have you read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton? The main character is named Ponyboy and is told by another character to, “Stay gold, Ponyboy”. So I think Ponyboy for a gold pony is adorable.
My paint gelding #1 is Foolofatook a.k.a. Pippin
Paint gelding #2 is A Cowboys Wild Dream (i didn’t name him…i think it’s silly. if we ever show he’s going under “imjustacowboy”) a.k.a. Cowboy
Standardbred mare (unraced PMU foal) Whimsically Challenged a.k.a. whimsey
OTTB mare is Alianza, a.k.a. Angel
and finally
My Anglo Arab is Dublin Waltz a.k.a. Sebastian.
my boarders are:
OTTB gelding “A Certain Celebrity” a.k.a. Casee
Percheron X Morgan is something like Opals Majesty or something rather silly for his size (18 hands) and goes by Pike,
Morgan Mare is “execter’s electra” a.k.a. Mariah
and
Last is a registered QH gelding with the silly name of “Badger’s Sandy Rascal” a.k.a. Stimey.
My friends old mare’s registered name is “Pines Bundle” ??? the eff?? lol, so her name is Easy, as in … easy mare, eeeaasssyyy.
This year at an IHSA show in Utah (USU), one of the reining horses names was “The Gelding”, so we asked why he had that name. Owner says “well, he’s about 13 years old, and no one ever came up with a name for him, and now I can’t think of him as anything other than The Gelding”
One of our mare’s nickname is Mama, I have no idea why that stuck, since she was not a very good mother.
Percy, two called Sir, Too Tall (was an 18+ hand TB), Keeze (pronounced as “keys”), Streit (“straight”), Alpo (awful old broodie), True, Beamer (husband gave her a choice between a $1500 horse or a BMW hoping she’d take the car so she wouldn’t spend all her time at the barn), Preacher, Bones, Jeze (was also her registered name, pronounced like the name Jessie, only with a Z sound) … can’t think of any others off the top of my head.
my favorite, though, is my dad’s horse. his unoffical barn name is F***er because anyone who has spent more than five minutes riding him has called him that. dad even has a nice leather halter with a brass nameplate with that on it.
Tidbit - She was exactly 14.2 hands barefoot. If she’d been a tidbit taller she’d have been a horse. Pony of unknown origin who went on to be in a black beauty movie. (She was the trick merrylegs) SMART pony!!!
Chief - so weird cause he was lowest on the totem pole in every pasture situation. He redeemed himself on the jump course though. Ugly Appaloosa that was 16h+ and could jump anything from almost any angle.
My mare came with the unoriginal and irritating barn name “Classy”, which unfortunately is part of her registered name. She is usually called something starting around the level of “Skanky Ho” and deteriorating from there.
DH’s mare is Irish. So we call her “Clare”. REALLY original, I know.
My boys have what I think are more unusual barn names, that have nothing to do with their registered names or their heritage. One is the big blonde gelding called “Atlas”…and sometimes “Kitty”, since he likes to cover his poop with shavings  The other is my WC ASB hunter, whose barn name, depending on the day, is alternately “Doodad” (which came from wanting to call him “Thingamajig” or “Doohickey” but “Doodad” rolled off the tongue better) and “Puppy” because he’s such a lovey cuddle bug.
And of course there are the mini donks, Chuck and Larry, named for the main characters in the movie “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” and bought the month gay marriage was legalized here in Iowa!
I have a horse named Dawkins.
Yes, named after the football player
I had an OTTB named Secretos Lord that I just couldn’t come up with a barn name. My daughter one day was in the barn and asked me what the dewormer was hanging on his stall basket. He then got the barn name Quest. (hey, it sounds better than Panacur or Zimectrin!)
My homebred is named Testimonial (sire Reputed Testamony). I finally came up with Neo as a barn name. Nothing really goes with Testimonial and I thought naming him “Testy” would be a self fulfilling prophecy. Neo reminded me of Keanu Reeves-can’t remember the name of the movie where he played that character, though.
