Uh oh! Need to pick an eventing stallion IMMEDIATELY!

I’m the type who plans and plans and plans… And mentally picked Jumbo for my mare months ago, but didn’t get the semen reserved early enough and he is sold out… My loss!

Then I became preoccupied with my mare’s impending foaling. Suddenly the foal just arrived, and now that I’m not on foal watch 24-7, after my first night of real sleep, I realized that I still haven’t pinpointed one man for my lady! I know there have been eventing threads on stallions before, but I’d really like some quick brainstorming on my specific mare.

I am really lucky—accidentally stumbled upon a mare for sale last fall who is the dam of my advanced level event horse! She is only 13 years old, so not incredibly old and has had several foals, including one gorgeous filly yesterday. (Hooray!)

The mare is about 16.2h, a really nice size and type. The gelding I have out of her, my upper level eventer, is stamped with almost everything from her and little from the sire. She is a full thoroughbred. My guy has a less-than-fab TB trot, but an amazing canter and outstanding jump. My GP dressage coach calls him a “collection freak”.

I need to choose a daddy soon! I am breeding for a future advanced level horse, hopefully. I don’t mind if it’s a pro ride–I plan on keeping it. I don’t care about size/color. I am hoping to create a baby that is a good mover and a great jumper, and bred to be an upper level event horse (and a horse of a lifetime!).

Catherston Dazzler.

Catherston Dazzler is an excellent match for a TB mare and has produced double-digits of CCI**** eventers from this cross. CD babies are athletic and attractive, capable of excelling in all 3 phases.

My 7 year-old mare is CD’s first-born North American foal – I imported the semen myself before EMCO started repping him and bred her out of my full TB mare. She’s a lovely horse in every way and just ended her first season of eventing with a 3rd place finish in the Area 3 Prelim Horse Championships.

Another CD baby, Midnight Dazzler, finished 10th at Badminton last week, the top-placing horse to finish on his dressage score. Quite an achievement, but even more so given that he’s 19 years old and has been consistent at CCI**** level for ten years.

Here’s a short clip of Midnight Dazzler at Badminton last week. My own mare looks exactly like this – and so do the rest of the CD offspring.

I can’t say enough good things about this stallion. He really stamps his get and if you want a super athlete that can jump and gallop all day and move well enough to win the dressage, you’ll get it from him.

I also like denny’s Irish stallion Formula One but have only seen photos/video.

Oh, HHFarm, I have one straw of Jumbo left…just short cycled my mare to get her cultured this week & will try on the next cycle.

After HB won at Rolex I thought about selling it on eBay but decided not to. (J/K, sorta)

Fairview: I wish I could go back to his sire! You are absolutely right. Sadly, the sire is deceased. My guy is a full TB. Her foal this year is by Monarchos (TB racehorse) and is really adoreable, but I don’t think I’d be able to do $10k a pop for a breeding!

Are you interested in limiting the field to particular breeds or registries? Is your mare already approved with a breeding registry? Previous foals full TB or crosses?

Lots of good stallions to choose from. Do you want to stay with fresh semen or are you adventurous enough to try frozen?

Your mare looks to have a bit of an upright hind end so I would avoid stallions who are too straight behind. The added angeling to the hind might improve your trot as well.

Serious Eventers

I have TB broodmares that have some of New Zealand’s best eventing blood. They are the result of a concerted effort to breed superior eventers. I am blessed with having bred some super-serious movement into these mares but even then, to be competitive at the top, todays eventers need a bit of warmblood. It gives them an edge in the dressage and SJ (stadium). But don’t overdo the warmblood bit… a little goes a long way! :yes: Too much, and the endurance and guts of the TB gets too diluted, and the result is a stodgy looking working hunter with no grit.

Based on this, something like Catherston Dazzler would fit the bill. He certainly has a breeding/competing track record that’s hard to beat. Personally I’d go for something slightly fancier such as His Highness but that’s just me.

What about this guy… Salute The Truth. I was considering him to cross on my Dressage/Eventer Trakehner mare for my daughter’s future mount. I liked him alot (even though I’m a Hunter)… His trot is very nice and his gallop is steady and Q-U-I-C-K.

I was trying to refine my mare, yet add height (she is only 15.3h) speed and scope. Plus, he’s a TB which it sounds like you would prefer. He’s done well at the CCI*** level, have to look up his get as I’m not sure of their rankings… I mean *** isn’t bad plus he wasn’t pushed, he could do ****. Plus, his stud fee is VERY reasonable!

Just a thought. Roc USA.

My colt is by him out of a pretty flighty TB mare and he is fantastic. Brave as ever and moves really well. He will just pick up a canter in the arena and start jumping jumps by himself. Great brain and is already 15.1 at 13 months old.

Roc USA has Idocus (grand prix dressage horse) and Galoubet ( big time jumper, sired Rodrigo Pessoa’s horse that won a World Cup) blood along with TB blood, so I would expect he could sire a great eventer.

Out of the babies I have seen they are very level headed and smart and all have the best canters. (of course they all jump amazing) Some are showing in the hunters and most are in the jumpers, some already winning in the young jumpers classes against all the top European bred babies!

Just a thought, I was really happy with him crossed with my TB mare and he seems like a great sire to use for an eventing type.

Another one that comes to mind is Gatsby. He has some good jumping blood and his offspring seem to be doing well.

I know this seems out of the blue, but what about Yeager GF? I bred my TB mare to him with some reservations, since he is still unproven, and I have to say, I’m pleasantly surprised with how well this cross turned out. I have had another established event breeder look at him and she thought he was nicer than some of her foals. He had definitely elevated the neck placement of my mare as well as putting some serious legs on him. He is also extremely short coupled, which was something I hoped to improve in my mare. Many people have been very impressed by the self-awareness he has in terms of his legs.

Here is a picture of him at 4 days old with momma in the background and, as you can tell, he already as presence. (Excuse my my mare, she is a bit older at 16 and things don’t bounce back as quickly. ;))

Not to mention, Anne Johnson is a DREAM to work with and has bent over backwards for several mare owners to get semen to them on time despite the short notice. Always a valuable trait in a stallion owner.

I have a Royal Appearance mare, her dam was by Grannus. She’s an absolutly lovely ride. She was injured during weaning, so she’s only sound for light riding (she’s a broodmare). She freejumps very well, unfortunatly she was injured during weaning, so isn’t sound for lots of work, but if I leave a jump set up in the arena from another horse, chances are that she will find it herself. I do have to say that her walk needs improvement, not sure if that was from Royal Appearance or the dam though. Very nice trot and canter though. You often hear a lot about Riverman temperments being tough, she is NOT like that at all. I’ve heard nothing but good about Royal Appearance’s temperment and that of his offspring. His stud fee is very reasonable as well

I’ve seen him in person quite a few times at Edgar’s, and he is a beautiful boy. I think he’s sired some successful event horses too. I’m actually breeding my Royal Appearance mare to him this year. He’s got a super pedigree too

There are some nice stallions suggested here but if you’re looking to breed yourself an Advanced eventer from a TB mare, you should go with a stallion who produces Advanced eventers from TB mares.
