Turn Out Sheets Best Bang For your Buck?

Well, yesterday while hauling hay to a secondary feet lot the tack room on the trailer was broken into while I used the restroom at a gas statio:( Now… these people must have been targeting cause they only took 2 things… 2 of my turnout sheets… I don’t know… I mean I had 3 saddles in this thing that went untouched and some nice silver ranch bits ha. Must not have been horse people maybe. Hate having a trailer so old it has no locks.

Anyway now I have to get some new ones, (been told odds are I wont get my sheets back, Yada Yada) So now I have to hunt for some decent ones that are not going to explode my piggy bank.

I need turnout sheets, nothing with fill just something that will break the wind and rain. These sheets need to be durable as they come, I mean it. They are used in full turnout, 24/7. They have their turnout blankets for when it gets cold, but fall is a wet, and windy season for us here. The stronger these sheets are, the better.

I have around 140 total to spend on these at this point in time. I live in the middle of no where so going out to buy is not an option for me… I have to buy most of my stuff online.

I like to keep these two marked apart by color, for when our not so horsy friend animal sits (color coding works so well ha. Red blanket to paint, blue to bay)

So does anyone have any recommendations? These are QH mares that are a respectable 75 and 78 in their Weatherbeetas. The mare in the 78 having a bit wider of a shoulder than the mare in the 75.

Any suggestions are amazing and I thank all who look.

I don’t have a specific blanket suggestion, but Chicks’s Saddlery was just having a awesome blanket sale. I just bought two nice quality turnout blankets for under $100 from them for my skinny new equine.

I have looked at Chicks, but most of the blankets in my range of price are Tough 1s… and after our last incident with a blanket of that brand we stay away like it is the plague.

Any opinions on Saxons? I hear they run short down the sides. Has anyone tried upping the blanket size to compensate for this?

Love love love Schneiders’ 80gm fill sheet! Incredibly versatile.

Search seller “tackmarket” on ebay. I bought a 1680D turnout sheet from them last year and even with the blanket biter (seriously, this horse tries ripping sheets/blankets off) outside, they have only tiny pinholes I need to repair.

It looks like they don’t carry the 1680D this year, but do have 2000D now for around $75. They run a bit big lengthwise, at least on my 15.3h TB mare, and side coverage is more than adequate. I used to use Saxons and yes, they are like mini-skirts.

lol I thank you now for the image of my huge bay in a Min skirt lol

I’ll take a look at them, I feel I have heard of that seller before, a lot of good things! Just out of curiosity, do these blankets have a Velcro front with the buckles?

No kidding!! I bought these last year on a whim and used them extensively. Loved them!

Do you have a link to these? I can not seem to find them for the life of me. I am liking their prices and the looks on these sheets. May I ask how they fit? run large or small?

Here’s one that’s offered:

The one I bought last year was on closeout and isn’t available anymore, looks like. But it’s a great weight.

Oh, and I thought the ss tack stuff ran very true to size based on how they want you to measure.

Yes, velcro front with buckles. The hardware/attachments seem a bit flimsy but have held up well.

The Saxons barely covered the sides on my mare and she is not bulky by any means. I don’t see them covering well at all on a QH!

Oh man if those were in my price range I would snag them up!

Thank you! I am looking into that seller now, just have to weed out the no fill sheets hehe

Kensington also makes a lightweight blanket/heavy sheet:

http://www.horse.com/item/kensington-all-around-hd-80g-turnout/E012965/

I’ve not had a Kensington blanket in years, but I liked them quite a bit when I did use them.

I haven’t actually done research this season, but I was on ValleyVet site for other reasons and thought their many different brands offered were really nice prices. You might just want to take a look at valleyvet and see if something catches your eye. I thought very nice prices and selection. Maybe better elswhere, if so, others will let us know, but this looked pretty good to me. I’m about to call my lessor and find out if my horse needs a new med or heav winter blanket.

For the money, I’ve been happy with my Wetherbeeta Genero sheet and turnout blanket. I bought them 2 years ago for a horse I wasn’t sure I was going to keep, and have ended up using them daily throughout the past two seasons. I paid about $70 for the sheet and $80 for the medium-weight blanket. They are 1200 denier, generous drop, no frills (regular chest buckles, no Velcro, basic sewn-in leg straps), but tough as nails. Neither one has even hinted at leaking. I’m typically a Horseware gal, but I have to say the Genero sheet and blanket are going head-to-head with my Horseware clothing and performing just as well.

That Kensington comes in a 1680 version too, I got one last year and it is my favorite blanket. Best part is that it snaps on in about ten seconds.

But it wasn’t cheap, even one is going to be over OP’s budget. In that range, I would haunt closeout pages right now. This would be a good choice: http://www.adamshorsesupplies.com/saxon-1200d-turnout-sheet-closeout-203836#92=2079

We love these blankets! Have both the sheets and medium fill. http://www.sstack.com/horse-blankets-and-sheets_waterproof-turnout-blankets_fitted-v-free/stormshield-new-brition-bellyband-turnouts/

Oh, I totally missed that the OP has $140 to spend total–read that as $140 to spend EACH. $70 a sheet is sure going to be tough this time of year!

http://www.sstack.com/horse-blankets-and-sheets_waterproof-turnout-sheets_classic-euro/dura-tech-1200d-viking-turnout-sheet/

Here’s a sheet that’s actually in the OP’s price range. As mentioned before, Schneider’s blankets run very true to size, based on measurement (Weatherbeatas run a little large, IME, so you may have to drop down a size). I bought this particular sheet one winter when a yearling colt in my gelding’s pasture ribbed the entire hind end out of my horse’s more expensive sheet while playing. For the price, this is a good sheet. I ended up giving mine to a friend when I was able to buy a more expensive model (I prefer belly bands), and it’s still going strong seven years later, used exclusively on horses who are out 24/7.

I have my crew all decked out in Weatherbeetas. Sheets and medium weight for winter. They seem to wear well and for the most part they don’t abuse their neighbour’s blanket.

I was lucky to get most of mine on sale at Horseloverz.
