Trumbull Mountain Tack - Has Anyone Had A Positive Experience Consigning A Saddle?

I was introduced to Trumbull Mountain years ago when I was looking for a saddle for my hard to fit gelding. It was a great experience - a long distance fitting and ended up with a great fitting, beautiful used BC Eloquence X that suited us at the time. Happy days.

Fast forward a couple of years and said saddle needs to be sold. I decided to send it back to TM to be consigned, in part because I remembered what I great experience I had when purchasing this saddle from them. So about a year ago, I sent it back - and figured it could take awhile to sell - no big deal there at all.

My saddle sold in September (confirmed sold via email), and I am expecting a check now as their policy is to send a check by the end of the month after the month in which the saddle sold - which would mean the check would’ve been cut by the end of October. It is now Nov. 8. I’ve written 2 emails to confirm a check was indeed sent and they have not been responded to. Phone calls are next. Who has time for this kind of garbage.

But now, unfortunately I am reading horrible experiences from people who consigned their saddles- who have waited forever to get a check, well beyond the TM policy, and some have even bounced when they did eventually get it.

Based on these stories, I’m getting nervous that I am not going to get said check, not without a fight and much time wasted. And it sounds like even if I do, it could bounce.

So I must ask - does anyone have a positive experience in which Trumbull Mountain sold your saddle and you received a (good) check in a timely manner? Please let me know and allow me to set my fears aside. I’m hoping not to be lumped into the group of people who have been duped by this company, but I’m not finding any happy reviews from consignors…

I can’t wait to come back here with a happy update…

I hope you get your money! I had heard from a former employee that they have gone a bit downhill in recent years. :frowning: I had a very similar experiance as yours a few years ago. Amazing service and a long distance fit for my horse that resulted in a saddle that looked just about custom made for him.

Sometimes things actually do get lost in the mail. If you’ve waited a reasonable time, can you call and request that they stop payment on the original check and use PayPal or another instant transfer method?

Mailing checks seems like a really silly way to be doing distance consignments in this day and age.

Sometimes giving them an easy alternative makes them a bit more receptive to complaints. I’d be phoning and sending emails daily at this point, tbh, until they gave me a very firm time line for resolution. Depending on the amount, a letter and phone call from a lawyer can be about $250. A targeted social media campaign is a free, but sometimes less successful option. I’ve never used that one, but hAve friends who’ve gotten very quick resolutions with strategic twitter or instagram complaints.

I hope it works out for you.

Thanks, Rugbygirl - if it comes to that I will definitely be taking these suggestions.

Let’s hope it does not. Right now I’m just looking for someone to come forward with a (farily recent) positive experience that involved them consigning their saddle through Trumbull Mountain.

No experience with them but I think they are members here on coth. Drawing a blank on their screen name though.

P.

Perhaps paying a lawyer to send them a letter stating send the money that is due to you or see you in small claims court would make things go quicker. Doesn’t appear there are any good ending stories out there.

I am going to give the benefit of the doubt through November. I will call and email, and assume that sometimes things happen when mailing from East Coast to West Coast. But yes, if needed I will do it. Already researching the person to be my advocate.

And still…no one has come forward with a positive experience.:frowning: Anyone???

jaybird660 is the name.

Not trying to take over the thread, but if TM is so bad, anyone have suggestions of any good places to sell your saddle? (I had good experiences over the years with TM, but if things have changed, I’m never going back.)

Pelham Saddlery is another option. https://www.pelham-saddlery.com/

Well, having still been ignored, a friend suggested I send a complaint to the BBB. Within 10 minutes of them saying they sent my complaint out to TM, I got an email from Rich

I will keep everyone posted with the outcome of this.

I’m sorry to read of those experiences. I bought a saddle from them years ago and it was a very positive experience.

I have bought a couple of saddles from Middleburg Tack Exchange.

If I were going to consign a saddle I’d probably send it to them.

I consigned a saddle with them. It took about a month and several follow up emails but I did get a check sent with a tracking number.

I, too, had a less than stellar consignment experience with TM. I eventually did get a check, but communication was…poor. This was several years ago, just after the shop moved in December 2012.

Interesting that the BBB actually did anything for you! I had the same problems with them sending me a check and I went to the BBB and they wouldn’t help me. They said I could put a bad review on their website…
I finally got a check after putting a bad review on Trumbull mountains Facebook page and threatening a lawyer, and going after the full selling price. They deleted their Facebook page after I put up the review…

Classic. See my post above. It’s amazing how fast money is found when your find the right sort of leverage.

What’s hard to accept is that 1) It was your call to the BB and not anything else that did the trick. So you don’t count; ethics don’t count; this very public discussion of the “slow pay” doesn’t count; a member of that store being an active poster on this BB doesn’t count; COTH being a place that has been a nice conduit for their business doesn’t count…

See what I’m saying? I hope you get your money. I hope everyone else sees how little they will count should they need to collect from Trumbull Mountain Tack. If you don’t appreciate that you, too, might not have much power, then know that you will have to spend some time and effect on collecting what you are owed. Debt collection is such a PITA job. I don’t know why anyone would sign up for that.

Not consignment but I had a very positive fitting experience with Trumbull Mountain in the last few weeks. Both Rich and Jay were very helpful and very prompt with calls back, emails, etc.

Interesting. All I did was fill out the complaint form on BBB’s website- didn’t take more than a couple of minutes to do. There were similar complaints on their page as well. Within minutes I had confirmation and a notice from BBB that they forwarded it on to the business, and then a matter of minutes from that point to be contacted by Trumbull mountain.

This was the same experience I had when I was purchasing the saddle. Jay was incredibly helpful and had quite the skill in matching my horse and I up with he right saddle. Thus, when it was time to sell, I didn’t think twice to send it to them to consign.

yup, it is sad. I found out about TM through COTH and had a really great experience purchasing a saddle that was on consignment. Like I said above, Jay was very helpful and found the right match for my horse and I from across the country. I was impressed and quite thankful because I was struggling with finding the right fit up until then.

Now the trust is gone. I need to fit another to another horse and I can’t go to TM…because even if they do have another perfect match, how can I enable them to potentially screw the owner of that saddle, knowing what happened/is happening to me.

i hope it does all work smoothly from here on out. It is a shame that it had to get even this far.

Id still like to find at least one person who had a positive, smooth experience selling their saddle through TM. It would make me feel better.
