Puca had another Good Magic foal this year. Will be interesting to see what happens with that one.
They’re a year apart. Her 2020 foal Mage won the 2023 Kentucky Derby, and her 2021 foal is Dornoch, winner of the 2024 Belmont.
Sierra Leone was practically on his knees coming out of the gate, and he appeared to have horses move into him on the first turn, and coming into the stretch. Really a tough out for that boy.
Thanks for sharing this, quite amusing. I didn’t watch any of the regular broadcast this year so I can’t fairly compare but sure seems like they didn’t fix the sound issue at all. Which is really pretty crazy that a network that broadcasts so many sporting events can’t get that right!
Born and raised in NJ I was cringing. As I often do during the nation anthem while wondering “is she going to hit the high notes?”
What happened with Seize the Gray? I thought his stride was off (dressage rider point of view) and he faded so dramatically to finish second to last.
I like the singer, can’t spell her name, too lazy to look it up, but she was atrocious. I was mostly watching Bromont, and had I been watching all day, I woud have probably watched TVG. Coverage was OK, but I think a network that covers all sports is just not gonna do it for us die hard fans. They are trying to draw in non racing fans. NBC is much better than they used to be, but I do prefer to just talking about the racing stuff, not julips and hats.
She did a hell of a job on “Let it Go”, but Idina Menzel was just horrible today.
Seize The Grey ran some pretty fast early fractions. I think he just got tired; he’s run 3x in five weeks even though he didn’t run in the Derby.
Curious to see how these 3 year olds mature over the summer and come back after a bit of rest.
I was wondering that too, looked like he just ran outta steam
He was just tired.
He’s ran 6 times this year already, 5 of those races in 11 weeks. Along with running some quick fractions.
He beat Mystic Dan LOL.
He dove right & then left out of the gate & then proceeded to travel all over the track.
He’s a menace & is going to cause an accident or worse.
Watch the replay starting at 3:04. He was run into twice, the first time right after coming out of the starting gate when he was recovering from a stumble.
You could tell when warming up, he was flat, didn’t have a spring in his feet.
I was wondering if he was maturing, was coming down with something or just was a bit tired.
He did great, just was tired at the end, others were still fresh and kicked on, the winner really found one more faster gear before others did.
He was just outrun.
I hope you are right
I agree with you, some times as he was moving along his stride felt off behind, but when they are being led or ponied, that happens also, not necessarily something wrong, just being checked back footfalls get uneven.
Agreed - by the quarter pole he was clearly done… time for some R&R.
But then he also reverted to his usual bearing in behavior - despite the Houghton. Honor Marie REALLY got crunched at the start - again.
I was so bummed about Honor Marie. SUCH a bad trip, got bashed into multiple times. Still came in 4th though which is amazing. I was rooting for him because he’s practically a full brother to my horse.
If you ever get the chance to go to Saratoga and walk the backside, you should. It is known as “the Spa” for a reason. it is very park-like.
I watched on FS1 with their regular broadcast crew. They had a few technical difficulties throughout the day which is unheard of for them but overall their commentators and interviewrs are horse people, trainers, jockeys, and horse bettors. So they know the game well and give an inside view of the race and the horses that channels like NBC and Fox do not have.
My only complaint is I can’t stand listening to Andy Serling on that broadcast, no matter the day. I understand he is a Mary Lou Whitney Award winner and a trusted handicapper and a genuine New Yorker, but the guy just loves to hear himself talk and any analysis done pre race; he seems to be the only one who’s right; and afterwards its a complete never-ending analysis of why his favorite horse didn’t make it happen.
Quite honestly I had to turn off the broadcast after the race because it was 10 minutes of Sierra Leone coverage and why he didn’t win instead of giving the tremendous nod to Dornoch for his run and the tremendous run by Mindframe
As for Sierra Leone, he hit the gate hard and then played bumper cars with the horses around him. Overhead shot of him still showed him lugging in a bit the closer he got to the wire. I wonder if its a symptom of fatigue for him; not just training. I think he is still green as grass and might turn out like Gun Runner who had a tremendous 4 year old year but never quite got the job done as a 3 yr old
Mystik Dan and Sieze the Grey looked exhausted. I can understand why the connections wanted to run, I mean, having a horse in the Belmont! but both horses should’ve sat this one out.
