Tariffs impacting showing

Border guards have always had extreme amounts of discretionary power over who enters the US or indeed Canada. In the past they would just turn you away. It happened often enough for Canadians, or people on visitors visas to Canada, wanting to visit the US.

The difference now is that someone who would just be turned away 5 years ago is now much more likely to be arrested and sent to an ICE detention center and not allowed contact with lawyer or family. It would appear there is some kind of quota system at work where border guards will pick the easy targets that in the past would just be refused entry. Because they want high numbers for the ICE detention system.

That is a horribly scary thought.

That seems like the only explanation.

It sends a message to everyone. This past Saturday, I asked a young grad student at my barn if she was planning on going to the protests. She said she wanted to but she was afraid that if things went wrong, she could be expelled from school or worse, get a charge that would prevent her from pursuing her chosen profession. This is Trump america where native born Americans are afraid to raise their voices. Trump’s supporters are fine with this. Ask them, I have.

Protesting 101: don’t tell people you’re going to the protests (well, be very smart about who you tell). And don’t take your phone (or even a burner you bought on a card). No electronics at all, really. Bluetooth is tracking. Don’t carry ID. Cover tattoos, wear a mask. And don’t post about it on social! Protests are like Fight Club, but far more real.

But the young lady has valid concerns. It’s a risk people have to take in the face of such threats, and it’s exactly the type of fear TPTB want to instill. Here in the US, yeah, but honestly anywhere that protests are happening. There are ways to minimize your individual risk, but it’s still a risk you have to take consciously.

This is all said as someone who studies these things as a personal interest, not an expert or organizer or anything.

We have to be careful what we say even on this board. A thread just got closed after the snitch found a couple of remarks about presidents from yesteryear.

When you’ve told your base there’s a crisis when there really isn’t
you need to manufacture one however you can.

Are you sure it was the mentions of former presidents and not the meandering into tariffs and their effects on global economics (and the associated undercurrent of blame and admin bad) that was the triggering event? And the advertising of a liberal-only forum considering what has been circulating about the FB one? Topics like this thread is being steered into currently?

Isn’t it time to accept the real reason why politics isn’t allowed here anymore and either follow the rules or move on? For anyone who doesn’t understand why, then I suggest they go back and read the last post in the recently shut down Political Pressure Relief Valve thread. The thread should be fine as long as it stays focused on the horse industry.

Just a guess since everybody was getting along until someone posted otherwise. đŸ„ž

Back to tariffs and how they impact showing and nothing else. There were a couple of farriers talking about whether they would be allowed to work at the shows if they weren’t directly tied to a particular barn or client. I wasn’t part of their conversation but I was thinking the show might have several local farriers on call. Does anyone know at this point?

“Politics” isn’t something that exists in a box. It impacts people’s lives.

Yes, please. We don’t want to get back into hosting actual policy debate.

The Canadian shows normally have good farriers on call if that was the question, but for long circuits like two weeks of Thunderbird and four at Spruce Meadows, a lot of riders like to have their regular farrier parachute in to shoe their string.

That’s very typical in the US for sure.

We’ve done stuff like this casually for years but it sounds like a visa will be required now, and I’d be especially careful with anyone who isn’t a passport holding citizen on one side of the border or the other.

A visa will be required for an American to get into Canada? I have not heard anything about that idea.

This is what is sounded like. They were talking about making extra money if they went to a particular show (week or more I’d guess) and since they shoe for several barns if being attached to that barn / clients would cover them.

I have set up a reddit community for just these topics if anyone is interested.

One of my veterinarians who has worked a lot in the US over the years, told me yesterday, that he won’t go anymore. He is a white male.
It seems all rules no longer apply.

I spotted it recently but since then it does not seem to appear in Reddit search. If you can provide a direct link somehow I’d be stoked to get it rolling. My special talent is to connect horsy things to even the most obscure political or economic theory.

Wow.

Is he worried about getting into the US? Or not getting out?
