Tall boots for a very tall/slim calf

I am having an impossible time finding tall boots that fit me and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions of a boot I haven’t tried before I give in and buy custom ones.

Anything ariat is not tall or slim enough (tried them all!)
Tried the mountain horse supremes, 2 pairs of devon-aire ones, ovation, and dublin. Everything for $100-$900!

Nothing at the smartpak or dover store fit and I tried everything!
They finally figured out that der dau does semi-customs that would be tall enough, but when I tried them on they were huge in the ankle and generally too wide in the calf. I would really prefer not to spend $650 on boots and still need to get them tailored.
So smartpak suggested I buy full custom der daus for $950 (minimum). I would really like to avoid this

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I’m about 5’11 for the record but all leg.
Thanks for reading, sorry that was so long!

Sergio Grasso’s come in TONS of sizes and generally fit very slim legs well. They are pricey though.

We’ve had good luck fitting my kid with long, twig-thin legs. In the past, she had a couple pairs of Beval Puissance boots, and I thought she’d always be in them for ‘off the shelf’ boots. However, last summer she got a pair of Ariat Monaco boots that are just beautiful! The way they fit her legs is amazing. They have a million sizes and are practically like customs.

I need to qualify that statement by saying that in general, I hate Ariat boots (tall & paddock) and the other styles have never fit the kid well. Also, I don’t think the Monacos would hold up to heavy day-in & day-out riding. They’re strictly show boots for my kid… One more thing, I think they’re only worth it if you can buy them on sale. For the cost of full retail, you could go custom.

Beval’s about to have their big sale…

My legs are also tall and slim… sorry to say I had to go the custom route. I had a pair of tall/slim Ariats, and I would wrap polos around my calves to make the boots look like they fit.

I love my Vogels, though- 12.5" around, and I think about 22/23" tall. Here’s a picture (the square pad is because it was an IHSA show ;)).

I don’t know how old you are, but if you’re a junior you might consider looking into the Vogel Young Rider boots. They’re a lesser cut of leather (shoulder, I think), but they base price is substantially lower than the “regular” Vogels. I believe under $700.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

spmoonie - I haven’t tried the Sergio Grassos yet I’ll look into the measurements on those and see if I can try some on

Beastieslave - Judging by the measurements, I think the beval puissance ones might work unless they drop a lot. Do you remember how much your daughter’s boots dropped? I tried the Ariat Monacos and they were too short.

Lazy Palomino Hunter - It sounds like I’m going to be ordering a pair of boots with measurements very similar to yours. Thanks for the picture! I’m 17, so I would definitely be interested in the Vogel Young Rider boots. I’ll see what I can find about them. Do you know if I can still get them fully customized?

If I am remembering correctly the Vogel Young Rider boots come with all the options at no extra cost except for zippers. They are well worth the money!

Do you have a big foot? If so, you might want to look into men’s too - the “small” foot sizes for guys tend to also have the corresponding slim leg and they usualy also come in tall/long heights. I’m tall and slim enough that all the ladies’ boots in my foot size (11) were too wide in the calf, even in slims - I ended up w/ Mountain Horse Richmond’s in a men’s 9 long, and while they’re still a bit too short, the calf is just about perfect.

boots

We’ve tried everything under the sun for my daughter. I personally hate Ariats. They don’t last and the quality is questionable. The Ariat Monacos do fit her but I’d never spend that much on an Ariat boot. They are cut much taller and slimmer than their other boots.

They are about $900. If you could get them on sale maybe but from looking at the leather they are not going to last.

Willson & Davidson has full customs with all of the options for $899, fully lined but beautiful soft leather which will last. They are really nice. Once my daughter is done growing she’ll have those.

We did find a pair of Grand Prix boots which fit her too. They were the extra tall. Grand Prix is revamping their boots and these were on sale for around $400. You could PM me if you wear a size 9 1/2 and I could tell you where they were. Not returnable however if they don’t fit. They were a tad too small in the foot but the leg was high and slim enough for her.

