Thanks a lot guys, now I’ve been getting nothing done as I read all this and roll around in fits of laughter at the sheer hysterical stupidity of these people.
I have to say though, I don’t understand the special kind of crazy that California Chrome seems to spark. I don’t live far from Harris Farms and obviously there was a lot of media hype surrounding him before the Kentucky Derby last year. After he won, but before the Preakness, we had one of these CC zealots show up at the barn I was boarding at.
She apparently marched herself right down to Harris Farms and I think they saw her coming a mile away. She came away the proud owner of gasp California Chrome’s half-sister. Which, of course, means nothing more than that she was another horse sired by Lucky Pulpit. And never had I seen a scrawnier, sadder nag than that little thing! She was runty and brown without much white, so just about the opposite of CC, but boy was that lady tickled pink! It didn’t matter to her that she was skinny and dull or that she had a huge, nasty scar. It didn’t even matter that she had a pretty severe club foot. She was California Chrome’s half-sister by golly and she wanted everyone to know.
The BO asked about the horse when she brought her and, when she found out it was a two year old Thoroughbred filly, wanted to know if she was broke. Of course! was the answer. English and Western! Hmm.
For a while the weirdo- hem, lady- would come out when no one was around and just be odd with the horse, according to the barn hands. You know, leading her around, staring soulfully at her, typical rainbow farting nonsense stuff. Then one evening she apparently got the courage to saddle her up and get on her in the round pen. The filly promptly exploded and bucked her off. Because she wasn’t broke.
Cue terror of said filly and sudden cessation of activities with her. We’re not sure but we think she was one of those “I have a spechul connection with horsie and therefore everything will be fine” sorts. Being thrown obviously knocked some semblance of sense into her though because she approached several people about breaking the filly. One was an actual trainer and said sure, but she wasn’t willing to pay his fee. The other was just a lady that plays trainer (bunch of lunatics at that barn, which is why I left) and told her he-- no.
After the poor horse did a lot of sitting around someone from another barn came and loaded her up, hopefully to sell or at least to start her under saddle. The weirdo owner went bustling around trying to take a bunch of other people’s stuff right before she left. Strange from start to finish.
So as someone who lives in the area I really hope they don’t send him back to Harris Farms. I’ve seen more than enough of it firsthand, though it’s funny to read about it online. I don’t think they would send him back to HF, all things considered.
