I’m throwing myself into Daily Dumb jail tonight. Daughter (who is supposed to be, you know, at home doing distance learning), texts me links to an ad for a pony. Because this happens about 50 times a week I don’t think much of it. But then: “Look at this pony jumper! I love her! They want her to go to Pony Finals for jumpers.!” I watch the videos & truly, this little mare is impressive. She’s game. She’s aggressive. She’s apparently never met a distance she didn’t like. She’s bouncing over 10 element bounces & looking disappointed when they run out of stuff to jump. She’s got that rare brand of insane, cat-like athleticism that you see in GP jumper mares. The kind that want to win so bad they’ll twist their hind end out to the side in mid-air instead of bumping a rail. She’s…really cheap to lease because the market for small large ponies that self-identify as 17.2hh Dutch WB competing at 1.65m is basically nonexistent but for us & maybe 3 other crazy people.

“She’s, uh, really incredible. That’s A LOT of horse, honey.”
“I love her! They say they’d like her to go to Pony Finals for the jumpers, too!”
“She’s very, uh, jumpery. Are you sure you’ll like that? You see how strong she is into the fences? When [out of practice lease hunter pony] was doing that the other week you said it wasn’t fun. And she’s so athletic that you’d probably get bounced out of the tack a few times until you learned to go with it. She’s not mean or anything. She’s just able to attempt things that most horses wouldn’t dream of attempting.”
“I never said that! When did I say that??”
“We’d have to use a different coach for her if we got her. [Hunter trainer] just isn’t into that kind of thing.”
“Well, how much is it to board at [your coach’s]? She could help me with her!” (That is true. She’s an eventer & into this kind of thing.)
My inner monologue: “Hmmmm. Kiddo will never have enough time to ride 2 ponies at 2 separate barns 5x a week. That means… I’D GET TO RIDE THE PONY!!”

Someone please smack me. I haven’t jumped in a while. I should get something large enough to step over the fences. I don’t really even like ponies. But this one is cool! And if I fell, the ground isn’t that far away So maybe I do want a jumping pony?

Aaargh, yes it’s a lease. That part is easy. It’s the another $900 a month in board that makes me Doable if I landed a couple big accounts at work this month.

Still, I’ll talk to my trainer & the pony owner. She is a really fun looking mare!

Hello I got the pony two years ago, don’t regret it at bit!!! Not as forward or catlike, more angry-slow like a rabid panda type, but adorable.

Get the pony! I didn’t like ponies until I got my WelshX! Ponies are great because as an adult they’re small enough where any fall isn’t too bad but the talented ones are super fun to shoot around a course with!! I would 100% buy another pony in a heartbeat

So the nice new lady at our barn is going to be a barrel of fun. The same horse who lost the fetlock colicced for EIGHT DAYS STRAIGHT last year.! Vet was involved, said was impacted, recommended bloat-eze so mare gets one of those little bottles 3 times daily “just in case her intestines flip”. Do people really not read or try to understand horse health? Owner seems reasonably intelligent…

Trying to gently guide one of the trainer’s minions into looking into navicular instead of founder, as her little mare is clearly sore but from what who knows…

Here’s the capper, I just remembered this part. About a year ago, I found out from someone else that she came back from a ride and forgot to unload her horse. She found him dead, in her trailer SIX DAYS later! She left him in there, no food, no water for six days.

Do people really not read or try to understand horse health?

Well, the Bloat Eze is mint-flavored, so I doubt the horse objects.
Seems like overkill, but also Can’t Hurt Might Help therapy.
It is possible horse had minor gassy impaction for those 8 days & the “flipped intestines” aka Feedbag Torsion resulting can be deadly, so HO may be erring on the side of safety.
Treating for gas impaction can’t hurt, unless horse becomes dehydated from side-effect diarrhea.

Heard back from the owner briefly. She has the pony with her out of town at a multi-day show. If pony doesn’t lease out while down there, my trainer is 100% on board to go look at her when they return. No updates yet.

But never fear! Daughter has decided to work towards Pony Finals jumpers instead of hunters. So, there will be a pony jumper. And because I’m 45, and, as my younger child puts it, “Mom, you look like a 12yo,” I’m really buying it for me
