The Elusive 2H Living Quarters Trailer

So I have begun to consider my own rig, and I am interested in a living quarters or at least weekender model. I’d like to do some horse camping, away shows, and also use the trailer for camping trips without the horse. I have one horse and want to minimize the size of my rig. I am seeing very few two-horse living quarters or weekender trailers. I’d be fine with a 4’ or 6’ LQ area but a toilet is a must, and some of the weekender models lack one.

If you have a 2H LQ, what brand and model do you have? How did you find it?
I’m in Florida and although it seems that there are plenty of trailer dealers (including gently pre-owned, which would be my preference) 2 horse LQs are rare.

They are rare b/c they are not popular at all. most people want to take 2 horses camping, and they use the third stall to hold hay, chairs, shavings, etc.

this is a really nice little trailer. in a slant, adding that 3rd horse adds very little length.

and here’s a weekender with a shower/toilet combo. I’ve bought from this dealer before, she’s a pleasure to work with and honest.

I have a friend with a sundowner sportman that is a two horse with a weekender. That’s insulated with storage but no bathroom/stove and a rear tack. It’s a nice trailer and pretty short.

I’ve never camped anywhere that didn’t have at least pit toilets and water and there are lots of options for on demand showers.

I don’t think there is as much demand for two horse LQ trailers as there is three horse. I usually only haul one horse for camping, but have a 3 horse LQ trailer and would not go smaller. The extra space gives me plenty of room for things like feed, hay, portable generator, outdoor tables and chairs, etc. I have a hay rack, and I have never used it because I can store stuff safely inside.

As far as a toilet, I would not have an LQ without one. Most places I can at have bath houses, but I love the convenience of having my own bathroom. I will usually shower in bath houses, if they are clean, but I refuse to hike somewhere in the dark in the middle of the night if I have to go. If you find a trailer that you like that does not have a toilet, you can always get a port a potty like this.

This is something to keep in mind as far as resale. It may take longer to sell a two horse due to lack of interest.

We bought a Bison 2-horse gooseneck with a small living qtrs in it. It does have a shower and toilet in it. I know Bison is not considered top of the line, but no more often my husband and I go camping it does very well for us. It is just the right length that I can pull and haul my horse without worry of a too long trailer for day/local rides. We had at one time a large, three horse Sundowner with 8’ LQ and I was not able to haul it for just local rides so we had to invest in a small bumper pull (which I did not like). The third stall was nice for hauling hay, etc. when we went camping, but we only went for two nights and three days, so having to put all we need in the bed of the pickup is ok for the convenience of the trailer we now have. The one we have is this one

Thanks, all. I have seen a few Bisons that look suitable and of course the price is right. I like the pared down features they offer in the two-horse LQ: the 2 H has the potty and shower, and I think a microwave with no gas stove is fine for weekend camping for me, since I can plug in a coffee maker, hot plate and cook out on a hibachi.

I like PasoLover’s comments about utility for local rides. I doubt I’ll have many times when I haul a second horse camping. It’s more likely I will haul a second horse to shows or day events such as hunter paces if a barn buddy wants to come. The trailer turning/parking situation at my boarding barn is pretty tight so the smaller the rig, the better.

I also doubt that I will be camping for more than a few days at a time, so sufficient feed, hay and shavings can fit in the truck bed.
Living in Florida, I think having a small LQ would serve double duty for me, since my SO and I also enjoy camping sans horse and the LQ could function as a toy hauler for our horseless camping trips, holding bikes, kayaks, etc.

I have a 94 4 Star 2 horse with midtack, rear tack, and DIY LQ. I bought it used, didn’t care for the mid tack at first, but have come to really like it. Tons of storage and I use it as a mudroom on camping trips. Just sort of lucked in to it…friend of a friend was selling it & the price was right.

