since I don’t follow like I used to, I was surprised to see the Belmont is going to be on FOX. Is it because they seem to be doing all NY racing or is that my imagination?
Not so sure about that.
I do hope it goes back to Belmont and back to one mile and one-half.
Is there a reason you think it wouldn’t?
Money. Maybe the new Belmont Park will draw a lot of people, maybe not. Saratoga does.
There is no way that Belmont Park is going to lose the Belmont. The only way it moves anywhere is if racing no longer exists at Belmont. I am confident this is the second and last Belmont to be run at Saratoga in my lifetime. Which is why we are going
Really keen to watch this race, maybe even moreso than the Preakness. I think we’re gonna get a clearer idea of who top of this crop is now that’s not equine pinball out of the gate like Churchill.
I’m going to root for Baeza. Really because I’m rooting for Puca
For the Baeza fans, this made me laugh: https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/284947/for-baeza-home-is-where-the-carrot-smoothie-is
I have two mares who think carrots are poison, wonder if this would win them over?!
Didn’t realize until I double-checked that the Belmont was this weekend (how has it been 3 weeks?)
Hoping Journalism pulls off another win but the Belmont being run at a mile and a quarter instead of a mile and a half feels so weird. I know they’re doing work on Belmont Park and that’s why it’s at Saratoga but still.
Some marketing department somewhere is referring to it as Belmontoga. They’re selling hats and everything.
There should be some good races! I’m looking forward to watching.
I’m working at my club’s dressage show, but looks like the day will end early enough that I can watch. Yay!!
Coolmore fillies Minnie Hauk (Frankel) and Whirl (Wootton Bassett) finish 1-2 in the Epsom Oaks over 12 furlongs. 1000 Guineas winner Desert Flower was 3rd.
Epsom Derby is tomorrow, current favorite is Coolmore’s Delacroix, a son of US champion grass mare Tepin. I loved Tepin so am definitely hoping her boy brings it home.
Watching some of the Turf races at Toga these last two days; the grass looks really good right now despite the amount of rain the area has had this spring. That might likely change if they get the heavy storms this afternoon and any significant rain tomorrow
Ways and Means just destroyed the field in the Bed O Roses. Just missed the track record as well.
Hopefully just an off day or dislike of the surface for Good Cheer and she’s alright, she looked flat
Delacroix finished 9th in the Epsom Derby, never really looking engaged at all. Ruling Court, the 2000 Guineas winner, was a late scratch, with trainer Charlie Appleby citing the ground as too soft for the colt’s liking.
Lambourn (Australia out of a Scat Daddy mare) grabbed the lead early and won by 3 lengths. He is a Coolmore homebred, partnered by jockey Wayne Lordan.
It was Lordan’s first Derby win in nine tries; he’s Ballydoyle’s second call rider behind Ryan Moore. I’m sure riding second for Aidan O’Brien is a dream gig for most jockeys, but after years of seeing horses he’s ridden to a win (Los Angeles is one) go to Moore for subsequent starts, it’s got to be particularly gratifying. I know that’s how the system works, but still.
The Jaipur & Manhattan moved to Sunday’s card.
With all other turf races moved to the main track.
Looking forward to the Met Mile. I’ll be rooting for White Abarrio.
No favorite for the Belmont. Hoping for a good, competitive race.
Fox is doing such a good job broadcasting of the undercard. Their commentators discuss the horses and racing very well. So refreshing after NBC’s disappointing coverage.
I’m glad they took those races off the turf.
