Sometimes the door is locked because someone is in there too.
Just sayin’… excusing them for kickin in the door or otherwise having a tantrum because the door is locked is lame.
I agree there is no excuse to kick in a door If they did it
you don’t know about the faked report? really? That is the news story here. Its all over the press, even the lead on FB news at the right side.
you might think I don’t like you very much, but that is not true. This is just a message board. I am not mean. really. Its not personal or about you as a person. I’m commenting on the story and you keep making this about you.
I don’t understand you, but that is not the same.
Quit trying to bait me into an argument, ok? I don’t play that way. I’m moved on from that crap you and BTDT pulled. Lets keep these things on topic, I am and would appreciate you knocking off the victim stuff. I speak the same way to everyone, I promise. I am not singling you out. Don’t flatter yourself.
I am a very logical person, if that reads as mean than that is on you. I have zero emotion when I post. Its just a horse BB. Don’t let it be anything more.
Sorry for you, but believe it or not, this is a messageboard with real people behind it. If you look at it as something which is like a place with cyberpersons ok… But you are wrong and If I am not able to make you understand that, then hopefully somebody else will. You act exactly like you accuse Lochte and the other swimmers of… You dont care, because you dont know the people on this board. They probably didnt care because they were drunk and in a country which they would leave soon. So you have more in common with the swimmers then you would think

Being robbed at gunpoint makes them the victim of a crime.
But were they robbed or did they offer a bribe??? My vote is bribe.
Maybe perhaps when one is in a foreign country one should make some attempt to understand that country’s customs and not assume that what is in the US works in other places.
Again, assuming that just because there might be a court order in the US doesn’t mean that is how the Brazilian legal system works.
I would suggest that before visiting Singapore, one reads up on what is illegal there. And yes, there have been international “incidents” where foolhardy Americans have gone afoul of Singapore law.
IMO, these guys were drunk and obnoxious (I don’t care if they just won medals or not). They vandalized the gas station and committed public indecency. Security showed up and wanted a bribe which they got.
Then the swimmers lied about what happened… that’s the kicker.
Dorothy, we’re not in the US anymore…

This is arguing with personal opinion, not with facts…
Well they had their hands up…so looked like a robbery to me but frankly bribery or a robbery both are illegal.
And “trashed” the bathroom does not seem supported by the facts as reported by persons from news sites eager for a story who inspected the scene. Nothing to take a picture of but a slightly damaged sign.
I do not think anyone argues with the fact they were idiots.

There’s no reason to pull things off the wall either.
If the problem for them is that the door to the bathroom is locked… neither action will resolve that.
In fact, if I am in the loo and hear a ruckus outside the door [in a country known for problems] I might actually just sit tight in there longer.
The man is 32. If the excuse for his behavior is ‘he was drunk’ then he needs to stop drinking.

bathroom damage–no? Shows no signs of repair either.
Wow, I am so amazed by how many perfect people are on COTH! If only we could all be as perfect as COTHers are, since obviously they have never made a mistake, or lied, or been drunk before! I aspire to be as wonderful and perfect as all of you are!

If I would be in the loo of a gas station in a dangerous country in the very early morning I would be dying of fear anyhow, even if nobody tried to open the door. I personally try to avoid situations like this

what does this have to do with anything here? I’m not following? No one said people here are perfect.
these guys were idiots, there is no way around that. Entitled. Yes, that is my judgement based on what I read. They did it, so I will form an opinion. Should they not want opinions don’t make headlines AT THE OLYMPICS.
It’s that simple!
That has NOTHING to do with my choices, does it? Its not just what they did, its the snobbish way that they acted.
And right… not perfect, never said I was…but I have never been drunk or arrested and I don’t plan to be! I’m not perfect, but nor am I dumb or snobbish.
Sendenhorse, that wasn’t directed at you.
So no, I guess it had nothing to do with your choices??
I have been drunk but never disorderly and never lied to anyone when I made a mistake so?

actually yes it does relate —you just asked the general audience, so yes I am included in that, aren’t I?