I had a Spats-chestnut with four matching white socks and a blaze. He was a cool horse. His show name was Mr. Spats-because the addition of Mr. makes it all the much more formal!
I have a TinyPony, obviously, because she was so little that she wasn’t staying long. Just long enough to calm down and become a kids’ pony. Hmmm… <<five years later!>> However, her barn name - TinyPony - is quite appropriate now, since she shows USEA events under her registered name - we are Kate Wooten and “her Tiny Pony”.
I have an average height little horse too, whose name is joePony.
I have an OTTB mare. She’s called Toast. I loff her even though she is really just a lawn ornament (could be so much more if I ever et around to it!).
I used to ride a horse called B.G. Short for Bay Gelding.
I’ve got Fleck… who was originally “flecken” which is German for spot. Now he’s Flecken Awesome.
Also trying to think of names for my new appy baby and I think she may be “Funfetti” and go by Funny.
Roany showed as “Kiss my Grits” back in the day
Lovin’ all these names…
I knew a horse named Oops. Beautiful mare but an surprise baby.
I’ve also known:
Porkchop - fat palomino lesson pony that went to camp in the summer. He would sit in the field like a dog.
Like It - friends bay pony
Warts - pretty mare who at one time had warts on her muzzle
Mr. Nickleby - my mom’s last horse. His JC name was Domino Dan. He was a horse that needed more respect. lol
#7 - it was his hip # from New Holland and it stuck.

I have an OTTB mare. She’s called Toast. [/QUOTE]
Love it!
I have a thing for P’s so all of mine have barn names that start with P. Piper, Petra, Peanut, Penny, and Priya. It’s much easier than trying to remember the registered names of a few of them.
A horse I dearly loved before she passed away at nearly 40 years old had the show name “All the Cookies”. But her barn name was simply “Ears” LOL. And she had the longest ears I’ve ever seen on a horse LOL.
A young welsh stallion that boarded here was registered as “Chilie” but his barn name here was “Pony”. He knew it too and would come running when I called him. Smart as a whip, that boy.
At a dressage barn I used to work for there was a holsteiner mare with a french-sounding name. I asked my boss what to call her around the barn. He said I could call her anything I wanted, but he just called her “Bitch” LOL. (I didn’t go with that though :D)
Then my sister in law had two arab colts and a filly born one year that she adored and doted on ridiculously. The filly was called “Blanker-panker” and the colts were “The Pooka Wooka” and “Pooka Wooka Luca”.
I used to ride a pony named Bonnie. Since he has a gelding we thought that was odd and renamed him Donnie. Turns out the seller had an english accent and what we thought was Bonnie was actually Barney
There’s a horse where I work called MJ. It doesn’t stand for anything, he just has a brand that is an M over a J
My horses are fairly boring Luna born during a lunar eclipse and ottb slick shadow aka jackson. I know two mares named Jazz and Ember and their Moms call them Ellen and Portia which is hilarious. I was at a farm with a horse named My Name which the owner found hilarious and i found dumb. They also had a Willing. Willing brave and strong. My trainer has Cindy Lou Who and Suess. She had a gorgeous pony named Dazzle. Others I really liked. Ready to Rumble aka Rebel. My Little one aka MyLO. Show and tell Aka Tellie. Shootong Star aka Comet and a very expensive fancy German pony More than Normal aka Norman.
The lesson barn I taught at in college had a nice horse named Call Girl…I cringed everytime I heard it, especially from the kids. The other instructor and I tried to use Cee-Gee instead, but the BO and workers kept right on using Call Girl, so it never stuck. It was some part of her registered name, but, I couldn’t believe the BO didn’t have the presence of mind to change it.
Probably shouldn’t post this, but you asked! 3 y.o. race gelding by the name of Sizedoesnotmatter. What does my partner’s husband call him? Little Dick. When he races again this year, we are going to need to be extra careful when cheering him on through the stretch.