Grand Prix normal price is around $600 ish I think so that would probably be in your range. The Bevals while they fit too don’t last either. The Sergio’s weren’t tall enough for her even in tall.

I would second (third?) the suggestion to try the Sergio Grasso boots. They come in a very wide range of size and width combinations.

I like mine so well that I actually wear them instead of my custom Vogels. The quality is lovely and they are comfortable.

OK, well my calf isn’t exactly “tall”, but my pair of field boots are unbelieveable!! I forget what brand they are, all I remember is they’re French and the name is something like “R. Derine.” They are made pretty slim, so even though I was a slim calf in my old Ariats I was a regular in these boots. I also have really skinny ankles and these boots wern’t baggy at all!! They required absoloutly NO breaking in, I literally tried them on, wore them around the house for the night after that, and went to a show the next weekend. They were perfect, not stiff or anything! They were about $600, waaay cheaper than the Monacos, and they look really similar IMO!

I have heard that they fit only a very few number of people, but they are definetly worth trying out!

Here is the best picture I could find of them (please forgive my terible heels! :o) http://ipcrew.com/newsite/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/wcm_9407.jpg

Hope this helps!

beval puissance. mine did not drop much.

My 4’9" daughter has a size 7 foot but an 11" calf, I kid you not. Sergio’s didn’t work. Beval has a new ‘Arena’ field boot for a little less than $500, so less than the Puissance (which wouldn’t work). I don’t like the Arena’s as much as the Sergio’s but they’re nice and they were our only choice without going custom. Plus, for the price I don’t mind having to replace them when she outgrows them.

I know someone with the Monaco’s and the zipper broke after only a few months of light riding.

Yep, they are “full custom,” just like the regular boots. The reason they’re less expensive is that they are made from a lesser cut of leather.

Thank you everyone for the awesome suggestions! I now have lots of ideas to look into and hopefully I’ll find something that fits. I would be SO happy with anything less than $950 that fit!

FYI, you don’t have to actually BE a young rider to order young rider boots.

Vogel and Sergio Grasso both have Young Rider boots for around $680.

Although if you can find a boot that works for you in every regard except the calf size, it might make sense to buy a cheap pair and have them taken in.
Exactly how small is your calf and how big is your foot?

Exactly how small is your calf and how big is your foot?[/QUOTE]

My feet are about a 9/9.5 depending on brand. I actually don’t know the exact measurements of my calf, but the der daus which were the slimmest I tried on were a 13 inch and still baggy especially through the ankle.

Yeah, that sounds like a case for custom.

I think the Sergios might be even cheaper now that the exchange rate is favorable. This British site sells them for about $400 US:

I don’t remember them dropping much. My girls have had three pairs of Puissance boots between them, and they’ve been very nice boots.

Yep I think custom would be best. I got Cavallos custom made, and my feet are quite big (8.5) and I have super long and skinny calves. Cavallo actually called my saddlery I ordered them from to double check the measurement because they seemed so strange! Haha. But they fit like a glove. There is nothing worse that baggy, too short boots!

Just remember if you look after the boots thet will last for years and years. It is a large initial output to buy them, but so worth it in years to come.

I just went thru this with my DD. I looked at the Bevals Arenas (didn’t love the leather) and Ariat Crowne Pros (didn’t love the leather). I was just about to plunk down the $$ for the Vogel Young Riders when her boots came in with a flat tire - broken zipper and major air conditioning in the foot so I didn’t have the time to wait for the Vogels, the lead time is about 4 months. I ended up with the Treadstone french calfskin boots. The leather is GORGEOUS and they fit her like a glove - skinny ankle, long and skinny calf. I’m not sure how long they will last as the leather is soft but for the money, they are much nicer than any of the other boots we tried on.

I ordered them from Equus Now and while they didn’t have her size in stock - they called the distributor and had them drop shipped to my house, so snaps for Equus Now and their excellent customer service!
