I did dot it directly on the skin, and I would believe it might burn in an open sore/rub/something like that–but when you part the hair, you’re peering in so close you can see the skin. Then again, my girl’s hair was so thick that skin had never even seen the light of DAY, let alone a bug bite, so I wasn’t too worried there. Her skin is pretty sensitive (threw herself on the ground during her first round of shots, what a proud mom I was) and she didn’t even shake her head, not even when we reached the 10 minutes. No left over bumps, heat, or rash either.
I really want to try this, but after ending up with a bleeding rash when I tried it I’ll admit I’m afraid of torturing my boy…
I think it might be prudent to do a “test” spot first to make sure that your horse isn’t allergic or will have any adverse reactions. One small spot to test it out is way better than slathering in the whole mane right off the bat, IMO.
At least, that’s what they tell humans to do with all manner of beauty chemicals (face masques, hair bleach kits, etc)
Oh, absolutely. That’s part of the reason why I use the bikini line formula though, as it is the least offensive of the offenses…
But definitely test.
I’ve never had a horse react to it, but certainly it’s more than possible!
This is a fantastic idea! It is definitely going into my notebook of random life hints. Have to make sure that I wear gloves though, because my own skin abhors Nair.
This sounds promising! My mare, who hates with a passion mane pulling, and can spot a pulling comb coming a mile away is going to get a trial run this weekend. Now u just randomly put dots of nair all threw out the mane, how big of a dot are we talking?
Okay PintoPiaffe I’m going to try this on my Iberian Warmblood mare. Her mane is an absolute DISASTER!!! Think Andalusian mane that was at one time pulled but I know it wasn’t done by me (and I have had her for 2 years!!) but is now half grown out but is also very bleached on the ends from the sun. I hate to pull mane and already have one to pull this week (his is really thin but had been a western mane so really just needs to be shortened) I have been debating on what to do With Sophie’s I will be sure to get before and after pictures.

I’ve got one I’m going to try it on too. Someone DID pull her mane, but somehow they didn’t pull it right and now it’s waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy too thick to braid and too short to pull again or it will also be too short to braid. Duh.
How much of a ‘clump’ of hair came out in one piece? I can’t wait to see how this starts growing out.
I actually didn’t experience clumps–I wet it and put shampoo in, then when i scrubbed with my fingers it just tangled in my fingers as I went–I mean definitely lots of hair coming out but nothing falling out in big hunks/you weren’t able to just pull out chunks when it was dry, etc.
I did dots about the size of a pencil tip…teenier and mroe frequent the better than big dots.
I want to see everyone’s pictures! I feel like a traitor to the pulling comb, but darnit it just worked so seamlessly. Using it on one of the grumpy barn ponies this week for more practice.
I am doing it Thursday. I will get pictures!!

Thats disguesting. I dont know anyone who doesnt have a reaction to nair. I would never want to put that on my poor horse.
Huh…I know darn few horses that don’t have an adverse reaction to having their mane pulled!

I actually LOVE pulling manes…I love when they look finished and pretty, and ironically owned a cranky, sensitive chestnut mare who didn’t object one bit to having it done. I’m all for pulling when possible but when you have one like mine where the options are roach, thinning shears or a twitch, this is a great solution.

I think it is a fantastic idea and recommend as above that you spot test - as you really should with ANY new chemical (linament, fly spray) - before you use it.
If it works safely and spares misery, I am all for it!
