Sweetie's Saga- Rest In Peace Sweet Mare

Awwwww bless your heart! I say let’s get a good dentist in her mouth with a speculum and headlamp and see if there are dental issues. Boy did she get lucky and look forward to a picture later of her all glossy and filled in.

Lucky horse that you found her. From memory only on some Coth threads they spoke about Panacur not working anymore. Maybe start a thread on how to worm a new skinny horse.

It’s not that effective, but for a horse with a high worm load, it’s a pretty safe place to start. It’s not totally ineffective (IMO some others are worse), and should lessen the count down to a more reasonably addressed state. Then after some weeks, follow up with something a bit more effective.

A 30 year old horse here, whose owner didn’t want to pay for Ulcerguard, recovered from ulcers and a large weight loss by switching from Triple Crown Senior to Ultium Gastric Care plus Well Gel, which is a powder you buy from the vet. It comes in a large tub which lasts a couple of months and costs $250 or so. You might ask your vet if it’s appropriate for this horse.

Thanks! Maybe just have to see what the vet says first. I would for sure rather treat for worms than the cost of ulcers, just have to see how it goes!

If my vet does agree about treating for worms, I was thinkn panacur and then a couple weeks later zimectrim gold. Unless he has a better reccomendation after he looks at her.

I was already thinking about the ultium type feeds at least for the first month

Hey! I double checked today and yes! The Abprazole is what my barnmate switched to!

It is exactly the right thing! She had a lovely expressive face. You will both be better for it!

You sound pretty experienced but I will add just in case. Don’t put weight on too quickly. It affects the hooves detrimentally if you do.

Plannin on taking it nice and slow and easy with her for sure

I love your daughter, and I don’t even know her. Great job raising a lovely human being, Mom! :kissing_heart:

Just for future reference: I used a compounded ranitidine/omeprazole, not for ulcer treatment but for prevention after more than one treatment regimen of GastroGard . My vet suggested it after years of a maintenance dose of GastroGard. Much cheaper and worked well.

@carman_liz So did you get her? We’re all dying to know how it went on Saturday!

Based on the “next Saturday” from last week, I think she is coming this coming Saturday. A least that’s how I read it.

Yes, she is supposed to be here this coming up saturday. They offered to bring her this past Thursday, but it was going to be cold, windy n nasty rain all weekend. I did not want her first few days here stressed out and in weather that would make her lose any extra calories. She gets here Sat, vet is coming out Monday afternoon and we will just take it day by day from there.

So… now I am wondering after reading article after article of UC Davis refeeding program…vet is coming Monday and I will ask her of course but this is driving me crazy in the meantime.

If she comes Sat and her teeth just look awful to me, I would rather give her the 1lb of alfalfa every 4-5 hrs, but in pellet or cubed form since I can then soak it for her and ensure she is getting a good amount of moisture in her body. I’m ‘assuming’ 1lb of pellets or cubes would be their dry weight before soaking, right? Or should I try to soak 1lb of flaked regular alfalfa in a large tub so she has the leftover hay water to slurp up as well? Yes, I am totally overthinking this and stressing myself out lol.

I just really want to make sure she is getting the alfalfa and plenty of water into her, and honestly besides buying bales of alfalfa, which I am still planning on getting about 10 bales on Friday, I’d like to have a second option of pellets or cubes. I am just confused on the 1lb/4hrs thing in that case if it should be 1lb DRY weight of the pellets/cubes, and then soak them, because then as well all know it would be about 3-4 SOAKED lbs technically…? Since they always have great experience and ideas, @Bluey @candyappy @SuzieQNutter any advice for me on weights dried vs soaked please?

Yes, it is 1# DRY weight.