You also might want to think about Trails West. Not sure if they are in your neck of the woods, but they are pretty popular here in the PNW. This looks to be up your alley- http://www.double-j.com/2017-trails-west-classic-specialite-76-tall-8x13-alum-8ft-short-wall-awning-full-living-quarters-2-horse-trailer-Wdqb|4d.html

I bought this in the extra tall/wide 2 horse version, and there have been a few times I’ve wished it was a 3 horse, even through I only regularly haul 1 horse, I have taken 2 overnight a few times, and wished for the extra space. My next trailer will be a 3 horse. I couldn’t swing the full LQ, so this Comfort Package they offer was a great compromise for me. http://www.double-j.com/2016-trails-west-classic-specialite-3-horse-w-comfort-package-rear-broom-closet-side-tack-steel-frame-w-aluminum-skin-upgraded-axles-jmdb|4d.html

I ended up going with a 3 slat with a roomy DR. I didn’t want to deal with cost/ weight/ and just “stuff” of a full LQ- so I negotiated into my price on the 3h that they 1.) incl. a 120 30amp shore power 2.) a corner 30gal water tank 3.) a walk thru door. With this I can plug in cook, run fans, a heater. I have drinking water. The walk thru door is very hand to use horse compartment for stuff like taking a cowboy shower, leaving the dog w plenty ventilation, trash can, grubby boots and dirty stuff etc. I hang a water bucket and use it as a sink to wash up my cooking stuff. I have a portable camping potty thing. —For me it’s enough to camp comfortably with some perks, but reduced overall purchase price, and not requiring the maintenance and hauling around added weight n stuff when just trucking horse somewhere routine. And–if I need to pack a ton of stuff, like trunks, equipment, hay, etc. my DR easily is still plenty of room/functional packed full.

I have a memory foam mattress, something for my clothes, a trunk that doubles as step to get up on the GN bed, a cabinet for my first aid, hotplate, cups/plate etc. I made it all look really nice, so I really “like” the space…yet it is 100% practical and functional if I have to pack up my barn into it w 8 bales of hay. I got indoor outdoor carpet in a nice pattern, brown color—covers the grey carpet protects from dirt/grubbyness and gives a nice look. The indoor outdoor can be taken out and hosed down. Retro metal cabinet looked cool, holds lots of stuff, light, easy to clean, safe to cook on.

For me also 3H gives me room to use the 3rd stall, but I have a old draft babysitter I end up carting around and a horse whose freaky about normal size stall—so I take 1st divider out, give him a double stall and the old draft is find in rear stall which is very roomy on a slant. In addition, I like that I can open dividers haul just one loose box stall style----this is also very handy for hauling hay…furniture…appliances …without horses.

If I actually hauled 3 horses regular—I’d have gotten a head to head or maybe 2+1. But for me—the overall size of the 3h slant is handy to skip around, no prob tight parking but I have the perks of versatility and extra room for all sorts of stuff. I got it for the versatility/options. Also—as someone who always had straight load, vans, big rigs head to head —this particular slant made me feel more at ease w a escape door big enough to get a horse out thru in an urgent situation.

this link should take you to my pictures of how I tricked out my DR to be my “tiny horse hotel”. I’ve seen so many…rather awful DIY LQ attempts…I also made it so everything removes to pristine DR if I decide to sell this trailer.

If you are buying new and have a decent budget, Risa at Happy Trails can make anything in a straight load that your heart desires, I do believe.

I was debating between a 2-horse and a 3-horse, and just bought the 3-horse. Featherlite, Exiss, and Bison all make nice models with a small living quarters that contain either toilet and shower, or toilet/shower combo. If the dealer doesn’t have exactly what you want, it CAN be ordered from the manufacturer if you can wait 6 months. That might be the way for you to go.

Equispirit.

It does exist!!! I have a Sundowner 2 horse straight load with mid tack, living quarters including shower & toilet. I just retired from showing and this wonderful trailer is for sale. You are right 2 horse trailers with the right amenities in the living quarters are hard to find. This has been a dream setup. Since there is a mid tack, if you decide to haul 2 horses you have plenty of room for everything else. My trailer is listed on Horse Trailer World. http://www.horsetrailerworld.com/home/trailerdetail.asp?ID=1097862 It’s in great condition. I hauled it myself with no issues. Email me with any questions or for more pictures. Open to offers but no trades.

A friend of mine has a Sundowner Horizon Rancher series 2 horse LQ. It’s perfect for her to take her one horse for a long trip, or for me to tag along for a weekend.

http://www.sundownertrailer.com/tlr-Horizon_8016G.html

She had to buy it new, because as you know used 2H LQs are as rare as hen’s teeth.

Many trailer manufacturers will make a 2H LQ, but it might cost you.

Most 2H LQs that I’ve seen in stock are the more narrow 6’9", so if you have a large horse and want to ever trailer 2 horses you might have to custom order an 8’ wide trailer.

