Hah my dad was also a walk-it-off type of guy, but he is a doctor. His dad was a marine. :woman_shrugging:

Anyway, I know you are feeling overwhelmed but you will get through this, and your pony will be ok too. Youā€™ve got plans and backup plans .

Is that a quarantine spot? Nice

She has a nice big, clean stall with beautiful pasture and green lush alfalfa. She hit the lottery!

Quarantine if she will stay in the stall. Iā€™m sure you saw in the pics, but the gates are just bolted together and U clamped into the walls. The little ā€œfeetā€ of them are in drilled out spots of the 4x4s that are rebared into the ground about a ft. Still if a larger horse wanted OUT, they could break it down and get out into the barn. I have a dry/crappy grass lot connected to it. I would just have to keep pony out until the vet comes and not allow him acces to his lot and stall to keep them from touching noses at all.

Even if I stall both of them at night, there would only be that 10ft aisle in between them. Better than nothing though I guess? It is going to be 32ish tonight here, so I really do want to have her stalled with her cozy soft thick fleeced PJ cooler on her.

Fingers crossed n I am counting down the hours till she is here!!!

Awww ty! The stall is only 10x12 but I put down 3 bags of fine flaked shavings for her to snooze on!

Poor pony man has a ton of shavings but they have bits of strewn around older hay in them lol. He has had the same bedding for like 2 months and then I took 3 muck tubs full of the old but clean bedding from the stall senior was in before he passed, and dumped them in ponyā€™s stall this past week lol.

I just cannot see a reason to pitch clean shavings just because thereā€™s bits of hay in it, does that make me weird-er or is there a legit reason not to?

He only goes potty in the stall if he is locked up so every poop n pee has been in the pasture since around July.

Omg I started crying as soon as the Owners leftā€¦ this is what I just sent my vet:

Hi! So mare is here. The first thing I did was look at her mouth. She has no teeth just the front four and that is it on both sides as far back as I could get my finger.

Sheā€™s covered in bot eggs and her hair is just flaking off of her.

Her ears are eaten up with some kind of grossness and lots of little scabs and smell like infection

One hoof her sulcus is split open and she barely wanted to even lift the foot. She is definitely more stiff on that leg as well.

She has been out on barely any pasture, getting bullied by the other horses. It looks like nothing but sparse weeds from the pictures they showed me and with no teeth she can barely eat the greenery that they had.

That leads me to my question and Iā€™m really sorry to bother you on a Saturday when I know you are coming out Monday. They have been feeding her twice a day, 3 lb of Triple Crown senior and 1 lb of alfalfa pellets but dry not soaked. Judging by how she looks sheā€™s definitely a candidate for the refeeding program.

But should I really be taking away the little bit of triple crown calories that she has been getting, and switching her totally over to the pound of alfalfa hay every 4 hours instead?

I gave her 1 lb of alf hay over an hour ago and she has barely finished it yet. I did buy Triple Crown senior, Alfalfa pellets and beet pulp pellets, so I am able to give her what she has been getting and soak it for her into a nice warm sloppy mash. I just wanted your opinion on if that would be a better option for now and supplement with 1 lb of alfalfa every 4 hours in between her two feedings of the day?

I just did not know if it would be a good idea to take away the complete feed of the senior and switch her over completely to the little bits of alfalfa hay with the protein in it? Since she has not been getting any hay so far and I was just worried about her gut being overwhelmed from the change in nutrients, little that she has been getting, and her bowel movements?

Poor thing! She is so lucky to have found you. Will let the more experienced weigh inā€¦ but sending her and you hugs!

When I took in my mini (body scale 1) I did give him small amounts of senior feed (Tribute). Since sheā€™s already on TC (in theory), you might just want to give her small amounts (in case they exaggerated the quantity) and follow the refeeding program. Thatā€™s what I would do.

Yeah, sheā€™s here! Iā€™ve been following and hoping youā€™d get her!

Oh n the trailer ride hereā€¦No hay, like did not even bring any with them, and no waterā€¦NO FFFNNN WATER??? You guy I am going from livid to just so sad for this mareā€¦ more livid. The vet pulled a tooth that was abcessed apparentlyā€¦and supposedly never told the owners she had no teeth left but her front ones!!! How could any vet, especially if their other horses are even slightly like this mareā€¦ live with themselves??? Dear freaking God tell them she has no teeth!!! Tell them to soak the food!!! Tell them if they cannot handle all this to put her down instead of letting her waste away and become this!!! No, I am not putting her down, but damn dudeā€¦ any decent vet would at least be up front with someone for the fn animals sake!!!

