Those who order feed on Chewy... does the price stay steady?

I’m toying with the idea of changing feeds. Currently feeding Triple Crown senior and ration balancer. I’m looking for more bang for the buck and would like a higher fat content and lower price. It probably doesn’t exist, but I’m just window shopping. I ran across Buckeye Cadence Ultra on Chewy. It is listed at $29.99 for a single shipment. It also says suggested retail is $42.99. It is not flagged as being a “deal” or on sale in any way.

So, how reliable is the pricing on Chewy? I don’t want to commit to changing over just to find my next order is going to be $42.99 per bag, which is $10 more than what I’m paying for TC senior. Thoughts from these who order from Chewy often?

Mine had a few bucks price increase a few months after I set up autoship, but it’s still comparable to buying locally.

Even at a $4 increase (which hopefully wouldn’t be the case) it would equal the price of TC senior, but is a higher calorie content per pound, which is what I’m after. They also have a ration balancer for alfalfa diets at a very reasonable price. I just might have to give this a try.

Been ordering Buckeye Ration Balancer from Chewy since 2020 and the price is remarkably steady. As is the price of food for our cats.

I also order compressed alfalfa hay bales from Chewy to get through the brief transition from pasture Coastal Bermuda going dormant until winter ryegrass begins to grow. That has increased about &5 per bale in 4 years. But so have the compressed bales at Tractor Supply.

You can’t put a price on the convenience factor, though a few times hay has not been available so I keep a decent supply on hand just in case.

do you know the cal/lb for that?

I’ve had a subscription from Chewy for longer than I care to admit for some essentials and the prices stay reasonably the same. The one time, I had a big price jump cause of my dogs food, they called to see if I still wanted it or switch to a similar product that hadn’t jumped in price. Its increased a few bucks over the year, but they randomly send my dogs free toys and treats occasionally as well.

I should call to be sure but Mad Barn has it at 1.96 Mcal/pound. Whereas TC is listed on TC site at 1.55.

Not really. I order Tribute and sometimes Crypto Aero from Chewy, and it’s usually within a few bucks, but a big price change does happen occasionally. When it’s a lower number by a lot, either they have a sale or I think they are selling off some stock in a warehouse. I also think maybe they fluctuate stock based on demand, and so sometimes I save a little bit on the markup that is basically the shipping upcharge for “free” shipping.

that would be interesting if it’s really that high! I knew TC lists all the cal, thanks! Maybe I’ll call or email Buckeye to double check, MB has things wrong occasionally

Post back if you get an answer please! I’ll try to remember to call them tomorrow. It is 14% fat so it’s feasible. I’m just concerned now after IPEsq’s post that the prices won’t stay as low as they’re currently listed.

I would be very careful about ordering feed from chewy if you can’t get it locally. I’ve had issue after issue with my autoship Cavalor getting to me. I don’t have a ton of storage space and only had one horse on it for a while, so I don’t keep a big stash.

Multiple times FedEx was days later than the tracking date, and multiple times they’ve been out of stock, even when I had it on autoship (how can you not manage your inventory?!). To add insult to injury, when it was out of stock, I never even got an email about it, so it was a few days of me saying “oh the feed will be here soon” before I actually checked and realized there was no notification. When I called, they were like “oh we have no idea when it’ll be in stock and no way to find that out” even when I escalated to a manager. I’ve also gotten the wrong feed (strucomix instead of strucomix senior). The nail in the coffin is when they straight up lost two bags of feed (supposedly picked up by FedEx but who knows), I finally realized it didn’t show (again ) and called them. They apologized profusely, and said they were shipping out right away (but they don’t offer expedited shipping, ever 🤦🏻) so it would be a few days. Two days later I checked for tracking, didn’t have it in my email, so called back to get it. The girl I talked to a few days prior REFUNDED ME instead of shipping two more bags, after telling me she was shipping bags.

I guess they could work out if you keep a big stash at home, but the anxiety of not knowing when it was in stock and having to constantly check the site, and hope it shows up, wasn’t with the convenience.

If Chewy switched shippers to UPS from Fedex I’d bet that would eliminate 90 percent of the complaints.

Well that’s a bummer. Buckeye’s site shows only one retailer within driving distance of me and I need to call tomorrow to see if they do actually carry it. So that may or may not be an option/back up to Chewy.

MadBarn has definitely been off - by several hundred calories/pound. I recall Purina Ultium Competition being listed as 1500kcal/lb, as well as a few wildly different nutrient profiles vs the manufacturer. (One hopes it is MadBarn and not the manufacturers that are wildly off here).

We have had good luck with Chewy for the dog food, and I’ve ordered horse feed from them before with no shipping issues or wild price changes. To be fair - we have very few shipping issues as we are in a populous area with tons of warehouses/shipping points, and the “rural” places are crammed in the middle of 3 big cities. Price wise - they DO promote some stuff for auto ship setup that doesn’t always last forever. Check the fine print.

To be fair, the same feed is the same (or close enough) listed on Big Dee’s. Which I still find odd but if it’s a promotional thing, it looks like not just Chewy? I’m not disputing any of what’s been said in this thread, but I just can’t find a reason for the feed to be listed lower than expected from more than one retailer. Also, I haven’t found the fine print :no_mouth:

I use Chewy periodically for a feed that’s hard to find locally (Fiberenergy). I’ve never had an issue. It’s always in stock and arrives right when I order it. Perhaps the Calvalor issue is on their end and not on Chewy’s?!

I’ve never had issues with Chewy and I’ve consistently use their auto ship since 2017 on various horse and dog feeds. I began with Chewy while living in a remote area, where the stock available at the local Tractor Supply was incredibly unpredictable. I received Buckeye products and then dog food monthly, always keeping about a week or two supply ‘extra’ on hand in case of inclement weather.

Now I use their pharmacy for prescription dog food on top of normal dog food, and would confidently order horse feed from them again.

As far as prices, I’ve never noticed an increase, or it was minimal. The convenience Chewy offers always beats out trying to track down feed at local stores!

For those who use Chewy regularly for feed, just take a look at the pricing on this. The suggested retail is struck through. But nothing else indicates that it’s on sale if sorts. There are some feeds that have a red bookmark of sorts that says “deal” on it, indicating it’s on sale. This one doesn’t. I’m just highly skeptical that the price won’t go up. That being said, Big Dee’s has it for nearly the same price. So maybe I should just give it a go?

Yes, I’m highly overthinking this. But it seems I’ve run across something way too good to be true, but cannot verify that it is in fact TOO good.

I’d give it a go - even if the price doesn’t stay there forever, at $13 of savings per bag, I’d jump on it! Plus, I think most Buckeye feeds exist at comparable price points… I fed Buckeye Gro 'n Win for years from Chewy, and I never noticed a price increase.

Interesting, I’m pretty close to you and haven’t had any problems getting mine every 3 weeks.

Prior to Chewy I had an autoship from Petco but they discontinued my grain. It looks like their selection has become very limited, mostly Standlee products.
