The Daily Dumb

A good one from Trainer Man the other day.

Him: “what color would you call your mare?”
Me: “Bay.”
Him: “hmm… that’s not what I would call it.”
Me: “… but that’s what she is. She’s bay.”

Wait. Please tell me you asked him what color he would call her? I am dying to know.

I did not. I try my hardest to terminate conversations with him as soon as possible.

Darn, that would be so fun to know. I mean…bay is…well…bay.

He sounds like the TB racehorse people: “Dk b/br”.

Unless you’re talking about a TB racehorse lol.
I was trying to decide from her pics if she was bay or seal brown. Whatever, she’s lovely.

@Rackonteur

Seal brown is spelled B-A-Y because that’s what it is. It’s bay. There is no reliable way to test for bay versus “seal brown” which gives the mealy look to the flanks and the muzzle.

At any rate… my most recent full body picture of Shayney, at a clinic laughing at her sedated state.

She’s bay. Not fancy bay. Not blood bay. Not seal brown. Not unicorn purple. Not warthog chartreuse.

She’s bay. Plain old bay. Like her mom and like her dad. Maybe you could say dark bay? But still… bay.

She looks bay to me.

I love them when they are sedated. I can hug all I want and they can do nothing about it but deal with being hugged and snuggled.

I want a warthog chartreuse horse!! What colour is chartreuse anyway?? Lol

Green. My mom once had a bay mare that would bleach out almost chartreuse in the summer. Blech…

Today’s dumb was discovering one of our barn cats at least 20 ft up in a pine tree. This little kitty follows me around while I work and I haven’t seen her around for a couple of days. Yesterday I thought I heard a cat meowing and a weird spot but I couldn’t pinpoint the noise.

This morning a bunch of horses are telling me there’s something really interesting in the fence line and I hear a cat meowing again. I’ve of course meow back and the cat meows again. I start following the very frantic meowing and discover her up the tree.

After placing a 10-ft ladder and realizing she was way higher than that, we ended up leaving a can of cat food at the top and kept checking on her throughout the day to see if she would figure her way down. Somehow my boss managed to get the cat out of the tree while I was on the bush hog.

Fortunately Barn cat is no worse for wear other than being horse from screaming at us. I think she was up that tree for at least 24 hours. She was very affectionate (normally demands love for a minute or two and then tries to take your hand off) to everyone.

Hopefully the barn kitty doesn’t decide to climb a tree again. Or go into the tree line. Maybe she’ll stay at home.

Bay has, by definition, black points. I do not think a seal brown horse does…??

Fairly sure there is a test for bay versus any shade of brown, seal or otherwise.

Just based on your picture, I’d be hard pressed to say brown v bay. But “seal brown” isn’t a choice I’d pick either :woman_shrugging:

I have people insist my Haflinger is a palomino. It does not matter how hard I try to explain that this is not an option in this breed, they are sure they are right.

I could be wrong, but I don’t believe so. It’s not clear what causes the brown pangare of the seal brown.

There is some genetic trending of “light bay” versus “dark bay” but it’s not 100%.

“Seal brown” horses have black points. The difference is the tan looking pangare.

Maybe @JB can answer?

@horseshorseshorseshorses Our kitty got locked in the LQ for 3 days. Poor little thing. She was in the upper bunk scratching at the window when I was out doing something in the bay next to the trailer. I heard this frantic meowing and was looking around, look up and see her little face. I thought a coyote had gotten her. The inside of the trailer was not pleasant after 3 days of no litter box.

Poor kitty and poor trailer.

Our barn had a barn kitty that was famous for going for “vacations” because she would climb into trailers. I know she went to at least two other barns with the farrier and I think 3 horse shows.

I had a stowaway kitty at a show last year. I opened the tack room door and there she was. She belonged to the barn where I was boarding. I was going to be there all day and didn’t want her to get lost but luckily the barn manager was there with her horse and trailer and took her home since she was leaving early.
