I understand that. But we have a guy pontificating, not actual proof they have a medical issue, and again, LE prob wont or cant do anything.
I suppose I would rather stand up for the horse than tiptoe around another boarder’s idiocy.
I agree with that completely!!
It gets hard because:
I don’t think the horses are foundering. The one just got a trim by a fly-by-night farrier, and the other is only lame on one front leg. For that, what they’re doing with the horses is probably not causing any additional harm.
That said, if the TRAINER thinks they’re foundering, then to not tell his clients the proper care for that ailment is hilarious and frustrating at the same time. It just shows how little he knows.
You might want to print this or something similar out, and just leave a copy or 2 lying around the tackroom…
This guy sounds like he is related to a trainer that took over the nice barn I boarded at. The one who could be heard screaming at her students and their parents that all the vets and the other trainers were liars (except her and her farrier and vet - both of who were widely known as crackpots)and all the books and magazines were full of lies. Oy.
I put my horses out on the “pasture” (note, it’s not really a pasture, it’s maybe .5 acre and the grass is 1" high) for 2 hours last night while they were there just so they would try and tell me that they’re going to founder. I just laughed and walked away.
Crazy lady with the horses in the arena was at it again last night. She was seconds away from turning her horses out with me tacking up (I had those awesome headphones in, and I heard her ask everyone except me if they were going to ride), and I walked down and didn’t bother going across the arena - I just hollered “hey, I’m going to ride”. She was SO mad, but didn’t dare act like a turkey about it because the barn owner was right there.
The BO told me later that she told him about our little incident - she started it with “She’s younger than me, and I’m her elder…” LOL lady please. I’ve boarded here for 20+ years now, I don’t need to hear the elder talk. I showed the BO what I did, showed him where I walked to (all the way across the barn so I didn’t have to yell) and told him that I said what I always say, since I have a “script” for when there’s horses out and I want to ride. He’s totally with me now, and straight told me “don’t let her push you around, expect that she follows the rules, just pretend like you don’t hear her if she mouths off and let me know after.”
I can do that. Deal.
There was drama last night over the arrival of a $1000+ tack trunk large enough to stash a body in. Maybe there is a body in it & that was what tipped things over the edge. I just try to smile & nod while simultaneously backing into the bushes a la Sean Spicer.
Do I hear a tinge of regret that it is not her body?
Your last sentence made me think of the Penguins of Madagascar “just smile and wave boys - smile and wave.”
Fairly sure the barn owner kind of wishes it was
From a local FB equine group: I’ll go gentle on this one because the perpetrators are obviously not horse people. Guy advertising board on their 6 acre parcel. Boarder must: be willing to help with fencing in the property (financially & physically); repair/renovate their apparent death trap of a barn should they choose to use it; willing to let their (from the looks of it) tiny children help with chores occasionally & even “teach about about equestrian”; and sign liability & carry insurance. Please send DM introducing yourself & horses & qualifications for turning their (apparent hellhole) into a safe place to board. Because it isn obvious he really, really doesn’t know how to do so. In exchange, “boarding could be free for a determined time.” Responses were mainly along the lines of that Leonardo Di Caprio maniacal laughing meme. Someone mentioned that the lowest quote they received recently for board fencing was $5000 for 150 linear feet. Another pointed out that she would fully expect to take said fencing with her when moving out. Poster must’ve pulled ad down as I could.no longer find the ad when I was all set to read the comments as entertainment at lunch.
“Board horses, they said. It’ll be fun and lucrative, they said!” Poor souls.
Clients flip horse arrived. The horse is huge, young, 30 days of training from a cowboy and lame. The horse is sweet and easy to handle but is lame. From what I was told, the horse was purchased without a PPE. For far more money than I, my boss or anyone else would pay for a lame, barely broke horse.
At first the client hoped the horse had a short trim, than moved to abscess, and now…I’m not sure. A vet was called and after the client took off quickly. Hopefully it was not bad news, however I don’t think so.
Oh dear, sad.
There is a newbie at my barn, green OTTB with green rider, no trainer. Horse was moved here because the last barn was so bad that horse’s fetlock fell off and no-one noticed. Not the shoe, the fetlock. Umm- hoof appears attached to leg in usual way now, I guess her vet must have performed a miracle
I had a friend, non-horsey, that was thinking about buying land and having some boarders to keep their horses there to make some money. She, thankfully, asked me what all it would entail and quickly decided it wasn’t a good idea. A lot of people have NO idea what keeping a horse on the property requires.
Errr… was it the chestnut that fell off? Heaven forbid if that was the case! Sue for damages, LOL.
Trying to think of other things that can fall off…
Me too! I was trying not to giggle (masks have their uses) so wasn’t able to ask more questions. Was it a piece of tack? was it a bell boot? It must have been a health related issue as the vet was involved, tho.
Nope! And really, can you blame them? Horses are weird animals, lol. An ex of mine got it in his head that I should board horses at my old farm. “Oh, hell no!” was my reply. Then he decided he maybe could do it on a piece of raw land he was considering purchasing.
Him: “How much money could I make if…”
Me: “Nothing. You’ll lose thousands the first year trying to develop a piece of raw land for horse boarding.”
We were having dinner in a pub in my town, so people at neighboring tables were nodding in agreement with me.
I’m throwing myself into Daily Dumb jail tonight. Daughter (who is supposed to be, you know, at home doing distance learning), texts me links to an ad for a pony. Because this happens about 50 times a week I don’t think much of it. But then: “Look at this pony jumper! I love her! They want her to go to Pony Finals for jumpers.!” I watch the videos & truly, this little mare is impressive. She’s game. She’s aggressive. She’s apparently never met a distance she didn’t like. She’s bouncing over 10 element bounces & looking disappointed when they run out of stuff to jump. She’s got that rare brand of insane, cat-like athleticism that you see in GP jumper mares. The kind that want to win so bad they’ll twist their hind end out to the side in mid-air instead of bumping a rail. She’s…really cheap to lease because the market for small large ponies that self-identify as 17.2hh Dutch WB competing at 1.65m is basically nonexistent but for us & maybe 3 other crazy people.
“She’s, uh, really incredible. That’s A LOT of horse, honey.”
“I love her! They say they’d like her to go to Pony Finals for the jumpers, too!”
“She’s very, uh, jumpery. Are you sure you’ll like that? You see how strong she is into the fences? When [out of practice lease hunter pony] was doing that the other week you said it wasn’t fun. And she’s so athletic that you’d probably get bounced out of the tack a few times until you learned to go with it. She’s not mean or anything. She’s just able to attempt things that most horses wouldn’t dream of attempting.”
“I never said that! When did I say that??”
“We’d have to use a different coach for her if we got her. [Hunter trainer] just isn’t into that kind of thing.”
“Well, how much is it to board at [your coach’s]? She could help me with her!” (That is true. She’s an eventer & into this kind of thing.)
My inner monologue: “Hmmmm. Kiddo will never have enough time to ride 2 ponies at 2 separate barns 5x a week. That means… I’D GET TO RIDE THE PONY!!”
Someone please smack me. I haven’t jumped in a while. I should get something large enough to step over the fences. I don’t really even like ponies. But this one is cool! And if I fell, the ground isn’t that far away So maybe I do want a jumping pony?
