The Daily Dumb

Sigh…
I might have to do this :unamused:
Latest News:
*Bus driver is “still congested”, still driving the bus :persevere:
*Head Sister called to ask if I wanted to have Thanksgiving dinner at her house.
Her symptoms (congestion, diarrhea) still present. Other guests will be Busdriver, gal who was Patient #1 & boarder who had COVID last year & tested negative using a home test.
NTYVM
Told her I am not comfortable being in the house with them yet.

But, as the Club party is a bit more than a week away (not the CDC recommended 10 days IF no symptoms) I expect they will show up.

Not a dumb, just don’t know where else to put it.

Doing some training rides on a horse, owner is out of town.

Holy crap that rider must NAG NAG NAG. I don’t nag. Horse picked it up really fast that I ask once and then follow up.

Do people enjoy pedaling their horses? JFC.

I am the daily dumb. Like really dumb.

My husband wanted to go for a ride yesterday (rare). So I opened all the gates so we could walk the whole property/pastures etc.

After my ride I turned my mare back out.

3am I wake up to my gelding whinneying. Thought process goes like this… "oh silly gelding, mare is just at the bottom of her field… oh wait I didn’t close that gate! Thats ok she is just in the other field… I didn’t close that gate either! And we went out last night so the driveway gate was open… WTFFF complete panic.

I went out to the barn to get a halter, and from somewhere in the pitch black yard my mare pops out and follows me into the barn. So relieved.

I have literally NEVER done anything that dumb with horses ever. Thank God she decided to be rational and not leave the property. Yikes :see_no_evil:

It happens to everyone at least once. We all try so hard to never leave any gate open, but there is always that day that you forget that one gate.

@2DogsFarm, saw a post on a community FB page. Poster had Covid, her half dozen kids are with their grandparents. Did anyone know where she might be able to get a fully prepared Tgiving dinner short notice as so to make it easier on the grandparents. Oh, poor thing, but how sweet of her to be trying to help when she doesn’t feel well. Click through her profile to see that she’s also been all over creation in the past week with a traveling sports team the oldest kids belong to. :expressionless:

@ClassyJumper, I think leaving a gate open once in a blue moon is just an inevitable part of farm life. That and running the well dry because you left the hose running to fill troughs. I once arrived home from work at 10pm on a bitter cold polar vortex night. Drank hot tea, suited up in my Carhardts & started out towards the cow field with 2 five-gallon buckets full of hot water to de ice their trough. Saw cow patty on wrong side of fence. Cows were in field where they were supposed to be. Heart skipped a beat as it registered “Holy crap! The LONGHORN BULL is loose!!”

Frantically search for grey-black bull in the dark. Finally located him standing by the front porch, patiently waiting for me to rescue him. He’d apparently annoyed the cows to the point they shoved him out through the hotwire fence. :joy: Fortunately, he was relatively young & apparently shyer than I’d thought him to be & had meekly watched me walk in & out of the house past him. Took a shot of vodka for me to calm down after that :scream::scream:

Short Answer: Yup
Wayback When, I took a clinic with a Geman gal - Annike ??(worked for both Theodorescus) & she had us work on leg yield off the long wall.
For MONTHS after the clinic one gal did nothing but leg yield down that wall.
Horse only got a break at the short end, then back to The Drill…

I can’t believe I had to say this tonight:

Uhh, you cant lunge your horse “at liberty” while I’m riding.

But she won’t go anywh…

No. She has to have a rope on if you’re going to lunge.

Mind you this is a horse the woman can not ride because she is so reactive and edgy. I’ve seen the “at liberty” work while it was just her and… no. Flat out, no.

I also had to be the villain last night to the same woman. No, you can not lunge your horse while there are three people already riding in the 60×110 arena. You must wait for at least one of them to be finished.

You’d have thought I kicked her dog…

Well, I mean if she used just one end and everyone else could cut across… but still, no.

She was livid. Mind you, she did not even ask “does anyone mind if I lunge”, so I had to jump in and say “hey with three of us riding there’s no room for you to lunge, you’re going to have to wait until at least one of us is finished.”

We have a large group of people at the barn that believe you must lunge before getting on, every time. This is due to TrainerMan’s teachings.

At no yard I’ve ever been at has lunging been allowed in an arena where people were riding. At my current yard there is no lunging allowed in ANY arena other than the dedicated lunge ring, which is a true blessing.

I wish. That and no turnout.

Not a daily dumb (well maybe) but definitely a proud mama brag. Had finished riding my horse and was cleaning his feet before I left the indoor. (This indoor has very nice footing and cleaning hooves before leaving is a rule.) Another boarder is long lining her very large horse. Said horse spooks and starts coming backwards at us while I am “under” my horse working on a hind foot. I hear the commotion and get out from under immediately. My saint of a horse did not move until he knew I was out of his way. He may not be fancy but there’s a reason I own this horse.

Not that it works perfectly, but current barn has mats, a broom, and a hoof pick just outside the arena entrance, so you can pick out the hooves and sweep the footing back into the arena.

This is a great tip!

My boy has massive hooves and I always feel guilty when he tracks the arena footing in the aisle on the way out. I do try to always go back down to sweep it but have been known to forget. I’m in the outside barn and get distracted easily.

Trainer doesn’t say anything and doesn’t have this as a rule but I know it is the right thing to do. So I’m the Daily Dumb for not thinking of it!

Yes, two barns I’ve ridden at have this rule. One barn is not really enforced but the other one is. There are multiple hoofpicks hanging on the wall so no excuse not to.

Yes, my new barn has this rule. It’s slightly modified for us older ladies with bad backs, we only have to pick front feet

I’m in South Africa, not sure if location provides context. People tend to be super fussy about footing here, and our large jumping arena gets raked every day, some days twice a day if it’s a heavy lesson day. Dressage arena gets less use so it’s watered and raked every second/third day.

The biggest partof the lunging ban is to protect the arena’s base layer, but I love not having to deal with crazy/playing horses while I’m riding.

Yay! What a nice “brag” – your horse deserves for you to be proud of him.

That said, I’m surprised that a barn that cares enough to have very nice footing does not care enough to not allow hoof-cleaning in the arena. Like your near-situation today, that sounds risky to me, much more so than allowing lunging in riding arenas (which is also a terrible idea IMO).
