Talk to me about thoroughbred hunter stallions

I breed AQHA hunters and am looking to bring in some diversity and new blood. As such, I am only interested in thoroughbred stallions and no other breeds (cannot use warmbloods or otherwise). The mares used will be AQHA registered with varying amounts of TB blood.

I will preface by saying I’m dumb with USEF everything. But talk to me about high quality thoroughbred hunter stallions at stud. Proven ability to throw height is highly preferred, superb movement/flat knees are an absolute must as it’s prefered that these prospects can show the under saddle for a few years before starting over fences. Great minds are a must as well; I aim to breed non-pro and youth friendly horses.

So please throw some names and bloodlines my way for research.

Runningtothealter, aka “Rocky”, is a TB stallion who stands in PA at The Windrush. He throws height and hunter movement. His offspring have done well on the line at Devon, Sallie B. Wheeler, etc.

I’ve handled some of his babies. Send me a PM if you’d like more details.

No horse by that name is coming up in equineline. Can you check the spelling?

Oh, it’s Runnintothealter. No g.

yes, that’s him

Wasn’t there a nice Private Account son (or gson?) standing somewhere in TX a while back? They tend to have huntery way of going and are big boned, tall, and always seem to be good eggs. I cannot remember his name, maybe someone else can recall the thread…

On the subject of sons, there is apparently a Yellow Creek son standing too. That’s another horse that would be interesting to hunter jumpers, I think, but I don’t think he throws height.

Innkeeper, if he is still available, would be one of my top picks. He stood for a few years at a vet school that is escaping me at the moment… He won’t throw height.

Final Pool would be another top pick, not sure if there is still frozen of him… but he had many hunter jumpers… Seem to remember his kids being on the small side though.

Just A Devil was favored in hunters too, not sure if you can get him anymore.

There is Friend Or Foe, who is in VA I believe. I’m ambivalent on him as a sport sire but for AQHA I could see him being ok. I haven’t seen him in person. He isn’t very tall himself.

Artrageous has a few offspring that definitely could be hunters. EDIT: apparently it was the owner and not him to have an injury - but he does have some quality offspring on the ground, IIRC, Foxhaven Farm on FB has a few videos of some really nice horses by Artrageous. He does seem to throw height and does have a huntery canter.

If you can even get it, Watermill Swatch would bring some athleticism to the equation but I am not sure if he is a huntery mover himself. He will not kill movement (IMHO) but his movement seems more eventery to me.

Default is another one, but I am not sure how he is for hunters.

Baatesh was put through a WB stallion testing a few years ago. Haven’t heard much about him but his bloodlines were promising.

There is one more horse that is also escaping me, he was, IIRC, related to Friend Or Foe - maybe through Friend’s Lake? Someone told me about him a year or so ago, that he was in VA, and a nice mover. Wish I thought to write these things down since they always come in handy eventually.

Honestly, if you can find a Pleasant Colony, AP Indy, Meadowlake or Private Account son standing for sport, I think those tend to consistently pass on huntery movement and the height and brains you’re looking for.

Thanks for the ideas. Finals are over today for me, so I have my evenings back for research!!

I have heard of RunninToTheAlter so I’m thinking he must have some get on the QH circuit. Or perhaps I’ve looked at mares by him. Don’t remember.

The others are foreign, which is fine. I’m looking for new stuff!

Pleasant Colony and Mr Prospector were always my top picks for when I was shopping for TB mares. I always liked how those were built.

There is also Harvest Moon.http://www.williamssporthorses.ca/

I don’t think all the recommended horses are TBs? I see some warmbloods on the list.

Another TB sporthorse I didn’t see on the list was Sea Account

Is Jones Hall still standing?

Innkeeper is still at VA Tech, according to their website: https://www.arec.vaes.vt.edu/arec/middleburg/sporthorse-breeding/stallions.html

Which ones aren’t TBs?

I didn’t suggest Sea Account or AFR in my original list, but both should be up there. AFR us no longer standing but there are sons, I don’t think they are pure TB.

I would also suggest Salute The Truth but he is also no longer standing, and I think he is more eventery.

ETA - whoops, I see what I did. Brain was on autopilot and I typed “Just The Best” rather than Just A Devil. Fixed - thank you!

Just the Best was the one I saw

Here’s a link to Sea Accounts…just up the road a few miles from me. Think his owner is on here as Cyrizmom or something like that.

There is another really nice TB stallion, advanced eventer, and, I want to say, standing in Canada but I can not remember his name. Maybe another post knows who I am talking about.

If you don’t mind colour Arctic Blue is standing at Stone House Meadows

Thanks! That’s the one! Any chance you know the Private Account one as well?

I think the one you’re thinking of standing in Canada is possibly Rather Well?

Ok I’ll go through some of these tonight. Thanks for posting!

but to clear up some confusion, I’m not in Canada. I really need to change my location. I live in Wyoming, but most people don’t seem to know where that is. Seems like our weather rivals Canada at times. And I’ve had people literally confuse where I live for Canada. I blame our public school system… kidding…

im not familiar with importing semen from Canada so that may be an issue for some of these.

YES That him. Rather Well. Very nice stallion.

Sea Account is a grand son of Private Account. Is that the one you are thinking of?

I agree RW is wonderful. I know a few of his kids, great movers, talented jumpers, good disposition. Don’t know what more you would want, right? I believe Doug Payne has a few RW horses in his program.

No, the horse I’m thinking of had a name starting with an E, I think.
