My 2 y/o’s name is “Zuri”. Reg. name is Senszuri Overload.
Unintentionally unusual, but it fit!

I had a boarder who’s horse was named Screamer. Papered name was Screaming Hot Wings.
I was at a horse show and saw a cute little bay but very porky pony with his halter on… name plate read:
Fatty McButterpants
 I asked the owner standing nearby if that really was his name. Yep. They called him Fatty for short.
The horse name that I remember being such a good “fit” – a horse at riding school named “Most Unlikely” – I found out the hard way, when we were schooling over a 2’ outside jump… I pointed him toward it, and just continued as if for sure we would go over it… at the last stride he swerved a hard left, and literally bolted to the other end of a 50 acre field. I was so humiliated! Of course, this occurred on a day that the schools head instructor, BHS Fellow Cherry Hatton-Hall was giving the lesson! But I credit that horse with giving me a good lesson in riding to the jump. My own horse (back home) was such a sure thing over any obstacle that I was at best, a lackadaisical, rider.
Used to be a palomino named Lemon Wedge…of course, Wedgie for short.
Also a Puddin’ Head and a Pickle. Interesting these all have to do with food. Oh, and a LB, short for Little Britches.
I love reading these posts, but this one is my favorite, as I did laugh right out loud:
Mare’s name
Grandchildren’s mini mare name is Phat (fat) Chick. Honest they named her that the day she arrived…so it stuck as her show name.
At home she is called Cupcake…
Some unusual/funny barn names from horses in my life:
Dennis (the Menace), it fit him to a T.
Camel - because someone said when they looked at her head from the ground she looked like a camel.
Elmer (Glue) because, well, he was not the most handsome horse in the barn, but he made up for it in movement, talent and heart.
Sizzlean (like the breakfast meat back in the 80’s), because she could be a tough ride in the show pen due to her attitude. Now that she is retired, we call her Wizzle.
Montel and Fraiser, when my friend was going through a TV naming phase.
Dunkin, because when he was two hours old, he stuck his head in both water buckets in the stall right up to his eyes.
Our current racing colts have barn names of Peanut and Stumpy. They’re half brothers. Peanut had a sister with barn name Miss Peanut. Peanut is the biggest of the three…Ms Peanut died at 2 but was teeny and Stumpy is…well…Stumpy.
“The Mare” (registered name Wycked Victory) is also called- “The Sofa”. But I tell everyone to call her Hazelnut.
The shetland pony is Sunny ka Sunshine Destiny but we most often call her “Pony” or " The Little Mare".
The paint pony is called “Ging” or Ginger.
Another of my mares is called “Fizz-izle” or “Spaz” or “Hot Tamale”. You can deduce why that is
And yet another of the mares which my sister is seriously consider using this as her show name in the next schooling show “Witch with a capital B”. But we call her Gracie-Lou (re: Miss Congeniality on account of the horse’s stellar coordination).
In the past I’ve had Mare-Bear, Vicor, Mel, Joe, JR, Reggie, Grouch, Blue, Handsome, Lucky, Belle, Woody, Jerry, Buddy, Lady, Hope, Poop, and almost had a Ribeye (but they decided to keep racing him )
Edit to add: Gizmo, “the gremlin” or “evil donkey”. Poor guy who was so abused, but he’s living at the donk sanctuary now.
My paint colt’s registered name is Legend From Arkansas so his barn name is Clinton. His brother’s registered name is Little Chubby but we call him Bruno. My daughter picked that one out, I don’t know where she got it.
My horses don’t have very ordinary, predictable barn names (Monster, Sweets, Le’Sorna, Amadeus, Andre.) I don’t care for the typical “horse” names so always try to pick something different.
I trim many that have unusual names also. But I was joking the other day - if I get one more chestnut gelding named Trooper to trim I’m going to cry! I now trim 5 chestnut geldings named Trooper.
I trim some Fjords, Icelandics, and Pasos with unusual names. Some of them, even the barn name is difficult to spell and pronounce.
My pony’s barn name is Dino, short for Caradino, and I’ve never met another! I also think Dino is a very appropriate name for a pony who was adopted into a proper Jersey Italian family!
My bff’s horse is named Picante, which fits his spooky little Arab self perfectly.
I’ve known lots of strange names though… Whataface (Appaloosa), Trash, Miltosh and Ikash (named after the owner’s Turkish girlfriends), Flax, and I rode a great horse in lessons recently named Shady.
How could I have forgotten this one? We had a new boarder that bought a grade trail horse, the horse came with the name of Bandit, the new owner (who spoke with a very heavy French accent) renamed him Prozak. When he sold the horse, the new owners asked what his former name was (as they hated the name Prozak), and because they could not understand him when he told them, they called the horse Bennet.
Chip morphs into Ebay when he opts to be an asshat
I had a palomino project pony that I ended up calling Leo. He came with the name Hawk and it just didn’t fit, the gelding was a bit of a “pretty boy” so I thought it fitting to name him after Leonardo DiCaprio…
Another project pony I had ended up being called “Pudgy” by the barn owner where I had her as a 3 and 4 year old. I think he forgot her actual name so started calling her pudgy and it was rather fitting for her.
My show pony’s name was Rise and Shine because of how early I had to get up to ride her down before the show would start.
Right now I have a mare named Vegas which I think is probably pretty common so am still trying to come up with a more original show name.
Our Buckskin gelding is affectionately called Golden Butthead because he is naughty. He is a perpetual middle school boy.
Our chubby Haflinger gets called Muffin Top or Pound Cake…of course it’s because keeping her figure in check is really difficult!
I have known a Snot, and a Goober, and some names I can’t speak in public.
I have:
Sorrel QH mare Opie - Not because she’s a red mare, but because she looked like a NatGeo picture of an Ethiopian child… Registered as Rohos Precious Honor
Chestnut KWPN Gelding London- Barn name Londy, LondyPoo, or Poodles
Chestnut QH Rohos Classic - Barn Name: RC, Mr Chompers, Red Fury,
Bay QH mare Sonnet - Barn name… Sonnet.
Bay Hann gelding Another Time - Barn name AT, T-time, Tster, and DammitT
Black/bay GRP mare Irish Delight - Barn Name: Deli, Princess Pony, Pony
And not mine but:
Sambuca Extra (Buca. Bucky Bucastan), Arlberg (Bergy), Half-Pint (palomino pony), Dallas, and finally Kiwi (Kiwasabi, Kiwi-Sake, and Kiester)
We got a call once from a potential boarder who kept talking about her horse “Mauler”, a 17.2hh Hanoverian. I kept thinking, do we really need a very large horse around who apparently is a bad actor? We decided to take a chance, and she drove up and unloaded a beautiful, creampuff of a great guy, whose halter plate read “Mahler”. Instantly my vision of a savage turned into one of a beautiful symphony, and he was really a sweetheart.

I thought the same thing about Screamer. What were these people bringing to my barn:eek: Screamer was a 15.2 TB who little kids could ride and then turnaround and do adult jumpers:cool:
Still think it’s funny I had a Screamer in the barn.
