IF Tiz the Law goes on and wins the other two races, KY Derby and Preakness, just how would they handle it? Technically he would be a Triple Crown winner, but the length between races and the Belmont distance change definitely puts all three into a different category. And, of course, the timing to later in the season may self-eliminate some of the competition. A mere asterisk beside the name would seem to merit a bit more explanation.

I have the same misgivings. The “Belmont Stakes” this year just wasn’t. It was a mile and an eighth race with the name Belmont Stakes tacked

The easiest solution to the issue is of course, the same horse not winning all three of the races. If one does, it will be difficult, but an asterisk would really be the only solution since TPTB insist on calling this years races the “Triple Crown”.

The winner of the “Belmont Stakes” this year should have an asterisk as well since it was not a 12 furlong effort. I think changing the distance without changing the name was a poor decision.

How much better company would she need? She smoked the race record by 1 1/2 seconds when often when a race/track record is broken it’s by fifth’s?

She would have been in front of past Acorn winners like Cicada, Ruffian, Shuvee, Susan’s Girl… and the last 3 winners - Abel Tasman, Monomoy Girl and Guarana. Sounds like good company to me!

Not so sure I believe the inadvertent contamination route of rebuttal. Would you suspect anything else from a BNT who is in the limelight for the same positive on 2 separate horses on a big-day race card. This is not me being a simple conspiracy theorist. the industry has made its own bed regarding drugs. I trust no one.

I didn’t say I believe the ‘inadvertent contamination’ comment (and to be honest, not even sure I heard enough to be sure).

We’ll see what happens after the B-test results are in (and they may already be and the investigation is continuing). IIRC, already a big brew-ha about the first split test result being ‘leaked’ to the public… wouldn’t be surprised if the current investigation is being held more tightly (as it is supposed to be).

Hoping he comes through this successfully and we see him back at the track either later this year or for a 4yo season.

Although if I did have a nice mare with the right pedigree and $$, there might be others I would also consider. I keep seeing Info Mischief performing well on the track.

Just had a curiosity question pop into my head with situations such as Tiz the Law. If an agreement is reached with a stud farm (Coolmore in this case), does any $$ change hands now or only upon actual retirement of the horse? Would Coolmore or Sackatoga Stable be able to get any kind of insurance on Tiz the Law if he were to pass away prior to retirement? Would it depend on cause of death?

Yes, I know every agreement is different in terms of both $$ and breeding rights but curious about what general convention is.

As I’m typing this, I can see the Coolmore stallion roster scrolling across their web page. They have a nice roster and their stallions are not all at the high end of prices. One would pay for performance and pedigree but still nice choices

“Could” is the operative word. Whether or not there are spectators at the Derby will be decided by Governor Beshear, not CDI.

Yes, money changes hands now, although probably not all of it. There will also be bonus clauses in the contract for future races that Tiz the Law might win.

I’m sure Sackatoga has the horse heavily insured now, and Coolmore will immediately do the same with their portion. The horse would have already had mortality insurance, now I’d imagine his potential fertility will also be insured.

@LaurieB thanks. The bonus clauses, which I didn’t even think about, make sense in allowing a ‘price’ now based on past performance while covering future performance or lack thereof (ie, so if Tiz the Law, for some reason, stops running at least there is base price.)

Another didn’t realize (and assumed maybe not insurable) that race horses could be insured, while racing, for loss of use (I’m assuming) as well as mortality. Fertility would make sense as I somewhere got the impression that coverage would need to be in place prior to actually breeding (but why fertility now vs upon retirement while he’s on the van to Ashford?)
