Just stunning. Wow!
I think two is fun, but I did have the reins handed back to me a few times when I let other people try it.
When I see big hitches like that, I feel like such a sissy for stressing over getting one horse show-ready.
My young mare coliced tonight, caught it pretty much immediately.
Was a weird one… I had finished riding her, a pleasant ride where she was focused and quite nice. Cooled her out well, as always. Bring her in to untack her, she won’t drop the bit. Weird. I get it out. Then, I’m continuing to untack and she just starts profusely sweating - it’s a cool evening here, so that’s abnormal. Her tail isn’t wringing but is going side to side non stop. I offer her a treat and she turns it down. Scrrreeeeecchhhh. This is a food OBSESSED horse. Red flag red flag. Put her out in the arena and she’s rolling (not thrashy, but up down up down) and lying down feeling not great.
Got ahold of the vet, gave her some banamine, and took her for a few laps around the barn in the nice cool evening breeze. 20 minutes and her “pain face” was 60% better, 40 minutes and she was subdued but otherwise fine. Ate her mash and was at her hay net when I left.
Whew, glad I was there to catch it right away. Here she is feeling sorry for herself while I was chatting with the vet.
The work getting a pair ready seems at least triple getting a single ready, I don’t know why.
Those big hitches have a crew to get everything clean and polished. There’s no way one or two people could do it so don’t feel bad.
Also, all that is $$$$$$. The coaches can start at around $100k and that doesn’t include the harness or horses or the (semi)trailer to haul everything.
Scary and good thing you caught it right away. Hope she continues to feel better.
Glad your mare worked that out herself!
They do know how to make us
Friends’ 20yo pony coliced last Monday.
She called me looking for a vet (her horse is boarded in IL, that vet isn’t licensed in IN).
She didn’t have banamine, so I ran over a dose.
Had to guesstimate 3cc, my mini gets 2 & pony is a medium.
By the time I got there she’d confirmed with her vet that my guess was good. Dosed him orally.
Pony was doing just what you described, wanting to go down, then up, then down…
Banamine helped, and I left another dose drawn up for them, but they ended up getting an IN vet out at 8P. Who oiled him, but recommended a trip to Purdue.
He had surgery Tuesday (so not emergent) & came home yesterday.
@Christa_P Every year I go with my Faux Grandson to Indy to see the 8s - Belgians & Percherons.
We’ve also gone to MEC in Shipshewana for Classic Six.
They had 15 entries one year & ALL drove in for awards presentation.
In was orderly, but they weren’t in order & left as prizes were presented.
Imagine 90 Drafts to wagons, maneuvering out of the arena, 6 at a time
I timed it & Out took 15min
The lineup:
Spud had a colic episode about 2 weeks ago. Of course it had to be on a weekend and after hours. He wasn’t in terrible straits, just looking at his sides and shifting his weight, not eating, looking very woebegone. He pawed a few times like he was going to lay down, in fact, that’s how I knew he was colicky, he was laying down in the pasture on a rainy afternoon, out in the wet and not under the shelter. Chatted with the vet a couple of times, she was a couple of hours out treating another customer so advised the banamine which, luckily, I had on hand. Gave him a few ccs, not really sure, he’s a big guy. About 1/2 hour later he was feeling better and started eating his pellet soup as I waited for some poop to appear. He dug into his hay after his gruel and by morning, there were several poop piles strewn about and he was looking for breakfast.
That was the second time in as many weeks that I avoided a costly vet visit by the horse just sorting himself out.
New Addition to The Dumb
Former friend who relocated South & does not communicate w/me.
I’m kept in touch via her DH to a mutual friend.
Her barn help found a kitten & brought it to her place.
8wk tiny who she decided needed to be wormed.
Okay, maybe, but without knowing what type of parasite Ms Frontier DVM {sarcasm } gives it “a thimbleful” of something she gives her horses.
Um, possibly okay if you see tape segments, then praziquantel is same med for both.
BUT dosage???
Re: above, she guessed wrong. Her thimbleful sent kitten to Emergency Vet.
DH took kitten as Herself had “lessons” to teach - quotes because she is in no way qualified to teach anything beyond Up/Down beginners & even those are questionable.
$200 later, vet wants to keep kitten overnight.
DH calls Stop & TG, vet says they will keep & place kitten in a responsible home.
WhutTheEfff!
Huge high fives to the vet though. Glad the kitten will have a soft landing.
Pony boy got to show at KHP over the weekend. Pony boy got to be at a large venue for the first time since the track. Pony boy encountered 6 in hand (and carts in general) for the first time. Pony boy lost his mind for a while. Sadly I didn’t get to see it (I had to hold down the fort at home) but it was apparently it was spectacular.
Later in the weekend during his stadium round the evil 6 in hand came back to haunt him. In the video you can see his head go up, legs get confused and than take the rail of an oxar. They continued on like nothing happened so he learned those carts are going to kill him!
@2DogsFarm wtf?!
Back in the Day, the B Show in Barrington had carriages on Sundays.
My TB could not get over the Horse-Eating Monster Machines chasing those poor horses
I could not warm-up on Sunday morning due to his Certain Demise if he saw them
My mom’s QH had the same opinion. He did every. single. other. thing. we ever asked him to do, but we honestly don’t think he’d have ever handled a cart. And that horse did not say No.
Bragging on my (alleged)TWH.
First time off my farm in 4yrs, took him to my Driving Club’s GTG at our fairgrounds.
Cared not a whit for carriages & horses all sizes.
What did rev his motor was the Clydesdale mare one member brought.
He bellowed so loud for her, I felt like I’d put a quarter in the Magic Fingers
Ignoring the minis:
Looking for his ladylove:
So last night I went to take my evening pills and opened the pill caddy and it was empty. Sat there staring stupidly at it when a dim memory crept back in. Didn’t I just take two pills? And wasn’t one of them really bitter? Then if this caddy is empty then whose pills or what pills did I take?
I took my cat’s meds.
Prozac and felimazole.
I can’t take prozac - it gives me SUCH a headache and I’m on meds for low thyroid so yeah I really need another med to lower it further still.
Can’t believe I did that. Do vaguely remember having Duncan on my lap and thinking how was I going to get the pills in his head since he was facing away from. Well, problem solved…
Dum dumb dumb…
Oh… oh no… I hope you feel ok!
Well so far no ill effects apart from feeling a bit queasy this am but toast and tea and all gone!
I guess it’s an improvement over giving the cat my meds.
I walked into a couch this morning and my toe bent back really far. It still hurts as I write this, after pain medicine. It looks broken and I probably should have iced it. Well, it’s too late now.
I got up the other night, walked around the end of the bed, and caught my left big toe in the hem of the right leg of my PJs. WHAM! Hit the deck. DH flies bolt upright “What the heck!?” Well, what do you think? “You scared the dickens out of me!” Well, it wasn’t exactly on purpose, dear…
