The Daily Dumb

That’s hysterical.

Contributing to this thread because my husband doesn’t get me ranting about a local breeder.

Recently have sent a lot of ads on FB from the same facility with very… interesting horse for sale and some for stud. It seems that this breeder does not geld any of her colts (has a least 3 breeding stallions and numerous weanling to 3 year old intact colts for sale). The ads consistent of very short TikTok videos with the horses in their paddocks or occasionally on lead with a lot of zooming in on their hair or unique markings. The crosses they are breeding are not my cup of tea (think appy, gypsy cob crosses usually)

They recently have had a teenager (16 year old) helping them advertise, and she actually posted the price range. Low five figures for these babies :woman_facepalming:t2:.

I think I wouldn’t be so bothered if the horses were out there doing things or if it seemed anything but color and hair was the motivating factor for breeding them. Probably just going to block them for my mental sanity

I know someone whose vet told them their Shetland needed to diet & get a lot more exercise. A friend of hers was training for a marathon & made him her running buddy :joy:

Preface: There are 4 tack rooms at the barn. One on the south side, two on the north side, and one in the breezeway.

My farrier is at the farm, is underneath my horse. I’m holding for him.

Lady: “Excuse me! Excuse me sir!!” from the arena, leaning over the fence.
Farrier: Slowly looks up from actively putting a shoe on, with nails in his mouth…
Lady: “Can you turn off the tack room lights?”

I step in.

Me: “The ones in your tack room?”
Lady: “Yes.”
Me: “That you turned on a minute ago?”
Lady: dirty look

Seriously? She wanted my farrier to get out from underneath a horse to shut off some lights?? That she turned on? Because she didn’t want to tie her horse quick to shut them off? And, barring that, she wanted me, who was actively holding a horse for said farrier, to do the same? What?? The tack room was closer to her than it was to us!!

What in gods great earth is wrong with people…

Meanwhile, her husband (now a pro trainer, after watching some Parelli videos) is girthing his horse so tight he’s going up on his tiptoes as he pulls the latigo - and not slowly, just abruptly ripping on the latigo strap. I couldn’t watch, poor horse.

Hunter pony went off. Ground has been awful + I find out she apparently has a tendency to become agitated if her paddock buddy leaves to ride. Fine. Sh-t happens. Had front shoes put on.

All was well for a couple weeks. Then I notice a mild head bob going on while daughter is schooling pony. Ok. Ground has been hard the past few days, we’ll keep an eye on her. Next day, I happen to be the one to pick her feet while daughter runs out to the car for different boots. Notice a bruise on the sole of one of pony’s back feet. Ask BO, who happens to be a research/lab DVM, what they think. BO kindly hoof tests bruise. Pony reacts sharply. Next week is a waiting game as I consult trainer (who is out of town) put pony on Bute, and treat with ice soaks, etc. Decide pony needs back shoes. Farrier, who I’m not allowed to talk to directly for some reason, can’t make it out until one week hence (today). Trainer texts this afternoon, stating farrier says pony’s feet look good, jogged sound, etc. Recommends against back shoes. And that “red color means the bruise is old.” Implication is that I don’t know what I’m talking about.

OK. Fine. Never mind that an equine DVM concurred it was an active bruise. Maybe guidance has changed since I last saw a hoof bruise? Google images. First page is full of pics of bruises that look exactly like the pony’s on farrier educational sites & message boards. “Hoof bruises are red, pink, or purple…” There’s one article about ice pack bruises, in which the farrier states that in his experience, such bruising shows up around 3 months later & seems not to bother the horse. I can see the difference in the photo of an ice pack bruise accompanying the article. This is not what the pony has going on. The pony’s bruise looks like a textbook perfect recent bruise.