Very nice and I love your models! The cats look comfortable and your old dog is so sweet.

Thanks! Yeah, everyone seems to like it. I have fam out of state–so after years of frustration finding petsitters or 5hr drives with miserable pets in the truck…just load up the whole crew and go. The cats can travel in carriers for safety but I let them out for a break in the “tiny horse hotel” use cat pan, drink, eat etc. And I got them used to it at home, so they are familiar with being in there, like it, have had some test drives around the block. Less traumatic wham all of the sudden in a box for 5 hrs on the road. The dog has much more room than back seat too. Once at my reli’s they have toys, the whole box in the horse stall area , I give them stuff to climb on. I found some small mesh wire panels that fit securely in my drop down window opening so I can have everything open and cat safe. Little weird/ traveling circus but it’s solved hassles traveling staying with family and friends.

I’m constantly surprised there isn’t more demand for this type of rig. I would love a 2h weekender that had a small enough footprint so that it was still convenient for everyday use. Some of those 3h models are just so darn long and heavy.

But the majority of the small GN 2h weekenders I see are aftermarket conversions.

My 3h is…I think 18-19 ft on the floor. 7 wide, 7’6" tall. I have a Ram 2500. GN deck is…7-8ft.

I don’t find this size a problem. But, size was a factor. I saw a 4h for sale that I was torn about but, the overall length was going to start being a PITA skipping in and out of crowded parking lots, tight places, and peoples homes not intended for rigs, that I visit sans horses.

Biggest thing is…make yourself practice backing in around stuff, moving it in tight quarters.

I hauled a racehorse stud around for a friend—in and out of racetracks with really jammed up parking and everyone has a GN of some size. It also gave me a good idea of what size is big but u can still snake it in easy with some practice…and what really is big enough it starts being a hassle unless you really need one that big for that many horses.

*** also, for those thinking dressing up the dressing room on a 2h w some perks may be a good options—check out youtube for stuff on airstream, van and bus living, tiny house, rving. You can find many good ideas, simple stuff, products, solutions. Trailer shopping you see some god awful DIY LQ’s that are IMO a real turn off. You can definitely make yourself a comfortable DR to camp in without getting into huge sums of $$$$ or hassle.

Also-- when negotiating price with a dealer, even if it’s used trailer—try getting them to add in stuff if you can’t beat down there price anymore. For the dealer, things like adding a 30amp shore power, a water storage tank, a ramp, a walkthru, a roof fan, interior fans…this stuff doesn’t actually cost them much. Theres a huge mark up on it if you pay after the fact…but the actual labor and parts don’t cost them much…so you can fenagle these add ons to increase value of your final price.

In terms of toilets/WC. Most campgrounds that you’d want to stay in—have decent showers/WC. I have a camping compost toilet I learned about from Tiny House folks. Its a 5gal bucket with seat, kitchen garbage bag, and compressed sawdust pellets like “woody pet” I get mine at TSC. It’s so simplistic. It absolutely doesn’t get smelly. Really. I didn’t believe it either! You just put some wood pellets in bottom, and sprinkle more ontop every time you use it. When ready to throw out, tie up the bag, throw in dumpster. I know it sounds!!! But it’s very effective, not gross, not smelly at all. If I am at a campground I use it when I don’t feel like going down to WC, or driving…no more ??? rest area bathrooms. I like it aalso because it “dry” . If the potty gets knocked over …no gross smelly spill. I don’t have to pour anything out eeew gross. Really—it’s been the best quik camp potty solution Ive ever tried. Cat box for, er, ahem, people.

For showering–there’s a lot of options. Solar shower bag can work great–showering in the horse compartment doubles as keeping it clean ;0) There are also electric water heaters—like bucket heaters, w a thermostat, stick it in your gravity feed water tank…take a warm shower. Or there are small portable propane water heaters you can hook gravity feed or hose to. Theres even some neat battery power pumps w shower head—tack a water bucket, leave in sun to warm, stick you shower head pump thing is—voila shower. And mosst nice campgrounds—that you’d actually want to stay in—have good showers. Every likes a hot shower.

I had Risa at Happy Trails build a Hawk 2 horse straight load, 3 foot mid tack, tiny LQ for me. I have a toilet and shower, a sink, microwave, refrigerator, ac with heat strip and a bed, it is all I need and is just over 21 feet on the floor. I had length added to horse compartment in body and head, bc I have a big horse. I love it!
