Tastiest electrolytes

My mare isn’t a heavy sweater but we often compete at higher temps and I feel she needs electrolytes.

Her Horsetech custom vit/min has the equivalent of 2tbsp of salt in it per vet recommendations and she’s not a fan (I previously created the blend by hand and discovered the salt was what she dislikes) - even mixed into 3# of soaked beet.

I use Apple Elite at shows in her water and she doesn’t drink well with the recommended amount in there. I’ve tasted it - it’s a bit salty.

She doesn’t go for salt blocks either, and I’d prefer not to syringe electrolytes into her.

So, what’s the tastiest electrolyte out there?

We have been using Gallagher’s Water. It is an alfalfa-flavored electrolyte powder mix that they drink. Our primary use is to keep the horses hydrated. When offered they will drink the entire bucket without wondering away.

Of the seven head we have none ever refuses to drink it

I have the pickiest horse ever when it comes to electrolytes. I second Gallagher’s water. She’ll gulp an entire 8 qt bucket of it at once. I usually do 1/2 packet in a full flat back water bucket. They recommend a full packet per 2 gallons but I feel it’s a little strong.

For regular electrolytes, she’ll only eat apple a day (and only a tiny bit, only in soaked pellets 🤦🏻).

My semi picky horse eats the SmartLytes pellets by Smartpak. He can be wary of some powders but eats the pellets great. They’re really affordable too, I pay around $18/mo.

My guy is obsessed with the Mad Barn electrolyte powder. It certainly smells delicious!

UltraCruz makes an electrolyte pellet. If you PM me, I’d be happy to send samples (if you are in the US  )

My picky picky horse isn’t a huge fan of the Gallaghers. If you would like me to send you a packet to try, I’d be happy to do so, just PM me! I kept my leftovers in case someone at the barn needs it for something. I bought it when she first came to be mine because she was not a fan of the water at our barn.

She won’t eat electrolytes in any form and her salt block has been untouched for months. I pretty much gave up and though she is salt deficient (according to Feed XL), I can’t make her eat what she won’t eat.

I’ve never tried Gallagher’s Water, but another friend of mine swears by it.
My horse loves his Himalayan salt lick and Mad Barn electrolytes.

Mine doesn’t care for them, or any salt block, sadly

I use paste so I know they get the full dose.

My horse drinks warm water better than cold even if he’s hot and sweaty. Play around with different flavorings at home, I need to try the Gallaghers as that sounds like something my horse would love.

Someone at my barn uses this and let me test a bit on my horse. He ate a small chunk of it right out of my hand and looked like he wanted more  It smells amazing!

I use Purina RepleniMash anytime I want to add electrolytes or encourage water consumption. Most (not all, of course) horses eat it right up - if they’ll eat soaked beet pulp, they shouldn’t turn up their nose at RepleniMash.

Favorites here are KPP Summer Games (reminds me of orange gatorade) or RepleniMash. The Summer Games easily mixes into their regular meal. I’ve never tried adding to their water.

I also use the KPP Summer Games electrolyte. I feed it with his Outlast portion just dry and he cleans it up.

While it lacks the benefits of proper electrolytes I have never had a horse turn down molasses water. We use during butter cold stretches to get more water in them, not necessarily to supplement heavy sweaters in summer. Not exactly what the OP was asking, but maybe a starting point?

Yep, that’s the one currently in her stall. We tried a white block, loose salt, loose himalayan, lol.
I’ve never had a picky horse before so I will say I get a little nutty with the trying.

Good old powdered Gatorade, Most everyone I know down here in Florida uses it. I had a horse turn his nose up at Gallaghers but loves Gatorade.

Purina recently came out with a water additive that my horses suck down.

Purina replenimash - hands down best water additive.

I use the stress dex electrolytes. This one doesn’t have a ton of added sugar either. One of my horses is so picky, and this is one of the few ones he will eat easily in his grain

I use Dynaspark- the horses love the taste and it’s liquid so easy to use. Most of mine have picked around the powders.
