UPDATE #2 - Orphan Foal: Last Video, Last Post.
OK, folks. I’m signing off now. Here is the last video, but have the kleenex ready because it’s so sweet, it could make you cry (it sure made me cry): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlQRHEARcAg.
I definitely welled up on that one. What an amazing story and…man I love COTH

But is Annie going with her step momma?

Yes, I was distressed, too, to discover she would have to leave only a few days after arriving. The farm where she is being bred does not allow foals to accompany the mares (yeah, that was a new development to me, too–when I was around TB breeding farms, another lifetime ago, the foals always went along…but, then again, such “day trips” weren’t as common). At least they will have have 3 days together, though – I just found out the stallion already has two mares booked for Monday, so she won’t leave until the late afternoon…then she’ll be back in a few hours.

oh, sorry that Annie won’t be going, but if step mom is back in a few hours, it should be fine, right? Let’s home everything works like clock work and the
happy story continues!!! They are so beautiful together. Best of luck to all!

At least, the stallion will have a good day!! lol

That is distressing, but I am sure that little Annie will be just fine for those few hours – the new momma mare might not be so happy! It’s like when parents leave an infant for the first time – trust me it is much more stressful on the mother! That video is precious – they are BOTH beautiful! And, with the horrible circumstances that began, it appears that you could not have found a better angel as your nurse mare. Good luck!

Yes, that made me tear up! What a beautiful relationship, lovely filly, and wonderful mare.

I’m sure that will be fine (not that I’m any expert - just hoping!). I’m just so amazed how this came together…again, I just love COTH.

Is she still on gastroguard? I’d keep her on it while the mare is taken away. Any kind of stress… just as a precaution.

It’s actually a fairly common practice here in KY to ship the mares to the sheds without their foals. Someone stays with the foal while the mare is away (or they’ll hang a dummy in the stall - usually a hay stuffed pair of overalls/shirt - ours was named Fred) They settle down fairly quickly.

I am so sorry for your loss!! But that video was incredible!!! Thank you very much for sharing!! Best of luck with Annie!!!

Such wonderful news! I am so happy for Annie, you and the mama mare who needed a baby to love.

What a great outcome for both of them!! And Annie isn’t shy - is she???

Lovely

Wynn: I just have one word to describe all of the: PERFECT!!!

Yes, the mare was from Craiglist (BIG THANK YOU to the person who posted about that!). Her name is something like “Big Red Champ.”
You are very welcome and I am soooo happy it worked out for you. I was on craigslist window shopping and almost had a heart attack when I saw the mare that lost her foal. I thought of you instantly

That is so awesome Wynn! So glad you were able to find the mare and Annie is just a doll!

Glad my info on the igloo cooler helped <although I really do need to fix the file :frowning: >

Not only is it much easier, but it is really important to maintain that nursing/sucking behavior in case a suitable nursemare is found, like in Pwynn’s case.

VERY smart baby to make these switches so fast and easily!

Hoping everything goes well today when Red leaves and hoping she comes back pronto! Best of luck to all involved. It is so touching watching that video.

Ach, all verklempt – sniff sniff…

Hope all goes well once the mare comes back home after breeding

Red blew through every cc of tranquilizer she was given and nearly tore the van apart – got a bit scary. But she came back OK, rattled and hyper-protective of Annie…but OK. I left them outside all night for the first time last night and, looking out there right now, it’s another cute moment: Red is lying down and Annie is standing over HER. (Sorry, no picture: I’m still in pjs and shooting through the window screen won’t work.)

That is ridiculous that they don’t let the foal come along to the breeding farm. Stress hormones don’t make a real pleasant environment for the semen. I have taken foals in to the breeding shed, taken foals to the breeding farm but left them in the trailer while their dam was bred and taken them to the breeding farm and sticking them in a stall while their dam was bred but never been forced to leave them home. Fingers crossed that she is in foal so they don’t have to repeat the process!

I just saw this thread (I’ve been away). You are right, the video was so sweet and did indeed make me cry. Looks as if you have a lovely foal there, and a darling adoptive mom. Best wishes to you all (and condolences on your loss).
