The "Nair No Hair Pull" mane a success!

Used the handy tip of putting bikini line Nair into a needle-tipped hair dye bottle, parting my yearling’s INTOLERABLY thick mane and dotting it up the crest as an alternative to pulling. She is one of those sensitive skins that tosses and fusses at even the SIGHT of your arm moving away from your head–wont’ even give the fact that its not hurting (when tried with linament) a thought. The Nair actually worked well!

Didn’t even get my pulling comb OUT! I am a traditionalist as well and there’s nothing like a freshly pulled mane done right, but for those who’s horses can’t STAND it this seems like a great solution.

Wow! You did a super job! When I read about using Nair, I could not figure out how it would work. (I could just envision my horse with big bald patches, if I had tried to use it. :eek:)

You are a brave person to give it a try. The new and improved mane looks like it would be very easy to braid.

Well she has no major shows coming up, and being from Canada she is just GREATTTT at growing hair (her true talent in life) so I figured even when she came out patchy, homely and bald, it would grow back eventually. But it actually worked! The key was really JUST dotting little specks in, about the size of a pen tip all through it. Left it on for about 10 minutes, and went in on dry hair…voila!

I’ll be excited when I part it to braid in a month or so if she’ll have little bald patches :lol:

Many thanks again to pintopiaffe for this idea! This seemed to work for both the baby and me, I believe I will do this from now on to prevent those head-jerking arguments.

Did you just put the nair in the center of the crest, or did you do it along the outer edges too?

Luckily for me her hair already parted on either side of her neck, so I just dotted it in and around that line, in the center of her crest. I didn’t go on the outer edges at all, but I can’t imagine going along the bottom would be awful (or along the top maybe if you wanted to get rid of bleachy hairs?)

ok. Never heard this before. Who is the genius that came up with this? Ok, so on dry mane, then just wash out thoroughly? and for application dots throughout? or a thin line?

I can see how this might thin a mane, but how could it shorten one? Or do you just razor it shorter when you get it thin enough?

This was my question–how did you get it so straight?? You said dry hair–did you not wash it to get the hair out?

Yes, I just applied it to dry hair, then washed it out with shampoo. I actually thinned it with very DULL scissors I use at the barn for hay string, but i used one edge of the scissors like a razor-- pulled the longer hairs under the scissors edge and pressed with my thumb, took 5 mins top to get the stragglers.

And yes kudos again to pintopiaffe, made a believer out of me :yes: Would have taken me an HOUR to pull that thick thick mane, plus saved me the lineament and an argument, and those annoying hair cuts and blisters you get in your fingers if you’re like me and pull with your fingers and the comb.

I read the thread and couldn’t wait to try it out as well. It works wonders!!! And SO EASY!!! Experiment with a small amount in a small section. I know I’ll be a pro in no time!!

OMG, what a genius idea. I’m going to buy a bottle and try it myself on my incredibly thick maned, fussy gelding. My coach has threatened not to school me at the next show if I don’t learn how to braid, but I can’t braid if the mane looks like a Thelwell pony!

But I wouldn’t know the difference and can’t imagine it makes a major one. It was 5 bucks I think? And yep, in that bottle.

And as pintopiaffe pointed out when she was telling us the first time, DO IT SPARINGLY…you can always go back and do it again, but you can’t stick hair back in!

I’m going to have to try this. I have one who’s a monster about having his mane pulled…so I don’t. I’ve just shortened it with thinning shears for several years now and used the Solocomb, but it’s getting too thick! Thanks to pp for the initial introduction, and to the OP for the tips!

This is going to make my life so much easier. My 2 year olds hair is a nightmare.

I lip chained him and still can’t pull his mane. I feel terrible because it is so hard to pull out it must really hurt him. I don’t blame him for not liking it.

I am going to try this. I will try to get before and after pics too!

His last braids were so ugly because his mane was so thick. I tried to thin it and shorten, but without pulling it was too thick.

So you split it down the middle and just put little dots in the middle? His hair is very thick so I could easily split it down the middle. I would assume that is better then doing underneath or on top so when it does grow out it isn’t sticking straight up!!

As I sit here my legs stinging, I will say that Nair really hurts if you have any open cuts (say, from shaving) on your body. So if your horse has bites, growths or sensitive spots on his mane I’d be careful. It aggravates any break in skin and the aggravation lasts a long time (for me at least).
I’m guessing irkenequine that you didn’t place any Nair directly on the skin, right, just applied it on hair above the skin line?

Nair Bikini is really tough enough to melt horse hair? - ouch - pity the bikini area.
You guys make me laugh. I’d say it would go on the skin too, to melt below the hairline as well.

Your before and after pictures are GREAT! This has to be one of the BEST ideas I’ve seen! As others have said, I would Never have thought of this as an option to pulling a mane. Thanks Irkinequine and thanks Pintopiaffe for the descriptions and the visuals on how to do this!

This idea has just made my whole spring. The last horse standing in the barn with a shaggy mane is our big Belgian school horse who has an identity crisis and thinks she is a beginner hunter. Her mane is so very thick, we are talking 3+" thick, and she HATES having it pulled. I have students wanting to take her for their local beginner classes at the end of the month and will need to braid, so there will be no way to do my 1/2 shave and shorten cheating maneuver this year. I have already put 2 hours into pulling it, removed a muck bucket worth of hair, and it still looks like I’ve done nothing! I think we are going to walmart to pick some up and try a few applications of this to see if it saves me and the mare our sanity! =)

I do it a little more toward the underside, to about 3/4 to the top.

You DO put it on the skin, (hence the needlenose bottle) because it will break hair and make it really frizzy where it broke–that’s actually a problem, you have to be careful of.