You may find she canā€™t eat the hay. Did not see - but can you get cubes/pellets and soak them? Soak the hay and cut it to small bits for easy eatingā€¦

A pox on the owners. Some people are just a waste of oxygen. I bet she is 19 plus 10 years old or even older and that is why she has no molars left. So she may not be able to handle hay at all because she may not be able to chew it well enough to digest it even if she doesnā€™t just quid it all out. So any hay they fed her was useless.

But she may very well be able to eat soaked beet pulp, soaked alfalfa pellets and hopefully alfalfa cubes. You just need to get a plan from your vet on how to proceed.

Those people may have used a cheap sorry vet or maybe the vet told them all these things and they didnā€™t listen to him/her. We just donā€™t know. They do seem pretty clueless that they expected to get any money for this mare. And probably they were elated that they could haul her to you so you wouldnā€™t show up, look at her and say NOPE and leave. I would move forward and get a plan from your vet. Nowdays we have a lot of options for horses that donā€™t have teeth with a good grinding surface or like your mare - no teeth at all.

I think the alfalfa only refeeding protocol is for horses that havenā€™t had any bagged feed or grain for a long time. If you knew sheā€™d been getting a senior feed you could continue it. But actually you donā€™t know because these folks turn out to be liars at least by omission. So Iā€™d go with hay cubes soaked for a few days until you can see her digestion is working.

So first of all on all the days of me not to be able to find my feed scoop because I used it for grass seed this summer because my pony never gets grain anymore, guess whoā€™s driving to Tractor Supply right now you guysā€¦?

The owners seemed completely clueless. I mean they did not even give her hay or water in the trailer. I guess that makes sense when they told me they donā€™t have any hay at their place, what if the trailer had broken down??? N she sucked down half a bucket of water as soon as she got off the trailer and I took her to the bucket I had waiting for her like by the entrance to my fields. Already bought senior feed, Timothy Alfalfa pellets and beet pulp pellets. Tractor Supply did not have pure Alfalfa pellets so Iā€™m working with what they have right now. My vet said to stick to what she has been getting fed but soak the hell out of it and then supplement her with the alfalfa hay every 4 hours in between her a.m. and p.m. feedings

I did flat out ask them is there anything else about this mare, good or bad no judgment. (I was judging insideā€¦) I know you guys are just getting into horses and really did not know what to do with her and thatā€™s fine, but you need to tell me exactly what she was eating, how much she was eating, and tell me the Gods honest truth so I cannot hurt her accidentally. As I started explaining the stomach stuff that it can cause to them the husband goes Oh you mean like colic and seem very proud of himself that he knew that term and slightly had a concept of what it meant ā€¦ sigh. .

I explained to them about refeeding and how much it can mess her up if it is not done properly, exactly how important rough forage and food constantly going through their stomach and intestines is and to the horses body system. I suggested that they physically opened their other horses mouths to see how much teeth they actually had left since their vet did not once mention oh she has no freaking teethā€¦ They looked to be mid twenties and the wife was in tears when I was explaining everything to her so I think they were telling me the truth. They were just completely ignorant to what actually needed to be done no help from their vet at all.

I just think she was expending so much energy trying to eat it and then getting absolutely no forage in her besides that and that is why she still has not gained any weight.

I agree on the age and this might be a case where Iā€™m going to end up spending a lot of money to dig a hole. It probably sounds cruel but if their vet had a shred of decency and kindness they probably should have been told to do that already with this one if they did not have the means to do any type of major care to her or for her.

Iā€™ve already come to terms with that one, but my friends helped me with my mare when she had to get her teeth extracted and lived toothless for a good 3 years before she had her breaking point which was a stifle issue and not being able to get back up so maybe this is just a way to pay it forward with another Chestnut mare with no teeth.

To all who read that before I fixed all the typos sorry my phoneā€™s voice text absolutely despises me.

If I thought the horse needed to be put down immediately or it was too far gone I would have no problem saying no either loaded up or you leave her here and I will get her put down. I donā€™t know that they will use the money that I paid for her to buy hay for their other horses but I hope to God at least part of it does.
