This color isn't suppose to exist...

So here is an akhal teke who I have not been able to decide what color she is. Bay, buckskin, dun? Father was buckskin (dun?) and mother is chestnut.

Guesses?[/QUOTE]

That dorsal stripe looks more like a counter-shading stripe than a dun factor stripe. It disappears/blends into the tail rather than remaining distinctly colored.

Any shading on the back of her ears? If she has ear shading I’d be more inclined to believe dun.

If no shading on the back of the ears, my vote is for sooty buckskin or bay.

A dun dorsal stripe can indeed start to fade, and the ear tips, while common, are not a necessity

Absolutely. But if I were putting money on it, with that dorsal stripe I’d want ear shading too. If there are bars as well as tips I’d put even more money down.

(IMO ear shading is much less likely to be a result of sooty than other things like leg stripes, wither marks, etc.)

I’m more inclined to think the same. The tail is also lacking guard hairs. Not sure how common that is with duns, but I haven’t seen a dun without the guard hairs myself.

Here is a picture of her ears, if you can see the link. Otherwise, perhaps this link will work, though the colors a a bit washed out in this picture compared to the others.

Here is another folder full of ear pictures.

What are guard hairs in the tail?
