And, not much of a post parade that I remember seeing in most of the ‘big’ races NBC has covered. I get that the post parade may be less than interesting for the racing neophyte but one way to convert racing neophytes to more knowledgeable players is the post parade where the sire, dam, trainer, jockey can be important.
I have several friends who won’t watch the races live, only after they know that everyone is home safe. When I got fed up with the increase in my cable bill I eliminated some channels which included all the ones that cover horse racing, like TVG, MSG, etc. but I’m starting to reconsider that decision.
We must have been watching different races. The only crookedness I saw was a head tilt to the right but it was not in the stretch. It was while J.V. was trying to rate him behind Thousand Words. J.V. said Authentic “doesn’t like rating”. Swiss Skydiver had yet to come up and when she did she was on his left.
You shouldn’t be “surprised” by how J.V. rides the horse. He knows what he’s doing.
I saw the same race you did the other day. Watched the whole race replay a few times earlier today to be sure. No hand ride. Well timed, gutsy move by veteran jock on a bold horse who wanted it and pure guts from that filly to grind it out and keep coming back all the way down the stretch.
Rather relieved Authentic has seemingly matured and settled, he was a handful there for awhile, gate antics on race days only, never when schooling. Like him or not BB runs a patient program developing these youngsters into real race horses.
Glad we were watching the same race.
It was great wasn’t it? Thousand Words gave them an opening and through it they went. Just a super duel down the stretch.
Yep. And the head tilt away from the rail is deliberate because he tends to lose focus and be distracted by the rail.
have you not seen the head-on photos? Authentic’s head is in Swiss’s travelling path. I thought it was a horrible ride by JV. He left the door wide open and took it for granted.
And the alternative of having Authentic get too focused on the rail would have been a good thing? Given that JV rode Authentic in the Derby to a first place and a second in the Preakness, he must not know how to ride the horse, right? If Authentic’s head was in Swiss Skydiver’s traveling path (without a link, I’m not going to bother to look for a photo), it certainly didn’t bother her enough given that for the last half of the race Swiss Skydiver was in front of Authentic.

I keep going back to the look on her face. I just finally read “Catch and Kill”, and it seems like she’s thinking “OMG! It’s Harvey Weinstein!!” “RUN!!!”
Have you watched the race replays? Have you read and listened to what the jockeys said post race? A “head on” photo doesn’t give proper perspective and Authentic didn’t interfere with Swiss Skydiver. As @Where’sMyWhite points out, she was leading, so “having his head in her travelling (sic) path” would be difficult.
Look at the first photo above. Do you think that Swiss Skydiver has her head in Authentic’s “traveling path”? Photos are but an instant in time. Watch the race replays and you’ll see.
The horse that gave Swiss Skydiver an opening wasn’t Authentic, it was Thousand Words.
It was a great race and It’s too bad that you feel the need to criticize the jockey (of course you know how to ride the horse better than J.V. ) when the horse, who is not an easy ride, was beaten fair and square by a grand filly, who wanted it more.
The race I watched clearly showed Authentic and SSD fighting for the lead back and forth all the way down the stretch. And are you condemning JVs ride because he has As head where its impeding SSDs progress or because he “ left the door wide open”? Its not an either/ or situation, cant have that both ways. My understanding is a head in another horses traveling path doesn’t matter anyway, only if the rest of the body comes with it and effects the race result.
Sure didn’t see any “open door” during that classic, head to head stretch drive with nothing else even close…now maybe you meant the other, tiring horse who did come out and open the inside lane on the turn before the even got into the stretch? Different horse, different jock. Perhaps thats where your disgust and disdain for JV should be directed?
Exactly, and as my yet to appear unapproved post mentions , that horse was Thousand Words.
When I was watching it live (and the multiple times I viewed the replay on YouTube), my impression of what she was saying was, “You are NOT going by me!”
Loved the post race interview where the trainer said Swiss Skydiver always wants to work, every day.
GREAT race in a year of racing upheaval…
Got a good giggle catching the end of an interview with Kenny McPeek on TVG just now talking about BC preps for his horses.
Said for Swiss Skydiver he was gonna put her on an airplane and fly her around just so she knows she’s getting ready to race  (9 races, 9 different tracks this year).
Did he say in which race he will enter her, or had that already been decided and I missed it?
IIRC, didn’t catch any specific comment but seems like what I saw of the end of the interview with McPeek (was wasn’t just about SS) it was still undecided if she was aiming for the Distaff or Classic. I think it was Scott Hazelton (?) commented that she’d face very different audiences… Midnight Bisou (older filly) in the Distaff and a few nice colts in the Classic. And if she wins the Classic, probably a shoe-in for HOY.
I don’t know what I’d want if I was her owner… I can see reasons for running in both and avoiding both
Won’t be Midnight Bisou since she’s retired.
You’re right - I thought they mentioned her… but maybe misremembered
Still a tough call, at least it would be for me
Brain f*rt… Monomoy Girl and Shedaresthedevil for the Distaff :o
