it before but you guys make me happy cry!!! Drove out to meet the vet yesterday evening. She had one dose of lasix on her truck. Didn’t realize she was about out of the bottle.

So she got that as a ‘loading dose’ and as of today she is off the previcox but we are trying a tube of Tridex for a few days, and if it makes a difference re-evaluate from there.

I have no problems saying goodbye and knowing I do not want her to suffer, this winter is supposed to be a bad one. But if the tridex makes a difference, at least I know my vet can come euth any day if I make the call, and my burial guy is less than 10min from the house if it comes to that. You guys having my back means more to me than I could ever express .

So, was there any improvement on Lasix/tridex?

There was a huge difference in swelling in her chest I could see and feel the difference! She is still breathing harder than normal, but not nearly as hard as she was the other night. I don’t think she’s ever just going to breathe normally though honestly at this point. Oh and it was almost 80 yesterday and no sweating!

Carman-Liz. You’re the best. I wish your husband was a little more supportive and your daughter was more interested in the care aspect

She’s looking good considering how she was when you got her. No matter how it turns out in the short run know you’ve given the old girl a great finish to her life, but I hope she can last thru a beautiful spring

Me too!!! Breathing is still elevated and her hind end is still very weak when she walks, but the swelling is still gone, she is nickering for food again, after her tridex this evening i let go of her head and she left her head on my shoulder n let me scratch n love on her for about 3 or so minutes! It was like she was saying, “I know you r trying your best and so am I” idk…it was a moment tho n I loved every second of it :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I think OP has a crisis brewing with her other horse on another thread.

Yep… pony decided she was getting too much attention and he went with the go big infection and colic or go…well u know… currently freaking out crying over him but he will be at vet clinic tonight and the next couple days. Jingle, cross, pray please!!!

Mare gets secons round of bloodwork pulled tomorrow to see if her albumin (sp?) Has improved at all…gotten worse… pretty much this is the compare to a month ago and decide what the best thing for her before winter gets any worse is. If I have to dig 2 holes Im done with horses for awhile… I cannot take the heartache if my pony goes.