Us “perfect” people have to hang together our we’ll be hung separately, eh?!?!?!
Everybody makes mistakes; admit them and usually it’s over. Lie about them and they generate 10 pages of comments.
And multiple, self-exonerating, self-serving TV interviews.
Sometimes folks who’ve erred are better off to not miss an opportunity to be quiet.
G.
So apparently someone on this thread thinks the appropriate way to deal with someone disagreeing with them is to send them threatening and vulgar messages over social media. That is not the appropriate way to express your feelings. I feel sad for you that you have such poor anger management skills that you feel the need to go back through my posts, figure out who I am and then take the time to send those messages. I hope you get help, whichever one of you it is. I really pity you.
It wasn’t a robbery.
Even Lochte admitted in his recent interview that the guards gave them the choice of paying for the damage or waiting for the police. The option wasn’t “give us your money or we will shoot you;” that would have been a robbery. The translator told them to pay for the damage/commotion or let the police sort it out.
It wasn’t a robbery.
A robbery would have left them without wallets, cell phones, credit cards and cash. The guards didn’t take any of that, and in fact, didn’t touch their wallets; the swimmers took out their cash and paid the guards. (Whether the money then went to the gas station owner is moot, although one could argue that if Lochte wanted to ensure that it was fairly distributed, he could have waited for the authorities to ensure he wasn’t being shaken down).
With the climate in Brazil being such that the authorities were being hyper vigilant about protecting athletes and tourists from crime, an innocent Lochte would have had nothing to lose with a police visit, and CHOSE NOT TO WAIT FOR THE POLICE. Clearly, he did not want the attention bringing to light their rowdy behavior.
Another way to look at the robbery argument is this: let’s say some drunk, rowdy guys are at a party next door and punch and destroy your lawn ornament, pee on your bushes and on your house and kick your car. You are understandably upset. You come out of your house with a shotgun and tell them to sit down on the curb and wait for the cops. You are mad. It is your valuable time and money which will be needed to hose the pee off the house (and there’s the ick factor), shop for and replace the damaged lawn ornament, and perhaps you believe that the car is dented (later inspection shows it is not). So you say, “Listen you jerks. You can pay me for my time to clean and replace stuff or I will call the cops. And while you’re at it, throw in an extra twenty dollars for making me mad. Oh, and don’t come back around here anymore.” They decide to pay.
It wasn’t a robbery.
I agree with Matt Lauer that it was a negotiation.
This is just my opinion about some of the details of the situation; I have said, and agree with others, that Lochte created the scandal when he subsequently lied on air, saying that guys with police badges stopped their taxi, made them exit, held a gun to his forehead, then robbed all of them.

??
How does one argue with ‘facts’? In this incidence, there are many facts not in evidence. Typically, “arguments” (or, IMO the preferred term, discussion) are around opinion, no?
In this country, bribery is illegal. Do we know for a fact it is illegal in Brazil?
And yes, in many countries in which bribery is illegal (even in the US), it still occurs… the trick is to not get caught.

We don’t know that bribery was involved.
We don’t know what really went on there that night. We probably never will. Ryan Lochte probably doesn’t really know either.
Sounds to me like he (or someone) threw a tantrum and cracked the poster, but for all we know the poster was already cracked. I haven’t seen footage of any one person hitting it.
I still don’t see a gun. I don’t see anyone who looks like a security guard. I see men in red shirts/jackets that look more like attendants than guards. I see three men who I assume are our swimmers walking out of the building, which doesn’t fit in with the story of them going behind the building. They were walking out of the building. I have seen no footage of them pulling up at the gas station or walking into it. I see them coming out and getting in to the car, then apparently getting back out of the car. No sitting on a curb, one puts his hands up, but not like he’s being held up, more like putting them up to say, “OK, whatever, I let go, take it easy, back off.”
USA today has done a more thorough review and is not so sure it was not robbery or that afalse report was filed… They have also conferred w a judge and brazilian lawyers. Seems like swimmers did not go near bathroom and did have guns pulled on them.An English speaking witness that translated also was interviewed who got involved when guns pulled out at swimmers.
Hah!!! I knew it :). So easy to do a witch hunt :(. And so sad when damage is done, which isn’t even justified…
And another thing whatever the swimmers did or say when they paid the money, it’s void. They were drunk and there is no way you can make any legal agreement with a person which is drunk. I’m sure not even in Brasil. It was robbery!!!
