Too many concussions

I have had tinnitus for 30 years. They make noise cancelling hearing aides that help a lot.

I use a noise machine at night as I have had tinnitus for 30 years and it does help.

I am using the noise machine for now, hoping for something that is less…annoying to others.

Physio today was ok - but no real answers on the ticking in the back of my head. Have exercises to do to see if it helps. Improving daily overall, but I can recognize that I am not right still.

I have the crackling too. Like rice crispies. I thin k I was told it is inflamed aging disks.

@CHT and anyone else who is interested…

Come join my MIPS Equestrian Helmet FB group.

I created this group in 2019 after my 12th concussion and because a MIPS helmet saved my life during a very freak accident at a show when I was just standing on my own two feet with a MIPS helmet on.

We have brand reps for almost all the brands that make MIPS helmets. We do live video seminars, most recently with Dr. Barry Miller of the Virginia Tech Helmet Safety lab that is currently doing a study on the safety of all the helmets sold in the USA.

I made this group to be the informational center so folks can come and get their questions answered and talk to others who have switched to MIPS equipped helmets.

The link might say “facebook. com” but it will take you right to the group.

Please come talk to us and we can help anyone to know more.

Thanks for making this available to people who aren’t on Facebook. Lots of helpful info!

Tell me if you can’t see it.

I’m happy to put pertinent data on a site that is not Facebook. (In all my non-existent spare time. LOL)

You are getting loads of good advice. Poor decision making is one of the subtle symptoms of brain injury and it is one of the hardest to detect within oneself. Talk things through with your DH and see what he has noticed about you.

I had multiple symptoms for five months after a fall that put me into hospital, unconscious. I had McTimony Chiropractic treatment for something else and with a single manipulation on my skull all the symptoms cleared. Total, unbelievable, magic. I now go immediately to my McTimony person after any horse-related injury.

Did you see the specialist OP for concussion assesment?

No, not yet. Still waiting on the referral. I know they want to wait a month regardless, but I have no idea the wait time (nor does my doctor).

The Physio I went to does concussion testing/baseline testing, so I might do that if the wait seems like it will be longer. Had anybody done concussion baseline testing?

I feel I am 50% back to “normal”, but man do I have to watch my temper/frustration level.

@Xctrygirl already a member! I joined a while back. I appreciate the valuable information and do plan on a MIPS helmet once I can get out and try them on. My replacement Ovation schooling helmet will do for now.

I’ve done baseline testing. I had a fall several years ago, back of head hit gravel and I got an instant migraine. Thank dog I was wearing a helmet!
I went to an urgent care facility that has a head trauma clinic. I think there was a physical exam and there was one done on the computer. Sort of like an IQ test but not entirely. I can’t remember specifics, like how long it took, I wanna say I came back a second time for comparative testing, and the doc looked over my results. When I first got there, up front the doc told me no riding for at least two weeks and I listened. Have since been told that after a fall and a concussion is suspected (I always suspect a concussion after a fall, for anyone) , limit activity as much as possible. No staring at screens trying to read small text, probably no driving if possible. Just let your body rest and do everything possible to avoid re-injury during healing.

Edit to add, the sooner you see someone, the better. Make sure you can keep track of your symptoms from day to day, even if it’s just recorded audio notes (less brain strain).

Are you in Ontario? When I had an issue I was in an MRI within days after going to the ER. I think you should try the ER.

Oh my gosh, is that what it is? Can hear it if I roll my head around. Also in my shoulders-- they are “crunchy.”

Head to Charles Owen Instagram page and check the video they released yesterday.

no, in Alberta. Ironically, I only recently had a skull x-ray…a few days prior to the fall (possible CSF leak). I chose to just do the concussion after care and not worry about a CT or MRI as I didn’t have serious symptoms - didn’t black out, wasn’t vomiting, and didn’t have prolonged double vision…and my husband had a lung infection at the same time, so I didn’t have an easy ride, or someone with clear judgement to take me.

I can’t see it, but then facebook permanently axed my account so I can’t see much else either! (Apparently joining facebook and then immediately joining groups (my barn’s general group and boarder group of course) is what spammers do, I was supposed to have added friends first! Oops.)

If the topic has ever come up of helmets for larger heads (especially oval ones) I’d love to know any recommendations. I wear a 7 7/8 in CO helmets and the biggest I’ve seen with MIPS is two sizes below that.

Agree, even looking at the Charles Owen website, the MIPS seem to not go up to the larger sizes.

We have had the BIG head discussion MANY times.

Champion, I believe, has the biggest of the MIPS helmets.

I will try to find the past threads. If you both @amb & @CHT want to email me your emails I can try to take screenshots or at least send summaries of the info.

my email is: emily.daignault@gmail.com

Neck crackling is mostly stopped - physio seems to have really helped. Now working on balance issues - my homework is to stand feet together with my eyes closed for 5 - 7 seconds at a time, with 30 second breaks. harder than it sounds!

Otherwise I am mostly ok. Still ringing in ears, and I also note I have trouble recalling things. Like a flood went through and wiped out some roads. The knowledge is still there, I just have trouble finding roads to access it!

Starting to wonder if I really want to ride anymore. I don’t like being dull witted. worried another fall might be it.

Please be careful CHT. Can you take a break from riding and handling horses for a bit? Sounds like driving is pretty difficult too, can you limit your trips or have a friend or family member drive you? Your symptoms sounds really serious, please be careful!
