TB Broodmare bloodlines that we like

If I am looking for a tb broodmare, what lines are desireable for hunters, which one for eventers, and which ones to avoid? I know to avoid the Storm Cat, Unbridled. This would be for breeding to another tb stallion.

I’ve always liked Halo and Clever Trick lines. I know Halo’s can have temperments.

I have a broodie by Fabeled Monarch. She is beautiful , athletic and a fab mover.

I love Alydar in my mares pedigree

Are you looking for broodmare sires or are you looking for mare lines in broodmares that are special? To me, it’s very important to have sires from strong mare lines and dams from strong mare lines.

I’d avoid the two lines that you mention, Halo less than Phone Trick. Phone Trick, for the number of mares that he got, has been one of the less productive modern lines for sport horses–at least for event horses that have made it to FEI levels. Halo has produced sport horses.

I have a Storm Cat mare who also has Thatch in her lines - she has produced 5 foals to date - all gorgeous, sensible and willing - one won his inspection. They have lovely movement and jump. She is the epitome of the classic TB - big, muscular, a tad bit long in the back, lovely hindend, great conformation, knows her job and does it well. I have bred her to warmbloods with plenty of blood. When you nixed the Storm Cat line I was perplexed. I couldn’t be more pleased with the foals my Storm Cat mare is producing.

My best TB mare was by Miner’s Mark(Mr. P out of Personal Ensign) and she was out of a Buckpasser mare. I know some people don’t like the Mr. P line much, but it works for this girl. She was gorgeous though her tempement was kind of tough. She is a Premium mare with the RPSI and has produced a few racing babies too that actually are racing. I had her for 1 breeding and she produced an even better filly. Filly is half Hano, was highest scoring foal at her inspection and was awarded Gold Premium. Said filly is now grown up with her own foal. She just went for her breeding approval, and is currently the highest scoring mare of the year. In fact, only 1 mare in the last 2 1/2 years has scored higher than her. Yes, she is bred for the hunter ring.

I guess what I am asking is what lines are marketable and desireable. I know there are people from a sporthorse point of view that will avoid Storm Cat, Unbridled and Halo. Then there are lines that are known for good sporthorses. I am looking for the best in both sire and mare.

Missy Baba (Raja Baba)

There are broodmare lines that produce good broodmares. It seems to be a trait that is independent of performance.

I love to see Missy Baba/Gay Missile in a pedigree.

This is not intended as advertising, but I would very seriously look for an A Fine Romance daughter.
He has been very prepotent for his type and temperament and he has a wonderful sporthorse TB pedigree (his granddam is Gay Missile).
Many of the TB mares who have been bred to him have very good TB sporthorse credentials.
In addition, many of them are themselves proven in sport, both as eventers, jumpers and in the hunter ring, and a number of them have been approved in WB registries.
They are out there, and I would be happy to try to help you find one. (I don’t have any for sale).

fave damsires for me are Alydar, Buckpasser, Well Decorated, Pleasant Colony, In Reality, Indian Hemp, Mahmoud, Blue Larkspur, Sir Gaylord, Herbager, Grey Dawn, The Axe.

I love the Kris S line.

Stom Cat, Unbridled and Halos are on my list to avoid/I do not like them.SC/Halos can be tough tempered and UB with fragile legs. Mr.P I mostly avoid due to leg confo soundness issues but it depends on the son. Fappaino, Not for Love are better sons. Hoist The Flag is a mixed bag of usually talented jumpers, good movers and stubborn tempered. The Bold Rulers are similarly talented but quirky horses. Not “bad”…just often forward and opinionated…maybe better suited to being eventers than hunters.

for a show hunter…What A Pleasure is a great line.

Used to find that line in a LOT of TB show hunters. A bit harder to find up close…typically found in more turf bred horses. But they usually have fantastic movement and a good jump.

I also like In Reality…usually scopey jumpers.

It all depends
I’m older.
My Halo grandson is called Halo because he wears one. Takes a joke and is Ammie friendly.
He looks like a WB and has more bone than most TB’s that I’ve owned ( and that would be a lot of horses over many years ).
There are exceptions.
They have been a success as sporthorses as evidenced by the USEF sire lists.
I hate to dismiss an entire bloodline family.

I agree. It so depends on the entire pedigree.

This boy is the most ammy friendly horse and easiest to bring along OTTB that I have ever owned…and also has Halo in his pedigree (and Mr. P). To me he looks like his dam…and Halo.

While I event him…he would have been at home as a show hunter (and now that he is fat with some time off…he looks like one too;)).

His legs are nice and straight with bone that matches his body…and are not the issue that is keeping him sidelined at the moment. I wish he was a mare…

He is one of the prettiest horses I’ve ever owned…at least in IMO:D Pictures are him competing training level (3’3") which he was doing with less than a year of training after racing.

Tell me more! Do you have a link to where I can read about the lines that are known for this?

For TB producing families go to Thoroughbred Heritage and have a root around.

I adore my TB mare but I’m biased. Since nobody will know her bloodlines not worth commenting on here. The only sires people would know come from the sire line of Broken Hearted. But her kids are just starting to do things so we shall wait and see if she becomes a damline or not. Her dam line has thrown up the sire African Drum who was approved KWPN and is the dam sire of Tinka’s Serenade. A top international horse. That is from the tail female family which we just don’t talk about on here. It’s all about the stallions in the pedigree.

Terri

I can only speak to TBs. When I say it’s independent of performance, I mean that they are able to pass on performance for generations through daughters. But in Germany, there is the line of mares who descend from Waldrun. In the UK and US, there is the Uvira line, the Black Ray line, the Dynamo line, the Imperatrice line, the Cherokee Rose line, the Padua line, the Aloe line, the Agnes lines, the Pretty Polly line, the Lady Josephine line, La Troienne and Adargatis, the Goody Two Shoes line, Queeny, the Bonfire line, the Beaver Street line and so on. There are actually quite a few of these. These are lines that with much regularity are able to pass on quality for sport and racing to the foals.

In history, there are Queen Mary and Pocahontas, Concertina and Black Duchess, and the greatest of all for sport, The Alexander Mare of 1790 and her daughters.

I’d agree that poking around in TB Heritage is very educational, but would add that poking around here is also worth the time:
