"Unbranded" movie

I just watched this documentary. It’s about some young men who take mustangs on a ride from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. It was really good, with beautiful scenery and great horses. I got sweaty palms in some of the places they rode, like the Grand Canyon (even though I did that years ago, but on mules who’d done it a ton, not on barely broke mustangs!).

It was on Dish pay-per-view, and I highly recommend it.

I have been following this documentary from it’s inception, and am (somewhat) patiently waiting for my chance to see the finished product!

The executive producer is the same lady who did “Buck”, and very high quality production and cinematography. Those guys were recent college grads who took off for months to make this trek, and it was quite the adventure.

I think you’ll love it. Maybe someone you know has Dish and can record it for you. Make a party of it!

Google it-- they’re promoting premieres at many places across the country; might be in a town near yours. I know our local theater had a minimum of 75 tickets sold… still needs a few more before it’s confirmed. I’m hoping to go! A family friend of ours sold those boys the “Luke” mustang (palomino paint). His name was previously Queso, and he was her mount-in-training until her husband contracted ALS and they had to sell the horses :frowning:

I believe the premier at select houses is tonight (at least here in FT Worth)

They did a good job with the movie, at the Fort Worth showing “Luke” and one other of the horses was in attendance…they actually had them on stage after the showing, then a met/greet afterwards.

The group is headed to Amarillo for Saturday showing, then if I remember correctly San Antonio, then Houston and finally Austin next Thursday

I wasn’t aware the riders were Texas A&M grads

My friend just arranged to have this shown at our local AMC theater through Tugg. We saw it last night with all of our closest horse friends (about 200).

I really enjoyed it! The scenery was gorgeous, the story was really interesting to me, and I had many sweaty palm moments. I loved how they interspersed the facts about the BLM and adoption, plus the various sides of the argument, into the story.

two thumbs up! See it in a theater if you can, the scenery is stunning. There is a book that goes into more detail about the experience. When my friend arranged for the showing, Ben Masters sent her an autographed book. I’m next in line to read it.

I just finished watching it (bought a copy on iTunes) and absolutely loved it. I am going to recommend it to all my equestrian (and some non-equestrian) friends and family. Now I am going to order the book to read more about their trip

The book if shipped UPS Postal service may take a while to get to you… daughter ordered the book and it took eight days to come from College Station, Tx. to Ft Worth … they are using some book/printed material rate that is not much cheaper that standard 1st Class.

Can you tell me would it be suitable for kids? There is going to be a viewing not too far from me (it will be in Rockaway, NJ if anyone is interested) if they get enough people.

there are a few, I am mean a few cuss words …but if the kids have been around horses I suspect they have heard those words before.

There is one scene where because of the terrain (steep rocky slope) they are having to lead the horses up… the last one refuses and falls… it is collected and then climbs the path (at this point at the Toronto Canada showing some animal rights people got up) … this horse later wonders away while grazing and is found dead the body is shown not in a grim way but as a respect for its heritage… I believe the voice over said something about how good of horse he was and it was better for him to died on the open range rather than in a containment correl… I believe that was what was said.

Any abuse I saw was delivered by the horses to the riders, a few well placed kicks sent several rolling which brought laughs from the audience (I saw this at the Ft Worth Mustang Challenge and nearly 100% of those in attendance were horse people, many having worked with Mustangs)

Luke, the star Mustang, has taken to the part of Hollywood actor pretty well… he was a center piece for after showing photographs doing so with a seemingly knowledge of what he is doing is helping his buddies still out there. (After the filming of Unbranded at the 2013 Mustang Million contest in Ft. Worth, Luke was solid at auction to the O’Brien family of Tulsa, Oklahoma for $25,000, all proceeds went to the Mustang Heritage Foundation to promote more mustang adoptions… then after a few months the O’Briens gave Luke back to Ben Masters saying Luke belong to Ben)

Granted, I’m a little biased, but I totally loved the movie. I think it did a great service to the mustangs and really showed how awesome they are as riding partners.

They told this story not only as the story of the mustang, but also kind of a human interest/coming of age story, so it’s great for both horse people and non-horse people. The guys are a hoot and they show both the ups and downs of this adventure pretty well.

Some of the scenes really felt like a kick in the gut, but a lot of that is because I have a mustang of my own. Of course, some of them will get everyone, and they got me too, but as a mustang owner, there’s a deeper connection to it all.

Also…Donquita. I think there’s a burro in my future…

Howdy, Coth Ranch amigos… This here movie’s been a topic of lots of conversation among my own bucket gal and her compadres. Guess everybody’s real impressed with how good a good horse is, and such. And also, how purty the open range is, which a ranch horse like me already knows. But I’m real glad to know so many folks like to watch good cowboys and good horses, and who want to know all about my more wild horse-kin.

Best horse regards,
Whiskey

A spoiler alert would have been nice for those that have not seen it yet.

The trailer looks good…

I cannot see where anyone has exposed any great thrilling part of the movie as there really isn’t any one thing about this movie or a pivotal scene other than they keep expressing that Mustangs are great, if you find the correct one and that Mustangs are not for everyone or the faint of heart.

I believe they sorted through about 100 head to select the few they used.

A lot of fore thought went into the pre-production of this movie… but it all started in a bar in College Station

In this reply I mention the spoiler, so skip if the original post with it gets edited:

The part about the horse dying and how they handle it. Spoiler warnings are easy to do. Many people do not like knowing anything like that before watching. For example now while watching it I’ll be waiting for it to happen and it may change how I view the movie. Everyone is different.

well, you will have to guess which time the horses got away and one dies as spoiler alert…they get away more than once

I believe I was responding to a specific question about would the movie be acceptable for a child to watch… actual photos of real deaths bother some people …

In the grand scheme of things, the pony’s death is no more than footnote in the movie… I do have a photo of the horse with his buddies that hangs on my wall

And I don’t think it’s a huge deal, I was just responding since there are different levels of spoilers and all that. You weren’t out to spoil.

But for those reading something like this would have worked:

For parents who are worried if it is okay for children, here are some events that happen in the movie.

Now people know to only read if they want spoilers.

Either way I’m looking forward to it.
