Triple Crown 2020

At least he got to fall on the grass, unlike Jimmy Barnes.

Looks like the trailing ribbon on the roses scared Authentic

well I went to my sisterā€™s to watch, as DISH doesnā€™t have NBC at the mo, and I couldnā€™t find a live stream. But she is non horsie and talked thru all the races. sigh. I hope they get settled by Preakness.

Off topic but not worthy of its own thread, this an example of the new ā€œtransparencyā€ policy regarding disqualifications by Churchill Downs. https://www.churchilldowns.com/uploaā€¦s_-_Race_6.pdf The race was on Oaks day. The #7 horse Lasting Legacy is owned by Gary and Mary West.

I saw the clip of the take down by Authentic in the WInnerā€™s Circle, and Baffert had a white mask on (at least for that part of the day). When Authentic spun around, It looks like the crowd at the Winnerā€™s Circle tried to scatter, but it was too crowded. Iā€™m surprised a lot more people didnā€™t get nailed. Actually, looking at it again, the other man was not only knocked down, but it looks like he also was rolled by the hooves.

I think Baffert really tripped in the grass, it looks like he was pushing a woman next to him out of the way, when Authentics rump pushed him, then tripped when he was getting out of the way. I just hope everyone is OK. One broken wrist was enough for the injuries today.

Hereā€™s the link to the clip (and if it doesnā€™t work Search Bob Baffert knocked down by Authentic).

It looks like the horse actually stepped over the other man that fell under his back hooves.

Yeah, well they were kind of crowding the horse thereā€¦

For Baffert today, both the high and the low of racing (excluding falling in the winnerā€™s circle)ā€¦ Thousand Words being a late scratch and Authentic winning a record-tying sixth Derby. Gotta say, like him or not, if you want to win the Derby, Baffert is currently the trainer to go to; no guarantee youā€™re horse will be in the gate but if he is, good chance theyā€™ll win.

What I havenā€™t seen mentioned was John Velazquez getting his 200th G1 win, and what a race to get it in. Why he was getting all the fist bumps after the race from the other jockeys. Congrats to Velazquez!

Disappointed at how many of the trainers appear to give lip service to face masks. D Wayne a few times had his mask pulled down until he realized the camera was on him. Baffert will ā€˜wearā€™ one but it keeps slipping down and Iā€™ve seen him have to pull it up. John Shirreffs with it pulled down while making his comments about taking a car to and from the track.

Storm the Court did better than I expectedā€¦ 6th

Wish heā€™d bumped up to thirdā€¦I had that as my trifecta box.

I watched a tape of the incident and it appeared that they were trying to get him saddled while he was walking. Man reached underneath for the girth and then tightened it really quickly. It seemed that the incident was a reaction to the girth being tightened, because thatā€™s when the horse went straight up in the air. I know that the girths are elastic, but having it tightened while moving may have startled Thousand Words. Anyway, hope there was no serious injury (aside from a broken wrist). I remember that 2-year-old filly going over backwards at the Breeders Cup and fracturing her skull on an iron fence years ago.

Exogenous.

She didnā€™t hit her head on an iron fenceā€“she was being led onto the track for the 2001 Breederā€™s Cup Distaff and reared straight up such that her hind feet left the ground, and she fell backwards and hit the top of her head on the track. (FWIW, she was 3, not 2.) She fractured her skull in the fall but seemed to be doing okay after; IIRC there was some blood from her nose, thatā€™s it. I remember NBC showing her back at the barn, her groom gently stroking her muzzle. She looked wide-eyed, but alert. She was doing well for a few days, then after about a week rapidly declined to where she couldnā€™t get up. :frowning:

I am just looking at Authenticā€™s pedegree. https://www.pedigreequery.com/authentic12 I am no expert on blood lines, but I do think his look interesting, with a lot of different names from the ordinary cropping up. Lots of different ā€œhorse nationalitiesā€ showing up, including India, Ireland, Great Britain. Can anyone give a critique of the pedigree?

Oddly enough I got to watch the pat day race but by half an hour to post time theyā€™d cut it off and I needed a provider to plug in, so no derby for me. Sounds like a good race though!

I think this is the wrong Authentic. Not the authentic Authentic.

Wrong Authentic. This is the right one:

I think we posted at the same time

As far as critique, this looks like a milers pedigree to me. If heā€™s getting the distance from pedigree, its in the very bottom line of it, through Wild Again and In Reality, but, if I recall correctly, they descended from milers. I suspect the old rules just donā€™t apply as much any more.

Oh wow, my bad, sorry, I guess I got so distracted by the variety of ā€œhorse nationalitiesā€ in that pedigree of the inauthentic Authentic, that I forgot to look at the date of birth!
The ā€œrealā€ Authentic has names I am not familiar with-- I am only a casual reader of pedigrees, not a knowledgeable one, but I do find it interesting. His sire seems to have had a racing career of 6 starts-- 3 wins and 3 second places-- and is also the 2019 Leading Sire in North America and 2018 Leading Sire of Juveniles in 2018 with a stud fee of 150,000 k, up from an initial fee of 12,000 k. Now THAT is an interesting story in itself. Going to see what more I can find on the sire. https://www.pedigreequery.com/into+mischief

I remember yesterday hearing some of the TVG personalities mentioning that they were not sure if Authentic could go the 1 1/4 mile distance.

One reason I love horse racingā€¦ you can handicap all you want using all the different strategiesā€¦ equipment changes, past performance, pedigree, Thorograph, Beyer, coat color, you name it and the race still needs to be run to find out who is ā€˜bestā€™ with the best ride and best circumstances on that day

Into Mischief is the top U.S stallion with currently just under 12M in earnings for 2020 (a rather huge amount for a partially curtailed year). So far this year, he has sired 23 SWrs, 9 GSWrs, and 2 G1 winners.
