Talk to me about your Appaloosa Sport Horses.

I know I’ve been inquiring about several different crosses/types recently. Doing a bunch of research as my next horse will be a keeper and will stay with me forever so I want to get it right. I’ve done a few searches on COTH and have found some great information so far, but haven’t found anything terribly recent.

It seems that the App. Sport Horses can be quite athletic and handy? I’m interested in something to do Hunters/Jumpers/All around type of stuff so I know I want to stay away from the stock types. I’ve heard great things about the Waps bred horses, particularly Waps Rolls Royce. Anyone here have one of his offspring? Are they generally pretty quiet/easy to start? Any breeders in the mid Atlantic region? I’d be most interested in a solid color prospect or something with just a few spots, not a huge fan of the really loudly colored Apps. I know a poster on here has a lovely chestnut with just a few snowflakes, he seems to be wonderful! Thanks in advance, you’ve all been incredibly helpful!

Waps Rolls Royce has his own FB page if you want to see pics of offspring. I’m a fan, I think he’s a nice stallion. If I thought there was more of a market I would breed a TB mare to him. His kids are supposed to be very quiet, although I’ve never met any personally. I’ve always loved the sporty apps - I grew up with several Wap bred horses in our barn that evented and hunted.

Hubby had 4 Appy polo ponies. 2 were Appy/ TB crosses: nice althletes with good minds that jumped well/ came from the Appy race circuit. one was a more stock type: not a modern QH type though, was a Plaudit line . not quite as athletic but very sweet and jumped half decently. One gelding was a nutter. None were Waps though I have only heard good things about them

We’ve been very happy with our Appy crosses, but we are using a stallion with no modern QH blood on Warmblood mares. Our oldest are only yearlings but we are really pleased in that they seem sensible and quiet minded while maintaining movement and athleticism.

Appaloosa horses have a well earned reputation for soundness and that, IMO is what sets them apart from the other “stock horse breeds” and is a huge plus in breeding sport horses. You probably want to stay away from the “spotted Quarter Horses”.

I’ve only had experience with one WAP and it wasn’t from Virginia Hoods? program. It was not a good minded horse, but every horse has a dam too.

Appies don’t break if they’re Appies. Mine lived to 28 dead sound, blind, still doing I-1 work. I’ve never seen one that can’t jump.

The Waps bred ones from Virginia Hood (who is dead) are super hunters. There are some people doing some good Appy sporthorse breeding.

Patty is one to look at. (I like your Lottie filly! [as a dressage person] If she were bigger, I might be getting an extra horse

Altamont Farms is doing some great breeding, in Georgia I think.

Thanks! I have checked out his Facebook page, interested in personal experiences as well.

I have a big soft spot for Apps. I really love them. I had one App/TB cross, picked him out of the field as a totally unstarted 2yo. The jumping photo is the first time I free jumped him, as a 3yo just to see how he took to jumping. The conformation shots were taken at 4yo, before I sold him. He’s still one heck of a jumper, spent some time in the hunter ring and then moved on to eventing. I also had a full App, he’s my total love, but hated jumping. He was given to my BFF for her lesson/therapeutic riding program where he’s since been purchased by one of her students.

Thanks!

I think Apps are greatly overlooked as sport horses, generally. I have had several apps and app X’s(all sport bred or WB cross, no WAP babies) and find them to be remarkably sensible, super easy to start, no nonsense about traveling, athletic and generally happy, healthy, easy horses.

Most of the ones I has were solid colored and didn’t look “app” at all. These ones sold for good money - they looked, moved, and jumped like the WBs.

The more I read on old threads about these sport bred Apps the more I think one of them would be a great fit for me! Keep the stories/info coming please!

I have a soft spot for appaloosas.

My first horse was a registered Appy - mostly foundation bred, but with a bit of TB and saddlebred in there - minimal QH.

He was very athletic, and did well in eventing, jumpers AND hunters.

He had a great jump - and was a wonderful all round horse.

My current horse is an Appy x TB - Chocklate Confetti line. I purchased her as a weanling, and she has been SUPER easy. I broke her, and have done 100% of her training myself. She is a solid jumper, trail rides, low level dressage - easy easy easy and always a barn favorite. Total puppy dog personality.

Although I will say, mine is NOT subtlety colored! But I know some of the “Confetti” appaloosas do just have a small blanket or frosting.

Can’t really help with the discussion since I have been out of the Appy world for years. I use to ride one- palamino blanket mare- mainly western but a bit of english way back when growing up.

Appsolute - love your mare! Any pics of her under saddle?

Glad to find this Posting.
I will start by saying I have known the “WAPS” from JG Appaloosas for over 20 yrs now . And let me tell you they are AWESOME… The size, brain, and movement let alone the talent it is all there. I have one now that showed on the line and I am planning on a Breeding. Waps Rolls Royce is a TOP Hunter Producer. and Also Waps Appaluse will give you a great sport horse. There are several others too. I know a breeder in PA. Megan Davey who is standing Waps Rolls Royce and she has a couple of VERY Fancy youngsters. A filly and a colt. Both are Dun and great movers, very pretty, and will be ultra fancy . You can’t go wrong with either one . she is awesome to deal with as a owner/ breeder. These guys are ever lasting and people are always looking to buy one . If more questions please ask, I’m sure we being the owners and breeders and give you all the answers you need. You can’t go wrong with a WAP …

I’ve been in contact with Megan and her horses are indeed lovely! Would love a heads up on any other breeders in Pa/md/nj as well!

You know the one that I have for sale at the moment- http://www.benchmarksporthorses.com/horses-for-sale.html but I took him for my friend because I love apps! They are seriously so smart and athletic. You do have to look for the sporty types but when you find one then you really have something fun. I think they are just such good all around horses. The one I have is sired by Always in the Mood who apparently throws the huntery types of horses and has some world champion hunters from what I was told. He is such a good mover and quite fancy in my opinion. They tend to be brave and willing partners. The app’s I have had were always super sound and had great feet not to mention easy keepers. I evented mine up through training level and he could also show in the hunter ring.

I think if you get the right one they are just as competitive and desirable as any other breed.

I have a WB x App (R-line hanoverian to Rubinstein I and out of a Plaudit-bred Appaloosa) and she’s lovely. Super sensible, very quiet. While very sensitive, she is however somewhat lazy and has a bit of an opinionated attitude as her workload has increased with age/training. You really have to work with her and do a lot of “asking” opposed to “telling” or else she seems to get offended and the sass makes an appearance .

Big girl at 16.2 as a 4 y/o and very solid. The tail is growing and thickening I swear .

Jleegriffith, if yours was a bit bigger I’d be all over him. He’s adorable!!

Cataluna, your mare is quite pretty too!

I need to dig up some! Being as I ride solo most of the time, I have hardly any, and my friend has been slow to send photos from our last XC school.

But here are a few liberty shots from last week…

Appsolute, your mare is stunning!

I currently have 3 appaloosa sport horses. A 9 year old mare who is an Appaloosa warmblood cross. We don’t know her pedigree 100% but her dam is a leopard mare name Just Us Polka Dots. We bred her twice. We had a 2013 colt by Waps Rolls Royce and a 2014 filly by Dutch warmblood stallion Ruben O.
