Last time I built a barn, I had just the shell put up, then had the inside done by various workers. This time I went for all-in-one (big mistake?) The builder started on the stalls before having any of the outside done–has anyone else ever had someone do this? I’ll have to post photos of the unnecessary framing they put put for the stall fronts and backs, but they put those up, then decided to start the side boards that the sheet metal would eventually would go on.
well personally the only building I have seen built where an interior part was built to have the building built around it was a bank. The vault shell is constructed first then the building erected around it,
Have you been able to talk to anyone this builder has built a barn for to see what their outcome was?
We had the shell built and then built the stalls. The stall fronts required quite a bit of its own framing/structure.
It does seem weird to build the stalls with no building around it. Were they waiting on supplies had had the stuff for the stalls there so worked on those?
Look forward to your photos so we can all enjoy your barn with you!
Agree with others that it seems weird. The stalls should tie into the shell.
Is your shell all metal? Or will it have wood posts/trusses?
That seems…not ideal. Not sure what kind of stalls you have but I’d be worried about them getting damaged when walls are being erected around them. Probably too late to go back at this point, but maybe ask how they plan to protect the stall fronts when building the structure.
Well, after they put in stall framing, THEN they started putting on the side boards that the siding will attach too. I can’t explain this.
I hope you have not paid in full for this project, or even a large down payment
I would photograph/record every day of this project with date stamps.
I’m trying to finally add pictures of the ridiculous extra framing.20241020_173313.heic (2.5 MB) 20241020_173254.heic (3.3 MB)
The original builder walked off the job. Hopefully a roof will be put on next week.
ETA: any tips for added photos that aren’t as a link? Maybe I need to use my PC to figure this out.
2nd ETA: I meant to say that the view is looking at the stall fronts from the aisle. The walls in back separate the stalls from the overhang/ run in shed area.Uploading: Screenshot_20241024_152031_Gallery.jpg…
This should be easy to rectify. A little bit more lumber for the girts and you’re back in business. I wouldn’t even bother taking the extra framing down, just screw in the plywood or boards to line the stall and move on.
How are you adding pics now? To add them inline on mobile, click here and select your pic. It’ll show up like this screenshot.
Not quite the same, but my barn was successfully built from the inside out.
First the builder put down the footings.
Then we brought in (on trucks) two prefabbed (by Amish builders in PA) sets of 4 stalls, complete with dutch doors inside and out. They set those on the footings, and then the Amish carpenters built the rest of the barn around it (including the hay loft). Local contractors put in the plumbing, electricity, and the siding.
Only two things got screwed up. They were supposed to install gutters, but didn’t (I had them installed them myself many years later). When they nailed on the siding, the points of the nails stuck out into the stalls (above the kickboards) and we had to have plywood nailed on the inside over the nails.
Twenty years later the barn is still great.
That’s what I clicked, and you see the result above.
Some of it was removed yesterday. It would have looked super dumb sticking up behind bars on the stall fronts, if that’s the way I go. No matter what, it would have been extra places for the horses to whack themselves or get caught on while rolling. 2x lumber will go on the outsides of the posts so the stalls will be as big as possible. I may do sliding doors instead of Dutch doors between the stalls and run-in/overhang. I’m trying to figure out how that will work before removing framing on that side.
Ah, maybe because your pics are .heic rather than a more traditional pic format. Try saving as .jpg or just take a screenshot of your pics, and upload that instead?
It’s hard to see your layout from your pics, but even with that I would have probably cut them and made a ledge or something.
That is a super weird way to frame stalls, no matter what.
I hope I’ll be able to figure it out on the PC, I don’t see a way to change it on my phone. That’s how my camera decided to save them…
It might be in settings? But a screenshot should upload fine if you want to try that
Indeed it did. Hopefully both show up.
Almost! You’ve just got to wait until the “uploading” thing finishes. You’ve got one, though!
You can also click this to preview your post, and see how it’ll look.
That is why I can’t open them. Even if I download them, my computer will not let me open them.
