Tennessee Walking Horse Soring Issue *Update post 1*

I, too, commend Mr. Jackson “The Preacher” for his attitude and behavior. He, like me, realizes that: Forgiving someones doesn’t make what they did right… it releases you from the burden of bitterness.

Basically: bitterness / unforgiveness towards someone is like You drinking poison expecting them to die.

Yes, I think many of us learned a little life lesson today from this thread.

subk- Logical took the time to go thru the HPA violation list and seperate out the more current violations,

http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/24/us/tennessee-horse-abuse/index.html?hpt=hp_bn1

I like how they think it is ““I think it’s sad that a corporation like Pepsi would go out because of the action of one person and one training barn,” said Stephen Mullins of S.H.O.W.”

Would writing letters to the editors of various horse magazines be helpful? Most likely many of them will have some sort of statement about the Nightline piece and now would be a good time to provide some comments I would think. The more folks who send one, the more likely at least one or two would be printed.

I would think the best idea would be some sort of divide and conquer approach. We can list the magazines and several people can volunteer to write to each of them. Would that make sense?

Horse and Rider, Horse Illustrated, Equus, Practical Horseman, The Horse, Saddle and Bridle, John Lyon’s Perfect Horse, Horse Journal…who else?

What an excellent idea MKflower ! I love the way you think.

Another helpful thing would be for as many people as can to go open the pages on the Tennessean website that have this story. Like every newspaper it struggles with readership and if there is strong traffic on these stories it will give them incentive to continue coverage. They’ve been doing a good job on this story and they might at some point get some pressure not to–if the story increases readership it will be hard to ignore. Click on some advertisers on these pages too. They monitor all that traffic!

The Tennessean is the regional paper. In small Southern towns making the people involved in the industry toxic will be very helpful. Shame and what your neighbors think of you still means something here.

Yeah, what ako said… 50’s was the last we saw of the real TWH WGC. :sigh:

K to Subk>>>You either do, or do not, want to know, want to be involved, want to get to the bottom of it, or not. From your earlier post you are sick to death of TWHs and would rather not know, rather not be called, rather not be informed.<<<

I’ve been on this forum thread ever since it began and have read every post–wheww! It’s been quite a ride–a roller coaster, if you will, of different emotions each day: anger, disappointment, and–hope-- that something can be done this time… Even when you’re away from the forum you’re still thinking, processing, and evolving–trying to come up with ideas that may work.

Subk has come up with a way to possibly do something positive within his or her realm. I applaud anyone who can be actively involved.

So, let it be.

omg just saw a pic of Johnny Depp with a horse on Facebook. It is captioned :

“Did you know that Johnny Depp adopted Goldeneye, a one-eyed horse used in the filming of Legends of Sleepy Hollow ? Knowing the would be put down he chose to take Goldeneye and prove real men are kind to animals.”

Does anyone know him ? Would he come on board with the soring issue ? An interested celebrity would be most helpful ! He was born in Owensboro KY and may already be informed about Big Lick.

Does anyone know what William Shattner thinks?

we could contact every well known person, ask what they think, but when tire hits the road wht they think does not matter ITS WHAT THEY ARE WILLING TO DO THAT COUNTS.

So i guess the real QUESTION is what are YOU willing to do.if the horse folks (all breeds) are not ready to stand together on this abuse. than what.

contact your ag commissioner start someplace other than this board/thread. drive 100 miles like the preacher did be heard in your own way.

It’s funny you mentioned Johnny Depp WalkInTheWoods. I was going to ask about whether or not someone ‘famous’ would be willing to lend a voice to this. It’s amazing how many people sit up and take notice when it’s coming from Hollywood. How would we go about contacting someone?

Oprah own’s TWHs. Go for it.

hmm… I was looking at the walkerswest “ancestors” page and it looks earlier than that to me - the last ones on that page that look “normal” to me are from the 40s.
Bingo! Watch the video of the history a few pages back and the horses will tell you they started struggling when the heavy shoes went on.

I regret the time I spent watching the beautiful Saddlebreds I worked with shod with pads and weight (though not as exaggerated as the tWH) and, as I’ve said before, I like to see it all go away. JMHO

Anyone who spends time with these breeds will tell you how kind and forgiving they are.

And yeah, I have been accused of being a tree hugger too.

Common sense is becoming a rare commodity. If i had a horse whose chains passed inspection on the way into the ring and didnt pass on the way out, i would go ballistic and fight that. (will never have chains on my trail horse, but just sayin). Why not have a bucket of water there - dip, shake, blot, weigh, in case the chains got mysteriously heavy. Kind of a no-brainer - what am i missing ?
THANK YOU!!! I knew I couldn’t be the only person feeling like I must be missing something here. Then again, I haven shown horses in Tennessee…maybe things are more difficult down there in the whole logic department. I get that the DQPs are hired or chosen by the Association, right? Which also, sorry if I’m obtuse, but it sure seems like a GIGANTIC conflict of interest there. If the breed association was serious about doing this right, they would go with as impartial and third-party as possible for the DQPs. Not TWH trainers and clients of the trainers they’re supposed to be monitoring.

I’ve shown under FEI rules, so please don’t start bleating about fly spray and shampoos causing “false” positives. Did you know that peppermints will cause a positive test? Or that capsacin, the active ingredient in most shampoos to help dark horses stay dark, will also test positive and DQ you? Well guess what, they do. So WE DON’T GIVE PEPPERMINTS TO OUR HORSES before or at a show. Oh, the hardships, don’t EVEN get me started!

Mythilus tested positive for a trace amount of a drug that isn’t even sold in the US; incidentally, he had prior to the Games been treated in the vet clinic at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, where the Games were held…and where that drug is legal and obtainable. It’s most plausible that Myth picked up trace amounts of the drug, which enters the blood through the skin, there at the vet clinic.

I don’t remember Courtney King-Dye moaning about it too loudly. It happened, the FEI has a zero-tolerance policy, and the US lost their 4th place standing in the GP dressage. To my recollection, nobody cried foul or tried to say it was a false positive or a cheat.

ETA: I mean, if we’re going to be throwing out random occurrences, I figure we ought to get the details correct.

Mr. Shatner has never owned TWH’s.

He has only owned American Saddlebreds and has never approved of any abuse for them or any other animal.
I spoke with a representative from Harpo Productions, Chicago and she has never owned TWH’s.

She did own Morans after her first claim to fame and she does own and have a vested interest in Thoroughbreds.

The Preacher, as interesting as he appears to be, has a vested interest in the breed. He owns TWH’s.

Many of us work in other areas for our breeds.

With calls to support HSUS and other anti animal ownership groups regarding Big Lick soring issues, many of us are not prepared to sleep with that devil.

We do, however, voice our disapproval and concernn. Many of us also do not want the government to jump into passing bills (for votes or emotional reactions) so some of the suggests provided on this forum are not going to garner a lot of support

This is kind of going in a different direction for a moment, but does anyone know what that harness thing is that the horse is wearing over it’s stable sheet in the part of the video where the horse is writhing on the ground? I’d never seen something like that…and I mean that for both the cruelty and whatever that contraption is.
