Anyone have Buckpasser breeding in their horses? What characteristics show?
lovely tempered and athletic horses. One of my FAVORITE lines to see in a TB!
My guy has it on the top and bottom. He is a big, athletic TB, with wonderful neck. He doesn’t have a great trot, but has a wonderful canter and a very pretty hunter-jump. It’s hard to get a bad jumping shot (unless you look at his rider ). He is very careful, almost too careful; I don’t think he could be a jumper. He has the ‘typical’ TB feet that require a lot of attention. He’s not terribly complicated, my very non-riding SO can hop on and trot around, but he’s a horse you pick and choose your battles with. He’s a one person horse, and a complete goof on the ground. He raced 30 times, and I imagine this had a lot to do with his quirkiness.
He doesn’t have any spook, which I love. He may not like the ponies in the schooling ring  but he stood like a rock when the neighbors began rockblasting
Here is a shot from last October, after owning him a couple months in the start of his new career. A little skinny, and really reaching for that treat If I clip him in the next week or so, he may get an updated shot.

My girl has Buckpasser in her damsire line. She’s very brave and bold and smart. Too young to be ridden, so I can’t say anything about her under saddle, but I’m told she learns quickly.
She wants to be the alpha mare.
Two of the best for sporthorses: Buckpasser and Turn-To (IMHO)
My wonderful old girl is a Buckpasser granddaughter, by Pass. I’m glad to have her 2yo filly so I’m hoping all the good stuff came through!
Are crappy feet a Buckpasser thing? My old girl does have positively awful feet. I love everything else about her but I’m praying my filly gets her dad’s feet.
One of my best show hunters of all time was a Buckpasser Grand son. He was by a horse called Pass the Glass. He was a fabulous jumper, winning classes at indoors, Palm Beach, Capital Challenge, you name it. He even won the hack at the National Horse Show, when it really WAS the National Horse Show. He was also stunning and very correct. The only bad thing I can say is that he was a little snarky to be around. Not much close Buckpasser blood around anymore.
Buckpasser was foaled 45 years ago, in 1963, so although hes in quite a few pedigrees, his influence is apt to be fairly remote. He is the main reason that the Tom Fool line survived (Buckpasser
s sire), but years ago there were some excellent Tom Fool jumpers.
My Irish colt, Formula One, descends from Buckpasser on his dam`s side.
I think when people ask about stallions very far back, like Buckpasser, Bold Ruler, Ribot, Hail to Reason, etc, we need to look at the more recent aspects of the pedigree in question to get more realistic answers.
Not that the old lines are meaningless. Just imagine the state of modern horse breeding if Nearco had been gelded as a yearling!
Love Buckpasser!
I have a young gelding with Buckpasser top and bottom. He is tall, nice trot and canter and the best hunter jump. Perfect form from the start and very athletic. He has a gorgeous head and good feet. I know both his dam and sire well and they both have very similar traits - very pretty and nice movers.
Here are some pics of Buckpasser and his grey son Silver Buck. The last pic is a Silver Buck mare - 16.2hh and fantastic mover.
goodmorning, your guy is handsome. How old is he?

Yes! My guy’s parents are both lovely hunter types.
One of our stallions is a grandson of Buckpasser and I LOVE the Buckpasser line! Smart, athletic and super well put together! I have only good things to say about that line

Yes and no. Yes he is way back in most pedigrees…but BP, HTR, Bold Ruler, Northern D are also very prepotent for type.
Our lovely stallion that died was out of a Silver Buck bred mare and she is still being bred by her current owner to a WB. I heard from racing folks that Silver Buck is known in KY as one of the easiest/kindest horses to handle in the stallion barn.
buckpasser
i have 3 by coincidence, Buckpasser relatives. an 8 yo, 4 yo, 2yo. all are very athletic classically elegant to look at, smart sensible and very trainable.
good feet too. the 8 yo is a successful hunter so will see how the youths do this year.
Great, Great, Great Grandson
Buckpasser is in the pedigree of my pony stallion. He is far back–but there.
Despite Buckpasser being fairly far back I also think it is a type that gets passed down. The older, French/Eglish/Irish lines with big uphill build, ability to rock back and jump, big feet for the grass, classic distance bloodlines. The steeplechase, older European type
that is quite different from the smaller speedsters of today’s American breeding. Now, I know that the classic distance horses had speed bred into them and vice versa, but the big eventers are a certain type. Some pedigrees just have a larger proportion of these horses in them and true, they are getting diluted. TB Heritage site has a lot of interesting reading on the TB ancestors of todays jumping horses.
We have a couple of Buckpasser related broodmares that are the sweetest mares. Both very athletic and gorgeous movers…and both chestnut sabino/rabicano. We love them!
I have 3 Buckpasser mares. He’s pretty close in all of their pedigrees and two of them have him twice. Great movers, nice conformation, great temperaments. I always look twice at any horse with Buckpasser in his/her pedigree.
I agree that he is back in the pedigrees, but still seems to have some influence. There is definitely a look that seems to come down thru. Love them.
I have had a couple over the years. There was a great producing sire (for hunter types) in our area by Buckpasser, Pollinize. I don’t know how many of his get ended up as hunters, but I loved their type.
Cool was a grandson via Moneychanger. Beautiful, correct horse, short coupled, and uphill. Lovely canter, super athletic horse, great natural balance (never felt like the typical green worm). IIRC Buckpasser has been called the most correctly conformed TB or some such and Cool inherited the looks. However, I would not describe his disposition as lovely, but he was also a grandson of a full sister of Northern Dancer. He was also way too smart to be a horse and kept looking for ways to make it more interesting:lol:.
He was not happy over fences, but I switched over to dressage and showed thru 4th level and was working Intermediare-I-ish.
My (pregnant!) mare has Buckpasser top and bottom, and the stallion has him in the top, so …… I can’t wait!
