SWF Seeks SWM for Candlelit Dinners and a Gallop on the Moors

Why are there so few men in the sport?

Is english riding somehow too ‘feminine’, has hunter/jumpers become too sissy as a worthy athletic pursuit for little boys, are men really better suited to team sports, are men afraid to compete in a sport/endeavour dominated by women?

In our barn, there are four men among 25-30 riders/boarders. A recent study of equestrian sports in Canada found that 78% of the sports participants are women between 40-49. I imagine the stats are similar in the U.S.

In my own bid to play yenta for the sport, I have encouraged all of our single male friends to forego the singles bars and dating services and take up riding. So far, no takers - which is baffling for I cannot think of a better way to meet women.

If, anything, the panty thread is an indication that there are some pretty terrific, intelligent, talented women in the sport who can similarly boast an exciting underwear collection - what more do men want?

Speaking as a straight guy who utilizes 2 all female barns, I often hear the ladies lament the inability to meet "good " men.
Rule 1-You won’t meet men in USA and Canada at hunter-jumper shows. Try the steeplechase circuit.or go foxhunting.Learn how to shoot.
Rule 2 Go where the men are–sailing clubs, military bases (no they are not all career guys-many are lawyers, doctors, engineers etc doing 2-3 years–Try the happy hour at Officer’s Clubs), gyms, tennis courts, golf lessons, stock market seminars etc
Rule 3 don’t take three goofy girlfriends with you when you go out
Rule 4- don’t drag men to your barn to watch you ride, or to a local horse show, until the 50th date
Rule 5 Wear sleezy underware
Good Luck!

I find it interesting that men are more proportionally represented at the top levels of the sport than at the local levels. Someone explained it to me thus: this is a man’s sport if you consider the physical attributes that contruibute to success (i.e. upper body strength). There may not be as many men in the “up-and-coming” ranks but those that are tend to rise to the top faster than a lot of women because they are simply stronger where it counts. Do y’all by that?

Hey, speak for yourselves! Aww, but I admit, my husband and I started out agreeing to spend our money on a new horse instead of wedding rings, so I guess we have an unfair advantage.

Colin, I thought he said you were there at Washington as well??? I am so confused the bat is just swinging in all directions today!!!

Colin, I’m confused. How does one “prepare” a jock strap? I’d always been under the impression that one merely stepped into it gracefully.

You must not have been around for the jock strap thread, Heidi. I will provide you with a quick recap:

The fought after jock strap is of extremely high quality - and of a rather large size. Moesha, Jair, Jeb and Sea Urchin were caught fighting for it at the department store. Sea Urchin won it - in a rather ruthless brawl, mind you…however, had no use for it so donated it to Moesha.

As for “preparing”, well, by that I mean Moesha was checking the velcro that holds the extra padding - (btw, the padding was specifically designed for men’s Tailored Sportsmans!).

Fortunately, Moesha was able to use almost all of the padding that came with the jock strap, as he had quite a bit of extra room in his Tailored Sportsmans…allowing for extra protection in the jumpers!

Very funny, jumpcrew. As a single female who could add my laments to many others, most of what you say makes sense. But do I really have to wait 50 dates to ask a guy to come to the barn or to a horse show with me??? What if I go golfing, sailing or shooting with him early on? Isn’t that a fair trade??? LOLOL

Oh shoot Heidi, I have made a major faux pas! I assumed you were looking for a hot number on the side and I could have your cast offs!!!

eventing1 - Out of interest, what do your non-horse affiliated male buddies think about your interest and achievements in horses and riding? Do they think its “cool”, “dweebie”, “have no opinion”, or “other”?

Or maybe one reason they like hanging out with you is because with your interest in horses, its a great way to meet girls! LOL!

Thanks!

Moesha, what’s this I’ve heard about a certain tack room incident involving your underwear and a Maryland male trainer?
Inquiring minds want to know…

Colin don’t be silly, that wasn’t a jockstrap, that was one of the bras you left behind at Mosby’s!

I guess if you really have him on the hook, it is OK, but why expose him to the bzillions of other females at your barn?

Any of the straight men who say no to the riding idea should talk to a straight male friend of mine who I met at my old barn. Pretty much all of the MANY women he’s dated in the past several years he has met at the barn. Either that or he got them to take up riding. He would tell the straight men to come on down – except that they might take away some of his future possibilities.

If girls who ride horses are thought of as tomboys, why are boys who ride horses all too often thought of as sissys?

Is this a double standard or what?

It seems like another one of those “macho man” deals.

Oh - VTrider - I had forgotten about THAT story! hehehe! I doubt Moesha will want to talk about it, though…Talk about getting “caught with your pants down”…haha!

We had a convo at our barn recently about how irritating it actually was to have men around in our little world. Kind of like how guys really don’t want women on the golf course or in front of the big screen during game time.

There is always that part of me that toys with the idea of having more men in the sport but when it comes down to it, I like to go to my world (the barn) and shut everything out.

Colin - why does it always turn into an underwear discussion? Did you see the Panty Line thread?

Hm… hadn’t thought of that. Of course at my barn most of the other women are married. And maybe I look better in my chaps than they do in theirs (You’ll have to read other threads on panty lines and underwear to understand)…

Alas Quinn, heidi has captured that tiny percentage of straight male all for herself.

But knowing heidi one call to her 1-800-I’m-YENTA will yeild results and produce greater miracles than the parting of the Red Sea.

One of my exs said to me “you know if I knew how many cute girls ride maybe I would have considered taking lessons…”

Then again we broke up b/c I spent more time with the horse then with him…

So who knows? But if I meet a cute, single, straight, guy who rides he’s mine, all mine!

Sarah

Actually, I must defend Moesha. He was preparring his jock strap for the jumpers… Since Sea Urchin only does the 3’ hunters, no jock strap is required.

Apparently Sea Urchin donated the oversize jock strap that he, Jair and Moesha fought over… yeah, some of us pondered as to whether the donation was based on incorrect size…but Sea Urchin swears that he simly has no use for it???
