Triple Crown races 2024 - KY Derby (& Oaks) - Who's following?

I didn’t ‘have a horse in this race.’ (I liked Forever Young in the Kentucky Derby.) For this race, I liked Just Steel, because I liked Just F Y I and Hard To Justify in the Breeders’ Cup races, despite NEVER liking their sire, Justify. And I decided to really root for Seize The Day because of the My Racehorse and some of the “little” owners (30-50) present. They were Just So Happy to be there.

So, I started screaming for Seize The Day around the final turn and until he crossed the finish line. I wished that there had been a camera on the group above as he won. :slightly_smiling_face:

Seize the Grey definitely seized the day! It ended up not being as bad weather wise as I had feared. We had an amazing time like always. Am already looking forward to the last Preakness at Pimlico next year.

Shoot. One not available in my location, the other subscription only: oh well …

I watched the NBC sports replay free on Youtube, before the next videos were the walk to the winner’s circle, and the presentation, but they seem to have moved. .

I’m tickled pink for all the MRH shareholders. :grinning:

Congrats to Seize the Grey! What a nice horse. I love when they’re in that steel gray stage.

Once again, my non-horsey family came out on top. Dad got the exacta: $400. I lost money. :joy: Was still hoping Catching Freedom would pull through.

I’d have better luck giving up handicapping and just picking via name!

I thought it was a great race. the top 3 were all running back on short notice. I know the McPeek camp isn’t thrilled with Dan’s finish but I thought Dan ran tremendous given the conditions. Thought he was placed a little too far back in the opening half, maybe if he was slightly closer to the lead it would’ve been more of a match race at the end.

Seize the Grey has a lot of talent. It is his fourth race in about 2 months. Not sure how I feel about that but it worked for him.

For those wondering, here is his yearling photo

and here is his yearling Video

Sierra Leone was the sale topper at the same sale. Here is his yearling photo and video

I think Mystik Dan really needs the lead much like Fierceness. I was a little surprised he did as well as he did all things considered.

Jingles for Kaymarie and Hunter, Hunter was injured in a trailer accident after the Preakness.

Of course he is running.

If the horse is sound and fit, why not?* I’m actually kinda pleased to see it. I miss the days when the Triple Crown was a showdown of the top 3yros in the country in three straight races–we got great rivalries like Sunday Silences vs. Easy Goer, and we got to see Derby winners go on to compete even when a Triple Crown wasn’t on the line, or a Derby placed horse go on to sweep the other two races in dominant fashion. Ferdinand, Winning Colors, Genuine Risk, Risen Star, Point Given…it was fun to see the same players come back to try again. DWL has never been my favorite, but I’m happy to see this older school approach.

*That is the big asterisk: If the horse is sound and fit.

You say that like it’s a bad thing :woman_shrugging:
Unless there’s an issue with the horse, why wouldn’t you give it a go?

I apologize. My intense dislike of Lucas overcame my courtesy.

He does dance every dance regardless of how appropriate, doesn’t he?

Congratulations to Jaime A Torres who was unanimously voted Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week May 13-19!! :horse_racing::clap:

Jaime Torres started his riding career at Gulfstream Park in August of 2022 and earned his first win at Gulfstream on September 17th, 2022 aboard Takestwotowiggle. Less than 2 years after taking out his jockey license Jamie Torres has 147 wins and has ridden in 4 graded stakes races, winning 2 of them!

Riding in his first Triple Crown race at the age of 25, Torres took Seize the Grey to the lead on a muddy sealed track at Pimlico for trainer D. Wayne Lukas running the first quarter in 23.89 and lead throughout the backstretch. At the top of the stretch, #KyDerby winner Mystik Dan was trying to pass on the outside but Torres aboard Seize the Grey dug in and held off rivals to win by an impressive 2 1/4 lengths in the $2 Million G1 Preakness Stakes!

“I thought Torres had a lot of talent and I loved working with him” said trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

Jaime Torres will be aboard Seize the Grey in the last leg of the Triple Crown in the G1 Belmont Stakes at Saratoga on June 8th!
