"The Last Cowboy"by Taylor Sheridan on Paramount Network

For anyone looking for a new horse series to watch, you might want to check out “The Last Cowboy” on Paramount Network (also available on Amazon Prime). This is a reality series about NHRA reining, and is produced by writer Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Sons of Anarchy, Yellowstone). I’m about 20 minutes into the first episode and so far it’s okay, just a lot of introductions and focusing more on the people than the horses for now. Hopefully future episodes highlight more of the riding/training and not so much on the interpersonal crap. But it is for a non-horsey audience so I’m sure that may not be the case.

Figured I’d offer a heads up for anyone interested.

I’m trying to figure out why they called the show “The Last Cowboy.” These guys are not “cowboys” in the truest sense of the word. They are reining trainers. And, there’s plenty of reining trainers, so these guys aren’t the “last.” But I digress. I believe Taylor Sheridan rides reining horses, so hence the show. The trainers profiled are some of the best in the business. In my opinion, reining horses are the best horses in the world. I think it will be a good show.

OMG Luca Fappani’s horse’s left knee is a grapefruit!

I wonder if he is wearing a knee pad?

Some Reiners spin so fast that they at times hit their own knee and those guards protect them:

Only one is necessary to protect both knees.

No knee pad.

I thought I saw one.

Hmm…I thought I looked hard to see if it was a boot and only saw a pitch black knee with a lump, but I will admit to having had several glasses of wine since I watched 2 episodes of Yellowstone first.

I don’t watch TV, but that was a link thru the NRHA web page and I know people there, so watched it on my laptop, not a big screen.

That part was just a few fleeting frames that horse came into view. I noticed the large knee and thought/assumed it was booted, as some are.

Guess that sharper eyes may tell us more, once paying attention better, knowing there is something there.

OK peeps, so if you have not watched Episode 1, pay close attention to the segment about Andrea Fappani, specifically when his son is riding. Does the son’s horse have a knee boot or a big knee???

I’d watch it again, but it’s a nice day and I have horses to ride and grass to mow and a date tonight.

It was a boot.

Luca has a knee boot on the horse.

It’s a black Professional Choice knee boot folks. Designed to KEEP knees from looking like grapefruit.

Maybe it refers to the “last cowboy” standing after the event in Vegas. I don’t think its necessarily that they are the last cowboys out there. The title has really angered some in the cow horse and cutting world, but I just see it as strictly marketing. There is no other name that would draw the same response from the general public.

I know all the riders in this show - some more than others - and none of them would call themselves the last cowboy. Heck - Andrea even said he isn’t a cowboy. He is a horse trainer.

Yeah, not really Cowboys. The ranchers I know who show do reined ranch horse stuff. But it was still interesting since I have a neighbor who does reining and gave me a little insight. The show before that, “Yellowstone”, was way hokey. The reining stuff there was weird to me. I’m not a Reiner, but that Yellowstone show was just weird.

I think Taylor Sheridan is a reiner. Wow his guns.

Taylor himself is a reiner. Rides with Tom Foran in Burbank.

I couldn’t get through one episode of Yellowstone. The pacing was odd, there was no rhythm to it. I think I was supposed to be affected by it, instead I was actively annoyed. And I wanted to like it!