So, one of us is the dumb one today. Could be me, or could be the farrier. I’m thinking it’s the farrier. :expressionless:

Idk if this counts as a dumb as much as ranting about my mother, so I’ll take it down if needed but:
Background info: Private barn, shared with my parents. 7 1/2 of the horses are theirs, 1 1/2 mine (I’ll get that other half when they retire my brother’s mare from polo), 2 of the 7 are retired polo ponies both in their early 30s and late 20s or early 30s

The 33 year old looks great for his age and lack of teeth, and still enjoys occasional rides (This is Rex, the APHA for anyone who finds other stories/looks at my profile)

his girlfriend on the other hand… She’s ~28-30, a TB with no teeth, an absorption problem in her gut, arthritis and a bunch of scar tissue in her left hind from impaling herself with a stick. She has a body score of AT BEST 3, more like 2-2.5 on the 1-9 scale.

Its not that my mom is starving her, in fact this horse sits in front of a muck bucket full of soaked alfalfa all day, itsthe fact that my mom THINKS THIS HORSE LOOKS GOOD. AND RIDES HER. BAREBACK. AND TRIES TO GET OTHER PEOPLE TO RIDE HER.

The vet was out the other day (The vet that has helped this horse fight everything from maple leaf poisoning as a 14 year old, to the stick in her leg only a few years ago). He was PISSED when mom said the mare looks good and said she rode her.

Im trying to find how to report her for this, but I doubt they’ll take it seriously considering every other horse here is in (actual) near perfect condition, if not a little too conditioned, even the 33 year old only drops to a score of 4 in the winter.

If this doesnt start a flame war, I’ll post pics (Feel free to roast my mother, she was like this with us as kids too (The blind to issues thing) so its not just “I dont want to admit this horse is dying” )

@Polopony20 why did the vet not say something to her when they were there last time?

She might actually believe the vet.

He did, she doesnt.

Did this when Evil Burrito got gelded and he would NOT lunge

Omg, people! Through a random post asking advice on a FB group for riding instructors, I believe I’ve stumbled across a half or possibly full sister of the Go Go Pony!! And she’s for sale at a great price. She’s very green despite being roughly the same age but does have the same nice way of going. The owners are mostly western riders & don’t jump but think she looks like she could be a good pony jumper.

Casually thinking about this… Someone else go get her, please! Adding a 3rd horse would really put me in the dumb jail :grimacing:

Did you really think we were going to tell you No, please be sane, save your money?
You know better…

Buy the pony. You know you want to. It’s just money. Go ahead. Do it. (All said in insidious little whisper)

@TheDBYC, you can’t possibly think we’re going to say anything other than “Get the pony (and post pictures)!”, can you?

Omg!:rofl: We shall see. Sent a pic to my trainer asking who it reminded her of:
“She’s so cute! Wish we could go & get her.”

" Well, maybe we can. She’s priced in the lowest of 4 figures…"

Trainer is excited but being all logical – which I do love about her! – assessing what little video they had of her & the odds of resale. Plus finding a pro that would fit on her. (Trainer has gotten on the Go Go Pony for a quick demo but is realistically too tall to do real training rides on them) And lord knows we don’t want me trying to put nuances on a horse that is green w/t :flushed:

So, we shall see. In the meantime, if anyone is interested…pm me & I’ll hook you up with the pony + owner…

Just. Get. The. Pony.

And then post pictures.

I gotta be able to resell our resale projects, though. Unless I want to end up with an army of freakishly athletic, sub 14hh pony jumpers/eventers.

Though, is that really a bad thing? Asking for a friend, of course.

Eta: Part of me is really curious about what this breeder was trying to do. Clone Teddy O’Connor? The other part is wondering if I should try the same; this Arabian/Welsh X seems to be a potent one. Imagine a full sized horse show jumper, but small enough to maneuver with perfect balance through the tightest spots. You’ve got the Go Go Pony!

If I were short enough to ride ponies, I’d ask to hire on with you.

Yes, in the Land of Ponies, the Welsh x Arab is popular for producing athletic, versatile animals. There is strong demand for competitive ponies in SJ, dressage, PC etc.

You know you want that pony.
