The fate of these horses is the reason we have it in our will that our horses are to be humanely euthed if we can no longer care for them. It gives us peace of mind.
My heart goes out to all horses auctioned into a kill pen. It’s horrible and something I don’t want on my conscience.
Too bad I’m not in a position to offer assistance.
I don’t know the details of where these horses came from, but a quick look at pedigrees indicates that this is a breeder (hoarder?) dispersal. None of these horses raced. They were likely all turned out together, mares with stallions. One of the mares from this group listed, though not in the sale, Spin to Win, has a registered foal by her own son. Talk about some up close inbreeding.
This is a fair assessment of the situation. All of the mares are half sibs or closer to the stallion’s dam. The dam has a foal at foot now by her son. Nightmare Doll is carrying a foal by her sire.
Sounds like the herd stallion, Whotoldyouthat, has a safe spot. I hope this means that breeding has ceased at the ranch where they came from.
I was really hoping I had won the lottery last night, but alas… I will certainly chip in a little – sounds like OP can use some help?
I really appreciate this sentiment–thank you. I’m fine covering Fellow’s costs…if anyone has anything to spare, and would like to help, Epona is working hard to get some of those horses through the sale.
Oh, you’re right, Viney. So the bay unregistered mare could be out of Letheworlddance or her foal Frauline (who is by The Rufus.) The unregistered bay geldings are almost undoubtedly by Whotoldyouthat.
I am an old email buddy of Epona’s and I told her I would send money to help with vaccines, vet and farrier with whatever she can manage to purchase. ML is extremely upset with this, she just had to put an old dog down and is on tenderhooks right now, as she put it, because she has a lot of history with this bloodline and the ownership. She is also elderly and still has a full house of horses in her care already. Her heart bleeds for this and she feels compelled to rescue what she can.
Since this thread did not have enough timing to organize and campaign, in the after thought here if she can manage to bring home a few I know that we can rally to help.
Thank you to everyone who is trying to help these horses…I have fond memories of a VERY nice gelding whose damsire was Transworld; he was stout, chestnut with a lot of white, and had a wonderful personality. He was a reliable earner whose half sister made over a quarter million in NY. He would have been outstanding in the show ring - lovely movement, carriage and attitude.
Please keep the thread updated as much as you can.
Dee
ETA - the gelding I referenced above had a race record of 131-13-20-27, with earnings of over 184K the hard way. That shows the kind of iron horses we`re talking about.
Is there anyway to send money and get it there in time to help save a horse? I am across the country and got out of trying to breed. However my WB mare’s grandmother is a Stage Door Johnny mare and she is the smartest horse I have ever owned so I am prejudiced. Prince John and Hyperion that close up in the pedigree - it just doesn’t get any better.
Let me know how I can help. I have three stalls and three horses so I can’t take another one in but I hate to see these bloodlines get lost for ever.
Susan, I believe Epona is taking $$ via paypal–shoot her a PM for the details. Thank you so much for helping.
Sheeps are in the ring right now. Then we have baby cows, goaties and pigs. Then ponies.
Anyone who wants to view can do it here: http://www.cattleusa.com/index.php?showLive=1 You just have to register.
Horses are sold by CWT, which is so much $$ per 100 pounds. A bid of $15 on a 1000 lb horse = $150. It’s a little confusing if you’re not used to it.
I sent her a PM. ( I think I did it right.) Thanks!
Update?
I don’t think horses are up yet. Can anyone log in to the site and see what species is in the ring? I am heading home and it does not work on my phone.
Sent a pm. My old retired thoroughbred, who is the smartest and most athletic horse I’ve met, is from this Prince John line. I haven’t seen these names in pedigrees, especially up close, in a long time.
Regardless of their breeding, I hope the best for them. And thank you Epona and Simkie!
We’re on pigs. Horses go through after pigs. Word on the street is horses will go around 7 pm mst.
9 to kill:
Two bay geldings
One bay mare
Unregistered with star
Unregistered with blaze and LH sock
Unregistered with blaze and LH RH
Unregistered with big star and no leg white baby colt
Unregistered with blaze baby
Winning Spin
Rest went to private buyers I think.
I’ll get up a full report once I take care of my ponies.

83 is kill buyer. They started announcing butt tags about halfway through and were not great about it, so I don’t have them all. Announced that there was one set of papers where they couldn’t figure out who the belongs to…that would be Whatifyouwereme, or perhaps the sellers sent up the wrong set of papers or were confused about what horse it was.
I’m speculating that this was a situation where a reputable breeder got old and was no longer able to keep up. Probably loved their horses and just hung on to them. Then either became too ill to stay at home or died. If still alive, probably a bit senile and very difficult. Thus this situation.
The other alternative would be a nasty divorce with all that implies.
Life gets all of us eventually.
Without getting into details they are alive and together and aging. And pretty obviously overwhelmed. Best not to say any more.
First off, we waited all day and part of the evening before they sold horses. Second there were a foal nursing transrama and nightmare Doll. We waited for those foals to show up and they never did. Turns out that they were sold out the back door to a veterinarian for a research project because he needed unvaccinated babies. It took us all afternoon to convince them that they should even make the effort to find the mares that went with the papers. They tried to convince my friend that there was no description even on the papers. They finally I think began to realize they were starting to look like fools after I spoke with two brand inspectors and the veterinarian. It was when the vet went out to look for them that they discovered the mare, whatifyouwereme wasn’t there. Now was she stolen, or was it a paperwork problem but there were only three registered mares found plus the stud colt. The buyer for the colt was an h/j acquaintance of mine and I persuaded to take a chance on him, explained the big heart thing on his pedigree etc. Got the vet to reassure him that the wound would heal. Nightmare doll was bought by another hunter jumper trainer with the help of a friend who spent the day studying the group. When I pick up Transrama ,who is skin and bones by the way, in the morning, i will try to buy some more of these guys from the killer buyer. He has a lot where he sells them. I was told that the policy is flat 400 profit for the adults and $50.00 for the babies. I think getting Winning Spin with her papers will be tough. I also would point out that at least on my papers for Transrama, they didn’t sign the transfer on the back. So I have to take those back too. A lot of irregularities to say the least. I am too tired to go into it further tonight, but will update you when I know more and many thanks for all the offers of help.
I wished I could help $ wise, but I have huge vet bills of my own with my horses that are hanging over my head. Thank you Epona and Simki for all your efforts with these horses. I hope more are able to be rescued. What a mess.
thank you so much for the update. I may be able to send a dribble after I pay my bills tomorrow
I also will try and send something this weekend. You two are angels to have done what you’ve done. Perhaps a cross post on Off Course could raise some more money to save more.
I will also gladly send a dribble after pay day next week. I really appreciate all of the efforts!
Thank you so much for being there, and for the update.
If they are JC papers, you don’t need a signed transfer on the papers the way you do with other breeds…your bill of sale ought to be enough unless I am mistaken
Thank you, again.
