Triple Crown races 2024 - KY Derby (& Oaks) - Who's following?

I liked Sierra Leon as well because the protagonist in one of my favorite book series is of Sierra Leon descent. My horse picking methods are very scientific.

It looks like Sierra Leone’s jock is trying to keep him from lugging in and really bumping. See his outside rein.

One horse in the race, track phantom, was owned in part by tulsa crim defense attorney, c.brewster, who has been bafferts defense counsel on more than one occasion. Don’t think I can use full name. It looked to me that horse had not run in very many Gr1 races.but I dont know for certain.

Yeah, I saw that too! I thought there would be a claim of foul, Forever Young against Sierra Leone. I wonder if the Japanese jockey knew what the procedure is to claim foul. Has he ridden in the U.S., anyone know? Are the procedures universal?

I was rooting for Mystic Dan because that’s my DH’s name and someone once described something he did at work as being “mystical, nonsensical, algorithmic, and opaque”. So Mystik Dan lol

I’m sure they know the rules. I would think that the Japanese connections might find it poor sportsmanship to lodge a protest. Just a guess.

Suspect that might be part of it. But FY was not yielding an inch, stood his ground, maybe shoved back. Tough horse, gutsy first KD effort for the jockey. SL hurt his own chances, had he stayed straight, he might have won.

Me, too…

I don’t understand why people would assume that the Japanese connections would be ignorant of the rules. They have raced horses in many countries, they aren’t newbies.

Another reason for me to celebrate Mystik Dan, his owners are from Arkansas and I think originally from my home town of Texarkana.

Forever Young’s jock had an unusual riding style, I thought.

I like that Mystik Dan’s second dam is by Siphon, a talented and tough runner in the older male dirt stakes in the mid-90s. I really enjoyed watching him run.

I really liked the bits with the great-granddaughter of Rosa Hoots (and the footage of Black Gold!), and the great-grandson of Oliver Lewis.

And inside leg! Lol

Is that the one that looked like he was posting the gallop?

I didn’t love the way Track Phantom plowed into Forever Young’s shoulder at the start.

I didn’t watch all of the races today. Did everyone come home safe?

So glad that the Derby went well.

This has no bearing on racing ability, but I always have a fondness for race horses who do comical things with their tongues. Yes I am a giant and super fast but I like to suck on my tongue or stick it out. It’s so endearingly kooky I love it.

I’ve known some TBs and they were not racing TBs, who loved to stick out their tongues and have you grasp their tongue and hold it, not pull, but just hold it.
Why, I have no idea. It always seemed to me that to them, it was like their equine version of holding hands with a human, but who knows?

Exactly.
