Two-knot hairnets?

Confession time: I am kind of old fashioned when it comes to equipment. I’m slowly, slowly, slowly coming around to sock-bottom breeches, for example. I still ride in an antique 1992 Butet.

So please take my word for it when I say I am not looking to modernize my hairnets at this time.

Unfortunately, it looks like perhaps everyone else is! I am struggling to find the old Aerborn heavyweight two-knot hairnets at any of my usual tack stores. Did this brand go out of business? Is anyone else making a comparable product? Googling has revealed a few stores with limited inventory. Do I need to be buying them all out now and hoarding at this point?

I know many of you love the one-knots, the no-knots, the ponytail varieties. But I really do want the old ones. If I can find them.

Thanks for any advice!

Signed,
Touchstone, who lives for that forehead divot.

I have no advice for you. All I see online are no-knot or one-knot varieties. I do have a question for you, though.

Do you not get headaches with the two-knot kinds? I’m not showing and have (gasp) stopped using hairnets entirely because my sensitive noggin can’t handle the extra bulk of not needed… even with no knots. I have a healthy supply on hand for showing and clinics, but don’t bother day-to-day anymore. And I most certainly do not miss the old fashioned kinds. They give me a headache & numb forehead just thinking about them.

Just curious…

I liked these too because I have a lot of hair and nothing else tames the bulk. When I busted my last one at Saratoga last year, I was told by the woman at FarmVet that they’re no longer being made. Sure enough, haven’t been able to find them online either. She told me the one knot kind would be the closest match, and it sort of is, but I find them flimsier and burn through them at a much faster rate.

I think this kind has 2 knots… https://www.statelinetack.com/item/ovation-deluxe-hair-net-2pk/E048162%20MBR/?&srccode=GPSLT&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6uWyBhD1ARIsAIMcADqSKLBY-UH2briLpwNKtbutx7cNaQmj9MHZ2YjjkNddt8AtnzIt8EsaAgu7EALw_wcB

They are still out there at a lot of tack shops! https://riders-boutique.com/products/beval-heavy-weight-hair-nets

The hairnet is not supposed to get between your forehead and the helmet. Push it up in front so it is behind the start of your hair, then put the helmet on back to front. Wait until you get the helmet pulled down to put the net at the right height on your ear, it should sit below while you do the ponytail and put on the helmet, then pop it up to just above the lobe as you tuck in wispies.

I want to echo @CBoylen. I was making a joke about the forehead divot. I wear the front knot above my hairline. I have thick, curly hair, and the V shape created by the front knot just does a much better job of enclosing my hair than the one-knot version. And, because I wear it pulled up a little, it actually means less material between my helmet and forehead, not more. If I do that with the one-knot version, my hair is a mess.

Thanks for the referrals, guys. I think it is time to start hoarding…

I’m a convert to those Real Women Ride hairnets to the point where I use them for schooling but I am here to say the thought of your '92 Butet still in use makes my heart full.

The bulk of my breeches are puke green TS, for what it’s worth.

I consider myself a relatively intelligent person, but I cannot for the life of me get those things to work. No idea what I am doing wrong! :woman_shrugging:

Following because I’m almost out of all of my old stock of the heavy duty 2 knot ones. I did recently get a one knot for showing, and it’s ok when my hair is straightened. But you can’t get by so much when the elastic stretches out. And they made their dark blond/light brown one rather green colored. Like, no one possibly has that actual hair color unless they had a major oops with fashion colors.

I admit that some days I feel like I’ve got it down and other days, it’s like I’m trapped in it

I watched the video. A lot. And practiced at home because I need that so I don’t panic when I’m late for a lesson or stumbling around at a show.

I do not use an elastic on the first, low pony step, however. My hair is roughly shoulder-length and not so crazy that I can’t manage it.

Yeah I do it kind of similar to the way it sounds like you do, too. I skip the initial ponytail holder, just pull the RWR on like a headband and pull all the way down over my hair, THEN put it all in a ponytail and flip up like normal.

A-HA!!! Thank you for the link! I still feel silly, but I think maybe I get it now. I will prob have to do the low pony first, since a big part of the problem I was having was the net pulling all my thin/fine hair up with it. Then nothing was over (or even near) my ears.

Yeah! To me the elastic is like an extra bunchy thing back there when you’ve got your helmet on. Without it, it seems easier to kind of pull the back of your hair and net down and outward a tiny bit, if that makes any sense. That always seems to settle my helmet at “just right.”

Me too

I also love the no-knots, and you can get a knock off version on amazon if you search for “wig cap hair nets”. They come in a pack of 3 for like $5 usually.

I get that everyone’s hair and head shape is different, but for me with a long oval head and fine shoulder length hair, the no-knots are the easiest for me. I put it on like others have described, like a headband and then I pull it up over my hair. I don’t usually do a ponytail. Then once it’s pulled up on top of my head, I can pull my hair down on the sides over my ears (through the net), until I get it to look the way I want. Or if I’m schooling I just don’t worry about that step. My helmet feels so much more comfortable because the hair can kind of fan out on my scalp versus creating a pressure point with a ponytail.

@Equibrit Is there a model here that you’d recommend as most similar to the Aerborns I love?

Has anyone tried Ellsworth hairnets?

I bought these 2 knot hairnets from Amazon: Hair Nets 24PCS Brown Invisible Elastic Edge Thicker Mesh Hair Net for Bun Hair Bun Kitchen Food Serive Sleeping Bun Nets for Ballet

They don’t last forever, but they’re cheap and you get a lot of them!

Oh, and put the knots by your ears. Really.
